About the Author
Marianne Schneider Corey is a licensed marriage and family therapist in California and is a National Certified Counselor. She received her master's degree in marriage, family, and child counseling from Chapman College. She is a Fellow of the Association for Specialists in Group Work and was the recipient of this organization's Eminent Career Award in 2001. She received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Mental Health Counselors Association in 2011. She also holds memberships in the American Counseling Association, the Association for Specialists in Group Work, the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, the Association for Multicultural Counseling and Development, and the American Mental Health Counselors Association. She is the co-author of several counseling textbooks, and has made educational DVD programs on various aspects of counseling practice. Marianne has been involved in leading groups for different populations, providing training and supervision workshops in group process, facilitating self-exploration groups for graduate students in counseling, and co-facilitating training groups for group counselors and weeklong residential workshops in personal growth. With her husband, Jerry Corey, she has given many presentations at professional conferences and has conducted training workshops, continuing education seminars, and personal growth groups in the United States, Germany, Ireland, Belgium, Mexico, Hong Kong, China, and Korea.

Gerald Corey is Professor Emeritus of Human Services at California State University at Fullerton; a Diplomate in Counseling Psychology, American Board of Professional Psychology; a licensed psychologist; a National Certified Counselor; a Fellow of the American Psychological Association (Counseling Psychology); a Fellow of the American Counseling Association; and a Fellow of the Association for Specialists in Group Work. Dr. Corey taught undergraduate and graduate courses in group counseling, as well as courses in experiential groups, the theory and practice of counseling, and ethics in counseling. He is the author or co-author of 15 counseling textbooks currently in print and numerous journal articles. Along with his wife, Marianne Schneider Corey, Dr. Corey has conducted group counseling training workshops for mental health professionals at many universities in the United States, Canada, Mexico, China, Hong Kong, Korea, Germany, Belgium, Scotland, England, and Ireland. The two received the Association for Specialists in Group Work's Eminent Career Award in 2001. Dr. Corey earned his doctorate in counseling from the University of Southern California.

Excellent Resource

This book was the text my instructor assigned in an interpersonal communication class I took a few years ago. It is very readable, as are all books by the Coreys. It covers a wide range of topics and it uses case examples to illustrate the points. It isn't a counselling book in terms of having alot of exercises on questioning or empathy. It does discuss counselling skills, but it is more concerned with the worker's personal development, in terms of ethics, self-awareness, self-care, etc. The suggested activities at the end of the chapter really help the learning process. My only criticism of the book is that a few of the chapters are a tad long.

This text is a keepsake. I bought it for a class but it assisted in life and in my vocation of ministry. Anyone going into counseling should consider adding this text to his/her collection.

This book takes you right from the beginning of your helping career through each step answering just the kind of questions we each would ask. This was a great guide book that was very professional yet down to earth also. Anyone who wants to be successful in their helping profession should read this book. It is one text book I will be keeping!

About the Author
Reed Wicander is a geology professor at Central Michigan University, where he teaches Physical Geology, Historical Geology, Prehistoric Life, and Invertebrate Paleontology and was previously chair of the department. He obtained his B.A. at San Diego State University and his Ph.D. at UCLA. His main research interests involve various aspects of Paleozoic palynology, specifically the study of acritarchs, on which he has published numerous papers. He is a past president of the American Association of Stratigraphic Palynologists and currently a councilor of the International Federation of Palynological Societies and chair of the Acritarch Subcommission of the Commission Internationale de Microflore du Paleozoique. He has coauthored several geology textbooks with James S. Monroe.

James S. Monroe is Professor Emeritus of Geology at Central Michigan University, where he taught Physical Geology, Historical Geology, Prehistoric Life, and Stratigraphy and Sedimentology beginning in 1975 and served as chair of the Geology department. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Montana. He has coauthored several textbooks with Reed Wicander and has interests in Cenozoic geology and geologic education. Monroe now lives in Chico, California, where he remains active in geology by teaching courses to a large group of retirees.

About the Author
Dennis G. Zill is professor of mathematics at Loyola Marymount University. His interests are in applied mathematics, special functions, and integral transforms. Dr. Zill received his Ph.D. in applied mathematics and his M.S. from Iowa State University in 1967 and 1964, respectively. He received his B.A. from St. Mary's in Winona, Minnesota, in 1962. Dr. Zill also is former chair of the Mathematics Department at Loyola Marymount University. He is the author or co-author of 13 mathematics texts.

A good application oriented text.

