About the Author
Robert Fourer received his Ph.D. in operations research from Stanford University in 1980 and is an active researcher in mathematical programming and modeling language design. He joined the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management Sciences at Northwestern University in 1979 and served as chair of the department from 1989 to 1995.

David M. Gay received his Ph.D. in computer science from Cornell University in 1975, and was in the Computing Science Research Center at Bell Laboratories from 1981 to 2001. He is now CEO of AMPL Optimization LLC. His research interests include numerical analysis, optimization, and scientific computing.

Brian Kernighan received his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Princeton University in 1969. He was in the Computing Science Research Center at Bell Laboratories from 1969 to 2000 and now teaches in the Computer Science department at Princeton. He is the co-author of several computer science books, including THE C PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE and THE UNIX PROGRAMMING ENVIRONMENT.

A Great Companion for Great Software

Most software "companions" (more than a manual...not quite a book) really do not do justice to the software. Quite the contrary for the AMPL guide. AMPL (the language) is a *very* powerful and *very* easy to use Optimization package. It interfaces with most of the major solvers. Users program in AMPL which is more or less pseudocode and then solve LP, nonlinear, combinatorial, integer, etc. programs. Unlike most software packages, it is both robust and easy to use. Likewise with the companion/book. There are many great, easy to follow examples, and it clearly explains the intrecacies of the language. A must use software and most own book for anyone doing any optimization work.

If you're using or learning how to use AMPL, fret no more. This is the only book AMPL users should have. Its comprehensive, and gives a lot of good examples. Ideal for both beginner and advance AMPL programmers. You end up using the index in the back for reference after you've become more familiar with AMPL. There's isnt another AMPL book out there. This is THE ONE.

I have to say that this book is a powerful tool to learn basic optimization/programming + AMPL!
This is the only book AMPL users should have. It is comprehensive, user-friendly and gives a lot of good examples. Ideal for both beginners and advance AMPL programmers. Also suitable for self-directed learning.

About the Author
Dr. Braja Das is Dean Emeritus of the College of Engineering and Computer Science at California State University, Sacramento. He received his M.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Iowa and his Ph.D. in the area of Geotechnical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin. He is the author of a number of geotechnical engineering texts and reference books and has authored more than 250 technical papers in the area of geotechnical engineering. His primary areas of research include shallow foundations, earth anchors, and geosynthetics. He is a Fellow and Life Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Life Member of the American Society for Engineering Education, and an Emeritus Member of the Chemical and Mechanical Stabilization Committee of the Transportation Research Board of the National Research Council (Washington D.C.). Dr. Das has received numerous awards for teaching excellence, including the AMOCO Foundation Award, the AT&T Award for Teaching Excellence from the American Society for Engineering Education, the Ralph Teetor Award from the Society of Automotive Engineers, and the Distinguished Achievement Award for Teaching Excellence from the University of Texas at El Paso.

Lacks explanation

This book appears to be useful, but in reality, it isn't. The formulas are given without stating their inherent assumptions and limitations. Somewhere in the book the author states: "for an overconsolidated clay, cohesion is greater than zero; for a normally consolidated clay, it is zero." No further explanation.

This is a "cookbook" type of text, perfectly suited for today's mediocrity infested mentality: grind thru a formula and produce some numbers, fast. To that end, it's a great book. My sincere recommendation to the author: double the size of the book, and turn it into an insightful, meaningful, useful book.

Resourceful and Relevant for professional practice

The content of the book is extremely useful for civil and foundation engineers involved in the design and construction of foundation structures. The construction problems discussed in the examples are very relevant and helpful to the design engineers. The illustrations given in this book are fairly easy to understand which enable me to relate them to the similar geotechnical problems faced in the construction industry in my country.I may recommend the book to be one of the referenced text book for my masters degree student.
I sincerely feel that this is a very good book as far as foundation design and construction practice are concern.

About the Author
Dr. Chen is an Associate Professor at Northeastern Illinois University. She teaches group counseling, individual counseling, grief counseling, and stress management. She has received many awards, the most recent being the Faculty Excellence Award from Northeastern Illinois University for the third time. She has co-authored a book on Individual Counseling as well as many published journal articles.

