About the Author
Lyman Ott earned his Bachelor's degree in Mathematics and Education and Master's degree in Mathematics from Bucknell University, and Ph.D in Statistics from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute. After two years working in statistics in the pharmaceutical industry, Dr. Ott became assistant professor in the Statistic Department at the University of Florida in 1968 and was named associate professor in 1972. He joined Merrell-National laboratories in 1975 as head of the Biostatistics Department and then head of the company's Research Data Center. He later became director of Biomedical Information Systems, Vice President of Global Systems and Quality Improvement in Research and Development, and Senior Vice President Business Process Improvement and Biometrics. He retired from the pharmaceutical industry in 1998, and now serves as consultant and Board of Advisors member for Abundance Technologies, Inc. Dr. Ott has published extensively in scientific journals and authored or co-authored seven college textbooks including Basic Statistical Ideas for Managers, Statistics: A Tool for the Social Sciences and An Introduction to Statistical Methods and Data Analysis. He has been a member of the Industrial Research Institute, the Drug Information Association and the Biometrics Society. In addition, he is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association and received the Biostatistics Career Achievement Award from the Pharmaceutical research and Manufacturers of America in 1998. He was also an All-American soccer player in college and is a member of the Bucknell University Athletic Hall of Fame.
Michael Longnecker currently serves as Professor and Associate Department Head at Texas A&M University. He received his B.S. at Michigan Technological University, his first M.S. at Western Michigan University, his second M.S. at Florida State University, and his Ph.D. at Florida State University. He is interested in Nonparametrics, Statistical Process Control, and Statistical Consulting.

very good book, but typos are annoying

the book is very good on application, no proofs, which is fine since the book doesn't try to be all things, BUT i am a bit disappointed at the number of typos for a book in its 5th ed. i'm just finishing the 4th chapter (skipping ch 1 & 2, so basically i've only read 2 chapters so far) for a class and have found the number of typos in the exercises to be quite annoying (especially for a text in its 5th edition!).
the text exercises make heavy use of prior exercise such as 4.xxx says see the prior exercises and that exercise says see another exercise ... is tolerable, but when in the course of chaining exercises one exercise references an exercise in error you start scratching your head and quickly become annoyed.
also, the students solution manual, which has been very helpful, is sometimes provides the different graph than requested in the text. eg. the text ask you to create a histogram and the solutions manual uses a normal probability graph. this isn't too big a deal, but it leaves you with the impression that changes were made to say the text exercises, but not updated in the solutions manual.
again, a good book, especially for those with minimal math background, but for the cost of the text and being in its 5th ed, the number of typos is a bit annoying.

*Excellent* stats book for behavioral researchers

We used this as our primary textbook in a graduate psychology / consumer behavior research methods / data analyis class, and I found it to be an invaluable aid in statistical analysis. From simple measures such as z-scores, t-tests & f-tests, and chi-squares, to more in depth methods such as GLM, ANOVA, and regression, this book is clear and concise. While it can be slightly cursory at times as to the theoretical underpinnings underneath the data analysis methods being used, it is a very helpful book in understanding how to actually make the methods work, and more importantly, knowing which method to apply in which situation.
Untill Prof. Lattin releases his statistical analysis book for behavioral students, Ott's book is the #1 stat resource on my bookshelf.

this book is amazing good. although lack of proofs, the application side of the book is immense. Toones of good real life examples and things are explained in a very clear and simple way. Very easy to understand and in great details.
Must buy if you really interested in the application side of statistical methods which everyone should.