I think before reading all other reviews of Zill's text, one must consider who did the 'panning'. Was it an instructor who used it to teach the class or a disgrunteled student who was unhappy about taking the class in the first place or unhappy with the grade received? This text is a little easier to read than most. It could be more thorough, but that would not be necessary for an undergraduate class. Professionally, I would prefer numerical methods come earlier, but I have no other criticism. I use it to teach DE and the good students all seem to like it while those who are failing would not like anything associated with the course. I don't necessarily cover the topics in the same order as the chapters are laid out, but the book is versatile enough that it doesn't cause any problems.

Simply one of the worst Math books I have used

I am sorry that there isn't a rating less than one star. When I read this book, I thought that Zill's intent was to confuse and mislead. The book's chapters contain unclear examples and vauge explanations of the material. Zill tends to place all of the very important ideas and concepts that are directly related to the exercises in small "footnotes" at the end of each chapter. The only joy I got out of this book was, at the beginning of some chapters, reading sentences where Zill seemed to be inspired where he would say things like, "It is one of the more interesting facts of mathematical life...". Unless you are interested in pain, avoid this book like the plague.

This is an excellent text

The approach by Zill is pedagogically sound...though it requires that the student be very well grounded in the fundamentals prior to starting the text. I believe Zill wants you to take a very active approach to how you learn the material: this is evidenced by the dearth of solutions in the back of the text. Many undergraduates approach subjects through memorization as the means to learning the subject; this approach does not give the student any notion of how to solve problems...all jobs in the real world are problems...I recommend this book!

About the Author
Jimmie Gilbert was Professor of Mathematics at the University of South Carolina, Upstate. He received his Ph.D from Auburn University with a specialty in Linear and Abstract Algebras. He authored the first edition of Elements of Modern Algebra in 1970, joined on subsequent editions by his wife and longtime co-author Linda Gilbert. Together they have published titles in College Algebra, Precalculus, College Algebra and Trigonometry, Trigonometry, Intermediate Algebra, and another Cengage Learning title, Linear Algebra and Matrix Theory, now in its second edition. He and Linda have 6 children and 8 grandchildren. In his leisure time Jimmie enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, and gardening.

Linda Gilbert received her Ph.D. from Louisiana Tech University with a specialty in Linear and Abstract Algebras. She has been writing textbooks since 1981 with her husband Jimmie Gilbert, including ELEMENTS OF MODERN ALGEBRA and LINEAR ALGEBRA and MATRIX THEORY (now in its second edition) with Cengage Learning, plus titles in College Algebra, Precalculus, College Algebra and Trigonometry, Trigonometry, and Intermediate Algebra.

Great Book

I found the ideas in this book to be very accesible to the student with little mathematics experience (as I have). It is very straight foward, contains illuminating example problems, and even has an application section at the end of each chapter. Many abstract algebra books assume that you can prove anything. However, Gilbert's book focuses on the techniques of learning how to prove.

An excellent introduction to higher mathematics

I thoroughly enjoyed my modern algebra class, with an excellent professor and this excellent book. The book is very clearly written, and the concepts of sets, groups, rings, fields, and number systems are explained with detail. This is especially important since my summer research in number theory requires an understanding of these algebraic structures.

My Best Math Book

This is definitely one of my best math books. The main feature of this book is that the readers feel very easy to follow the provided concepts and understand what is important. I really don't know any other book as good as this one. Probably only David C. Lay's "Linear Algebra and Its Applications" can compete with this one. I truly recommend anyone who studies modern algebra to take a look at this. Good luck!

This book was almost 80$ it was small and flimsy and the information was not useful at all. The models offered in the book were redundant and not useful in a crisis situation. I would not reccomend this book. I returned it.

Decent, but not overwhelmingly so.....

Before I go in depth about the book, I want to talk about my background. Im a Masters Level counseling student and this is one of the books I had to read for class. I would give this at least three stars if someone was interested in crisis intervention who had no prior experience with counseling techniques.

The book had several flaws, despite this there were some strengths. Below I will make a list of what the pros and cons of the book were

+Lots of citations and research
+Throughly goes over the Triage Assessment Form
+Three good complete case studies
+For the most part easy to follow

-ALOT of overlapping information. There is a chapter dedicated to exclusively to each cognitive, behavioral, and affective reactions. While this may not be unjustified, the book repeats alot of the same information that overlaps between the three. Its on a scale, dont pressure the client, be careful for cultural differences, etc.