Dr. Rybak is an Associate Professor at Bradley University and is a specialist in group work. He teaches group counseling, counseling diverse populations, practicum and internship in counseling, theories and techniques of counseling, and pre-practicum in counseling. He has served as the Director of the ELH Counseling Clinic, and was the President of the Illinois Association for Specialists in Group Work. He has received awards for innovative teaching and integrated learning, a research award, and a Fulbright scholarship.

A Valuable Reading Experience

As a high school counselor who has led many groups, both adolescent and adult, I am constantly searching for literature to better help me serve the group process. I consider myself fairly well-read in the areas of counseling, group leadership, and the group process. With that said, I am thoroughly impressed with this book by Chen and Rybak. Thus far, it is the most clearly written and most valuable book I have read on this subject. I find myself continually revisiting chapters over and over as I try to implement the skills and ideas outlined in this book. I believe that this book is definitely a must have for anyone interested in the group counseling process.
I like the book's many strengths (clear examples, helpful exercises, accessible and fluid language), but if I have to single out its greatest strength, then it would be its roadmap approach to the group process. As I read the book, I find myself challenged to examine my own ideas and beliefs as they relate to the field. I have to ask myself what my basic assumptions are about the interpersonal process. Starting from the beginning chapters, this book helps me establish a solid foundation from where I start my leadership journey.
Part Two (Basic Leadership Skills) of this book will be especially helpful for the beginning, less experienced group leaders. It takes the reader through the stepwise approach of starting a group from scratch, leading the first session, establishing a session's pace and feel, working on members' agendas, and working with tension and conflict. Chapter 6 "Working on Agendas" especially provides the readers with a powerful roadmap to follow. With its accessible language, a young counselor does not feel intimidated by the process, but instead, empowered.
Part Three (Advanced Leadership Skills) adds the flesh and muscle to the skeleton. This part can be extremely beneficial for the counseling students, although it really outlines the skills of a veteran group therapist. I love the way Chen and Rybak illustrate how counseling is more than just a series of skills and theories, but a very precise art that takes patience, touch, balance, and know-how. The advanced skills gives the readers something to strive for, while at the same time, further providing the veterans with challenges and approaches that keep the art fresh. Topics that I take special note include: Taking Risks in Communication, Stirring the Pot, and the Hot-Seat Method. Many excellent models for these advanced methods are provided.
I appreciate the authors' emphasis on the importance of reflective journal writing by the members and narrative session notes by the leaders. Throughout the text, Chen and Rybak offer excellent writing samples for both the group members and for the group leader. I like the way the authors close the circle by asking the reader to search inside for his own therapeutic voices and by challenging the reader to continue to grow and to live by the creative edge.
What I take most from the book, even more than the powerful skills and approaches offered, is the compassion, respect, and enthusiasm that the authors show for their subjects. They truly believe in the art of group counseling and the art of leading a successful group. They believe in the power of group. That passion permeates each page and washes over the reader. This book, in many ways, transcends the counseling field and speaks of truths that can be applied to all fields. I gained so much from this book and I will continue to use it as I continue to grow as a counselor, and more importantly, as a person. I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in the helping profession, especially students, and to anyone who wants to better his or her leadership and communication skills.

