About the Author
Michael R. Middleton is a Professor of Decision Sciences at the School of Business and Management, University of San Francisco, where he has taught since 1977. He is a member of the Decision Sciences Institute, the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences, and the American Statistical Association. He has published three books with Duxbury, delivered a variety of seminars and workshops in decision science, and authored two decision science software programs.

Good supplementary text for introductory statistics course

This book allows the reader to access the data analysis power of Microsoft Excel 97. It covers all of the functions located in the Data Analysis add-in for Excel (Tools Menu). Examples are explicit, step-by-step, and business related. Little previous knowledge of Excel required- there are 2 chapters dealing with the basics of using the program. This is not a stand-alone text, however, and should accompany a comprehensive introductory statistics text for those with no previous statistics experience.

How to Master Data Analysis with Excel

Doing statistical analysis with Excel can be cumbersome if you don't have a good reference handy. This book has it all: Getting started with Excel, working with data / charts, describing your data, probability distributions, statistical inference, regression and correlation, multiple regression, analysis of variance, time series, and quality control. Many concept tutorials which can be done with the disk illustrate the principles explained in the book.

I got the book several years ago with a 3 1/2 floppy disk. Its a goo d book on how to use formulas and handle data with excel, very practical and concise. Should be updated.

About the Author
Susanna S. Epp received her Ph.D. in 1968 from the University of Chicago, taught briefly at Boston University and the University of Illinois at Chicago, and is currently Vincent DePaul Professor of Mathematical Sciences at DePaul University. After initial research in commutative algebra, she became interested in cognitive issues associated with teaching analytical thinking and proof and has published a number of articles and given many talks related to this topic. She has also spoken widely on discrete mathematics and has organized sessions at national meetings on discrete mathematics instruction. In addition to Discrete Mathematics with Applications and Discrete Mathematics: An Introduction to Mathematical Reasoning, she is co-author of Precalculus and Discrete Mathematics, which was developed as part of the University of Chicago School Mathematics Project. Epp co-organized an international symposium on teaching logical reasoning, sponsored by the Institute for Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science (DIMACS), and she was an associate editor of Mathematics Magazine from 1991 to 2001. Long active in the Mathematical Association of America (MAA), she is a co-author of the curricular guidelines for undergraduate mathematics programs: CUPM Curriculum Guide 2004.

Very useful but oddly limited

Pros: The book has condensed summaries of material from the textbook, chapter reviews that are unavailable in the textbook, and the answers for selected problems. Solutions are shown with each step worked out in order.

Cons: The answers in this book are only for the problems that are (a) multiples of three, and (b) not already published in the back of the textbook. For example: in chapter four, section 2, the multiple-of-three rule means that the answers for problems 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, etc. should be in the guide. However, the answers for problems 3, 6, 21, 24, and 27 are printed in the back of the textbook. This means that for the first 30 problems, the guide only has answers for problems 9, 12, 15, 18, and 30. The constant flipping back and forth gets annoying fast (for me). Also, the rules mean that you never know exactly which answers are in the guide (since the textbook publishes answers in the back at random).

I was hoping for an in depth answer solution set for at least all the odd problems. It is not like that, it is only selected problems that have answers. Basically I shouldnt have bought this book.

Fairly useless

This book is very small. When you open it, you won't be happy with the amount of knowledge within. Instead of feeling relieved that you've bought a solution manual that can help you solve problems, you will instead wish you had your money back. Very few questions are covered. The questions that are answered in this book aren't answered very well. Rosen's 'Discrete Mathematics and Its Applications' is not only a better textbook, but the answers contained within its solutions manual are actually useful. If you are using this book for self-study, do yourself a favor and pick up the Rosen book instead.