-It is a plus that the book is easy to follow, but this is a double edged sword. The author likes to use lists with a paragraph dedicated to each item on the list. First. Second. Third. etc. This gets a little mind numbing after awhile. To be fair, rather an easy read than an interesting read given the graveness of the context.

-Alot of the research isnt something directly useful and is very anecdotal / circumstantial. While I strongly agree that the counselor should be aware of cultural facets, scattering random tid bits of information throughout the chapters is hardly helpful.

Anecdotal: African Americans MAY be more expressive of their emotions as they grieve (pg. 47)
Circumstantial: Asian Americans orientation is primarily past and present (pg. 68)

-Some slightly ambivalent information. For example the book emphasizes the intervention starts on the most affected domain. Yet on the first case study the psychologist had the client talk about her emotions (the lesser affected domain) because they were blocking her cognitions.

-Chapter 2 assessment models is rather useless (but luckily short). The focus of the book is on the Triage Assessment Form; a form that is expectantly provided in the back of the book. Comparing the TAF to other forms which the book doesnt cover, much less provide, does little for my understanding of anything.

If you are a teacher considering this for masters level students, my recommendation would be not to. I believe it would be much more useful to (with permission) give the students copies of the TAF and explain it in class. And maybe even have the students do a few case studies. In my opinion, there is no justification for a student needing to pay 55 dollars for this book as a supplemental reading.

If you have no prior knowledge in crisis intervention, which is likely since volunteers are a 6:1 ratio with professionals, this may be a good supplementary reading. I said the book "at least 3 stars" for non-counseling students because I havent looked at what else is out there for volunteers, I dont plan to either ( ;

About the Author
Tom Garrison (Ph.D., University of Southern California) is emeritus professor of Marine Science at Orange Coast College (OCC) in Costa Mesa, California, one of the largest undergraduate marine science departments in the United States. Dr. Garrison also holds an adjunct professorship at the University of Southern California. He has been named the country's Outstanding Marine Educator by the National Marine Technology Society, is a founding member of COSEE, writes a regular column for the journal Oceanography, and has written for National Geographic magazine. He was a winner of the prestigious Salgo-Noren Foundation Award for Excellence in College Teaching. Dr. Garrison was an Emmy Award team participant as writer and science advisor for the PBS syndicated Oceanus television series, and writer and science advisor for The Endless Voyage, a set of television programs in oceanography completed in 2003. His widely used textbooks in oceanography and marine science are the college market's best sellers. In 2009, the faculty of OCC selected Dr. Garrison as the institution's first Distinguished Professor, and in 2010, he was honored by the Association of Community College Trustees as the outstanding community college professor in western North America. His interest in the ocean dates from his earliest memories. As he grew up with a U.S. Navy admiral as a dad, the subject was hard to avoid! He had the good fortune to meet great teachers who supported and encouraged this interest. Years as a midshipman and commissioned naval officer continued the marine emphasis; graduate school and 421 years of teaching has allowed him to pass his oceanic enthusiasm to more than 65,000 students. Although he retired from full-time professoring in 2011, he continues to bother OCC staff and students on a regular basis.

Best textbook I've ever read.

This textbook is very well written. It is ubnderstandible to students and others of all ages and interests. It contains intersting color pictures and graphics about the subject material for each chapter. Each chapter also contains web links to a homepage that accompanies the book. The book is full of intersting personal stories, history, theory, and facts. Dr. Garrison and all who have contributed to this book have set the standard for textbooks and integrated learning for the next decade.

This is a wonderful book. the pictures are great, and it is quite easy to read. my middle school students are using it to learn more about the ocean, and even though the text is not new, it is very affordable and highly informative.

Often times, instructors have to bring outside case studies to the classroom to make sense of theoretical models. This book bridges theory to practice enhancing learning and application of field observations. The authors' preparation for the text was obviously extensive . . . well researched . . . current citations. The authors also link traditional development theories to current controversies in child rearing and development. This is great!"

About the Author
Barbara M. Newman (Ph.D., University of Michigan) is a professor in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies at the University of Rhode Island. She has also been on the faculty at Russell Sage College and The Ohio State University, where she served as department chair in Human Development and Family Science and as associate provost for Faculty Recruitment and Development. She teaches courses in life-span development, adolescence, family theories, and the research process. Also an active researcher, Dr. Newman's interests focus on parent-child relationships in early adolescence, factors that promote success in the transition to high school, and the use of the cohort sequential design as an approach to the study of development. Her research includes an analysis of the role of family, peer, and school support in the transition to high school (funded by the University of Rhode Island's Research Foundation). For fun, Newman enjoys reading, making up projects with her grandchildren, taking walks along Narragansett Bay and Block Island Sound, and spending time with her family.