A book that is a personal mentor to me

I have read other books on the subject of group counseling and therapy and have found that most have one or two positive attributes. However, I find that "Group Leadership Skills" by Chen and Rybak has so many unique qualities (such as personable writing style, effective practice exercises, insightful leadership response samples, bountiful techniques of group counseling, and the emphasis on the development of the self as the instrument in group counseling, etc.) that I really take to heart.
When I read other books, the information felt distant to me. However, when I was reading Chen and Rybak, I felt that I was experiencing what actually goes on in real group sessions. Through the numerous case examples and reflection excerpts, I can see the problems, challenges, and breakthroughs that members and leaders might experience in the forming, storming, norming, and working stages. They truthfully and thoughtfully reflect the group dynamics and interpersonal processes. Now, I can fully appreciate the powerful effect that group interaction can have on individuals.
The way the book is written makes me feel confident that I can apply the knowledge and skills in my practice with all types of groups be it substance abuse groups, adolescent groups, elderly groups, ACOA groups, or groups of any other purpose. The book is written in the sequence of how a group progresses in its full life course and addresses all sorts of interpersonal dynamics even including those not easily recognized by the untrained eye. Therefore, it is quite adaptable to a wide range of group work.
Among the advanced leadership skills, I find the seven principles of constructive confrontation to be a guide or a blueprint in taking effective risks in communication not only in my professional life, but also in my personal life. It is a shame that I did not have the opportunity to learn these important skills earlier in my life, but I am grateful to have discovered them now in this book.
To those faint-hearted individuals, the hot-seat method and the method of stirring-the-pot in the working stage might appear a bit intimidating, but to me I find them to be extremely powerful interventions. I witnessed the hot-seat method and the method of stirring-the-pot to have the ability to evoke more intimate self-disclosure and in-depth interpersonal discovery, which are rare occurrences in our daily lives. Therefore, I consider these methods in this book to be gems in the world of counseling.
I want to say again how much I appreciate the sample leader responses provided throughout the book. What is unique about them is that these sample leader responses use compassionate and sincere language. When I read these samples, I feel like I can see myself using them in my practice. They are not the typical textbook jargon, but rather they resonate an empathic nature which speaks more from the heart than the head.
I was happy to find that multicultural sensitivity is placed in the context of conflict resolution. In our society, we rarely admit that diversity can create tension in a very subtle way that is beyond our language to explain, creating an atmosphere of discomfort and potential for misinterpretation. Chen and Rybak offer a conflict resolution method that brings about healing and resolution directly to the parties involved and insight to other members.
I feel this book is very consoling because it speaks to new leaders like myself. It helps us realize that we will face challenges and setbacks, but it also offers us hope that if we continue to practice, experiment, and trust our creative force within ourselves, we may master the art of group leadership one day.
I feel that this book acts as a personal mentor for me. Of all the textbooks I have read throughout my graduate study, no other book has had such a striking impact on me. I can see myself continuously consulting and reviewing the book when leading a group because the descriptions and examples are so realistic, focused, and concise. I highly recommend this book!

About the Author
Robert J. Schilling is Professor Emeritus of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Clarkson University. Dr. Schilling's teaching interests include digital signal processing, control systems, robotics, nonlinear systems, computer graphics, and C++ and MATLAB programming. His research interests encompass adaptive signal processing, nonlinear system identification, active noise control, and control of robotic manipulators.

Bio: Sandra L. Harris is Associate Professor Emeritus of Chemical Engineering at Clarkson University. Dr. Harris's teaching interests include process control, thermodynamics, and biochemical engineering. Her research interests center around periodic processing, control of systems having varying dead times, and the generation of input signals for efficient process identification.

Good course material but mediocre book; alternate recommendation

I took a course numerical methods in Mechanical Engineering which covered much of the same material. The class text was "Applied Numerical Methods for Engineers" Using MATLAB and C, by Robert J. Schilling and Sandra L. Harris.

I found the Schilling book very tedious. Also the MATLAB code included with teh book was really awful. Some of the codes contained mistakes so that they would produce the wrong answers. Other codes contained mistakes that would generate errors when you tried to run the programs. Other codes from the Schilling text were just ported over from C; the structure was inefficient and hard to follow- not well suited for MATLAB.

The Schilling book didn't encourage the reader to use many MATLAB functions that were built-in. The text tried to explain everything the hard way and was overall a very mediocre book- All the students and Professor in teh class agreed that Schilling's was a very mediocre book. I found it very confusing.

So I finally bought this one [Numerical Methods in Engineering with Matlab, Kiusalaas] on the recommendation of another student. It helped tremendously so I could do the final project and salvage a 'B' from the course. The codes are simpler to follow and more appropriate to MATLAB. It contains a much better explanation of the eigenvalue problems and systems of linear algebraic equations.

It's more practical if you want ot learn to do instead of [Schilling] putzing around getting stuck in minutiae. Or if you might prefer to do something first and then go back for a try at understanding the minutiae later.

I only wish I had bought this book sooner. The Schilling text ["Applied Numerical Methods for Engineers" Using MATLAB and C, by Robert J. Schilling and Sandra L. Harris] sucked. This book [Numerical Methods in Engineering with Matlab, Kiusalaas] was much better for MATLAB users.