About the Author
Michael Cummings is the author and coauthor of a number of widely used college textbooks, including BIOLOGY: SCIENCE AND LIFE; CONCEPTS OF GENETICS; GENETICS: A MOLECULAR PERSPECTIVE; ESSENTIALS OF GENETICS; HUMAN HEREDITY; and HUMAN GENETICS AND SOCIETY. He has also written articles on aspects of genetics for the McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science and Technology and has published a newsletter on advances in human genetics for instructors and students. He received his Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from Northwestern University. His doctoral work, conducted in the laboratory of Dr. R.C. King, centered on ovarian development in Drosophila melanogaster. After a year on the faculty at Northwestern, he moved to the University of Illinois at Chicago, where for many years he held teaching and research positions. In 2003, he joined the faculty in the Department of Biology at the Illinois Institute of Technology, and currently holds the title of Research Professor. His current research interests involve the organization of DNA sequences in the short-arm and centromere region of human chromosome 21. He is engaged in a collaborative effort to construct a physical map of this region of chromosome 21 for the purpose of exploring molecular mechanisms of chromosome interactions. At the undergraduate level, he has focused on teaching genetics, human genetics for non-majors, and general biology to majors and non-majors. He has received awards given by the university faculty for outstanding teaching, has twice been voted by graduating seniors as the best teacher in their years on campus, and has received several teaching awards from student organizations.

An accurate and concise look into Human Genetics.

This is a wonderful book for a college level exploration of Human Genetics. The chapters introduce every topic well, and in such a way that science majors will remain interested while non science majors aren't left behind. It is a great book to begin to explore the wonders of Human Genetics.

This book effectively conveys interesting, detailed material without confusing the reader. It is not the typical staugy textbook that we college students are so use to as this book made me want to read it, it was so enjoyable. I recommend it to all college students or anyone interested in genetics that would like to understand our genetic principles.

Great book for introduction genetics!

This textbook is an excellent tool for genetics classes or personal enrichment. The book begins with an understandable platform of basic biology so everything that follows makes sense. I loved and love (I still have it) how this book combines simple language to explain terminology and interesting phenomena in genetics and heredity! The colorful illustrations in the book are clear, well labeled and easy to use. I recommend this book.

Target audience is not accurate

Not my sort of book, things were not explained and not extremely clear. Not the most interesting book either. I am not a music teacher but I am a general education teacher and the book seems to be more targeted at people with a strong music education background. The book is not for people hoping for a few pointers to use in their classroom from time to time.

About the Author
The late James Stewart received his M.S. from Stanford University and his Ph.D. from the University of Toronto. He did research at the University of London and was influenced by the famous mathematician George Polya at Stanford University. Stewart was most recently Professor of Mathematics at McMaster University, and his research field was harmonic analysis. Stewart was the author of a best-selling calculus textbook series published by Cengage Learning, including CALCULUS, CALCULUS: EARLY TRANSCENDENTALS, and CALCULUS: CONCEPTS AND CONTEXTS, as well as a series of precalculus texts.

About the Author
Julia Wood joined the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill when she was 24. During her 37 years on the faculty, she taught classes and conducted research on personal relationships and on gender, communication, and culture. She was named the Lineberger Distinguished Professor of Humanities and the Caroline H. and Thomas S. Royster Distinguished Professor of Graduate Education. She has published 25 books and 100 articles and book chapters. In addition, she has presented more than 100 papers at professional conferences and campuses around the United States. She has received 14 awards honoring her teaching and 16 awards recognizing her scholarship. She received her B.A. from North Carolina State University, her M.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and her Ph.D. from The Pennsylvania State University.

great history lessons

this book was assigned to a class i had in college 3 years ago. the class was Racial and Ethnic Groups which was a Sociology class. It gives excellent, well-written essays on various racial/ethnic groups. The book is truly a must have. This book unlike others gives an account of many groups in the U.S.

Great quality!

I was very happy with the overall experience I had with this text book. I received the book on time for my class and it was in perfect condition. I recommend that you save the original packaging that it comes in if you are planning on returning the book (if you rent the book instead of purchasing as I did). The return process is also very simple and easy to do. I would for sure recommend this product to anybody in need of the book!

i received the book, The item was described as having no rips or tears, however it had a few tears on the bottom. the item also said minor highlights, however at least half the book is highlighted. other than that i had no problems