Philip R. Newman (Ph.D., University of Michigan) is involved in research on the transition to high school as well as on group identity and alienation. His projects include an analysis of issues related to disrupted transitions in adolescence and early adulthood, and a book about how high schools can meet the psychosocial needs of adolescents. He has taught courses in introductory psychology, adolescence, social psychology, developmental psychology, counseling, and family, school, and community contexts for development. He served as the director for Research and Evaluation of the Young Scholars Program at The Ohio State University and as the director of the Human Behavior Curriculum Project for the American Psychological Association. He is a fellow of the American Psychological Association, the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues (SPSSI), and the American Orthopsychiatric Association. For fun, Newman enjoys photography, reading mysteries, attending concerts and Broadway plays, and watching baseball. He home schooled his three children through elementary and middle school. Together, the Newmans have worked on programs to bring low-income minority youths to college and to study the processes involved in their academic success. They are coauthors of 13 books, including a book on theories of human development, and numerous articles in the field of human development.

Great Book

This book is required reading for my current graduate class: Human Growth & Development. It is a great book that provides in-depth info about human development throughout the lifespan. What's especially helpful is that every life stage is neatly broken down into seperate chapters, and every chapter details the impact of biological,psychological, and social factors on growth. This book will definitely help in understanding the process of growth and change in your own life.

I wish I'd known this was a binder book instead of one with binding. I'm not too disappointed since this is the best price I've seen for this book, but now I need a binder to put it in.

Kindle edition great, but no page numbers for Fire

I purchased the Kindle version since the price was more than half off the new hard copy price. The only downside I have found so far is that there are no page numbers available. Having no page numbers makes it more difficult to cite when writing papers. I have a Kindle Fire and do not know if it's the same for all kindle versions. This was the first textbook I have purchased for a Kindle and do not know if this is common or not.
In the description of the book, it states there are 621 pages. It doesn't explicitly state if the Kindle version comes with pages numbers.

About the Author
The late James Stewart received his M.S. from Stanford University and his Ph.D. from the University of Toronto. He did research at the University of London and was influenced by the famous mathematician George Polya at Stanford University. Stewart was most recently Professor of Mathematics at McMaster University, and his research field was harmonic analysis. Stewart was the author of a best-selling calculus textbook series published by Cengage Learning, including CALCULUS, CALCULUS: EARLY TRANSCENDENTALS, and CALCULUS: CONCEPTS AND CONTEXTS, as well as a series of precalculus texts.

This solutions guide does not include the last third of the chapters in the text book. If you are taking Cal III, this book will NOT help you out. However, if you are taking Cal I or Cal II and useing Stewart's Calculus, this is a great companion to it.

Student Solutions Manual for Stewarts Calculus, Vol 2

This book does cover the last third of the text book. Two of the other reviews are incorrectly referring to the Vol 1 (ISBN 0-534-21799-0)manual which does cover the first portion of the book. They are incorrect.

About the Author
Daryl L. Logan is Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. He received his Ph.D. in 1972 from the University of Illinois -- Chicago. He has been a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), Tau Beta Pi - National Honor Society, and the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE). He holds a Professional Engineer's License in the state of Indiana.

The best introductory book written in finite element method

The chapters are very well organized. The material is very easy to understand. There are several fully worked out problems in each chapter that gives a solid foundation of the theory discussed in that chapter. Variational methods and Galerkin formulations are very well explained in a manner that is very easy to understand. Although most of the concentration is on solid mechanics and heat transfer, there is a brief introduction to cfd. Overall, this book is a must, if you are planning to continue you studies in applied mechanics or related fields. I sincerely hope that the author Daryl.L. Logan has plans to write a similar book in Non-Linear Finite Element Analysis.

Nothing Great about it

I have used this book as Beginner of FEA and didn't find it interesting. It deals with more theoretical aspects of FEA. It does really deal with using FEA on a regular basis. May be it's the person who taught the class made me disinterested in the book... others might find it interesting. I believe that the Theory behind FEA is important before even you start working on the software, but this is not the book I would recommend to read before you start.

Logic, language and notations have made all the difference.

Topics builds up in a logical order. The language
used through out is stimulating and easy to
understand. Mathematical notations are straight
forward.

This book is a must have for both begginners and the seasoned professionals who do Finite
Element Analyis.