About the Author
Kathy Yoshiwara was born in Derby in the UK and grew up in Richmond, Virginia. She attended Michigan State University, where she studied Greek and mathematics. She did graduate work at UCLA and earned an MA in mathematics in 1977. She left UCLA in 1979 to join the faculty at Pierce College, where she has been teaching ever since, except for the 1988-1999 academic year, when she taught at Barnsley College in Yorkshire (northern England) on a Fulbright teaching exchange. She is the author or co-author of three mathematics textbooks and is a member of the Calculus Consortium for Higher Education, where she is part of the writing team for their Precalculus text. She is a member of the MAA (Mathematical Association of America) and currently serves on the Committee for Curriculum Renewal and the First Two Years (CRAFTY). In 1996 she received the Award for Distinguished College or University Teaching of Mathematics from the Southern California Section of the MAA. She is married to Bruce Yoshiwara and benefits from his expertise in all things mathematical.

Bruce Yoshiwara has taught full-time at L.A. Pierce College since 1989 (except for the 1998-1999 academic year, when he and his wife Katherine Yoshiwara both had Fulbright Teacher Exchange positions at Barnsley College, England). He is co-author (Katherine is the principal author) of three algebra and pre-algebra textbooks. He serves on the Mathematical Association of American (MAA) Committee on Computers in Mathematics Education and is a consultant for Project NExT (New Experiences in Teaching). Bruce is editor of the Pierce Math Department newsletter and maintains the department web page.

The best of its kind

I have been a professional arranger/orchestrator for nearly fifty years. My copy of the first edition of this book, which I obtained in 1982, is well worn from constant use because it is the best source of accurate information about the widest variety of instruments.

Alfred Blatter understood what an orchestrator wants and needs to know about the capabilities and limitations of the instrumental forces. For students, this book provides reliable data on which they can build a useful and dependable knowledge base. For experienced writers, it is a superb source of reminders as well as information about some instruments for which one may not have previously encountered.

The book's fingering charts have often helped me make decisions about how a tricky passage could be made more comfortable for the players. Information about accessible ranges for student performers vs. those of professionals has also been of immense value to me.

In short, this book is an excellent reference work.

This is an excellent resource book for any music student, anyone interested in symphonic or band music, and any composer. In short: If you love music, this book will be an extrememly useful addition to your bookshelf.

An excellent book - for instrumentation

Instrumentation and Orchestration should be titled just "Instrumentation."
The book goes in depth on practically every instrument available, explaining each instrument's specal features. It demonstrates how to notate a "smack tone" for a double-reed, or a "mouthpiece pop" for brass. It does in depth on brass mute effects and multiphonics, it shows picture after picture of instrument families (in the case of the clarinets, it dipicts the A-flat soprano clarient to the B-flat contrabass clarinet, and everything in between, including the basset horn in F).
Instrumentation and Orchestration highlights almost every percussion instrument seen in modern ensembles,and includes an apendix with fingering charts for every instrument discused earlier in the book. It even has a section on the voice and choral arrangements.
But it contains only 5 short chapters on orchistration, somthing stressed in the title of the book. If somone is looking for a book on orchistration, this would not be the book to buy. It may be extreemely helpful in demonstrating every instrument's unique charactaristics and how to notate them, but I would caution anyone buying this book purely for orchestration.

About the Author
G. Michael Schneider is Professor Emeritus of Mathematics and Computer Science at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota. He also served as a Visiting Professor of Computer Science at Columbia University in New York. His professional interests include parallel processing, computer networks, programming methodology, and computer science education. He has written many successful textbooks on software development, data structures, computer organization, and a breadth-first overview of computer science. Dr. Schneider was a member of the committee that authored the ACM/IEEE Computing Curriculum 2001. He has received Fulbright Grants to teach computer science and applied mathematics in Mauritius, Malaysia, Nepal, and Mongolia. He received his B.S. from Michigan University and his M.Sc. and Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Judith Gersting is a Professor Emeritus of Computer Science at the University of Hawaii at Hilo and at Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis, where she now teaches part-time. An experienced educator and respected professional, Dr. Gersting has written a number of leading college textbooks. Her areas of specialization include theoretical computer science and computer science education. She earned her B.S. from Stetson University and her M.A. and Ph.D. in mathematics from Arizona State University.
