About the Author
Ian Neath is a professor in the Department of Psychology at Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada. He received his Ph.D. in cognitive psychology from Yale University in 1991. His research currently focuses on seeking evidence for general principles of memory that apply widely over different time scales, different tests, and different hypothetical underlying memory systems. In addition to publishing many articles on memory in peer-reviewed journals, he co-authored the Cengage textbook HUMAN MEMORY: AN INTRODUCTION TO RESEARCH, DATA, AND THEORY, 2nd edition; COGLAB on a CD; and COGLAB Reader.

Reads like a stream of consciousness novel

This book covers a great deal of research in memory by condensing each paper into a 1-2 paragraph summary. As a result, the writing is often vague and confusing. Making matters worse, the book seems to be a rough draft published without the benefit of an editor. The sentences are convoluted, terms are poorly defined and used inconsistently, and the material is disorganized. There is no unifying framework for understanding all the research results presented. The lack of organization makes it unsuitable even as a reference.

In short, this book has nothing to recommend it.

Although I am a psych student with a pretty good GPA, I find this book difficult to understand. The difficulty seems to come from the authors' desire to condense as much information as possible in just a few hundred pages. This leads to a cryptic language, where some terms are defined only once and some sentences become a string of such words, a thing which ,personally, frustrated me.

Not recommended.

This book is poorly written, and I found some parts to be repetitive. Although I normally do well in my undergraduate psychology classes, I found this book dreadful to read through, as the author doesn't write in a way that would make the concepts easier to understand. It's just not concise as the other psych books I've gone through. A dry read.

About the Author
The late James Stewart received his M.S. from Stanford University and his Ph.D. from the University of Toronto. He did research at the University of London and was influenced by the famous mathematician George Polya at Stanford University. Stewart was most recently Professor of Mathematics at McMaster University, and his research field was harmonic analysis. Stewart was the author of a best-selling calculus textbook series published by Cengage Learning, including CALCULUS, CALCULUS: EARLY TRANSCENDENTALS, and CALCULUS: CONCEPTS AND CONTEXTS, as well as a series of precalculus texts.

Seriously one of the worst textbooks I have ever encountered. Examples and instructions are awful and completely missing in some cases. I feel bad for anyone who is taking a class with this text.

Fails epically at its fundamental responsibility: teaching

Of the 18 math textbooks I've used in my academic lifetime, this is the worst by a mile. Let's start with the unforgivable flaw: it does a terrible job explaining mathematical concepts. Mr. Stewart seems to assume absolute mastery of all material involved (often high-level algebra and trigonometry) -- an assumption that causes him to frequently skip or combine steps in explanations, which can leave you scratching your head at how the hell he arrived at the conclusion (sometimes he even seems to assume you know the very thing he's supposed to be teaching you). I found that reading the intro & examples for any given section gives adequate training to solve the first 10 or 20 problems, but for the remaining 30 you're on your own, stuck there staring blankly at the page, frustrated at having no educational resource to turn to. If you want to survive whatever class force-feeds this textbook down your throat, you'd better hope to end up with a professor who's clear and helpful enough to compensate (do prior research on ratemyprofessors.com), because you won't get far relying on this book alone.

For the record, I'm not a moron. I scored 91%ile on the math SAT, got an A in the course preceding this one (Precalculus), and have always felt comfortable with math. This book made me feel pretty dumb until I found all the Amazon reviews on Stewart's other calc books making the same complaints. Don't let it get you down.

We can dock further points for being 1,000+ pages thick, not very solidly constructed (the binding gets weak and wiggly pretty fast), and with a sticker closing in on $160, outrageously overpriced.

About the Author
Raymond G. Miltenberger received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology in 1985 from Western Michigan University. He is currently a professor and director of the Applied Behavior Analysis Program at the University of South Florida. Dr. Miltenberger conducts applied behavior analysis research with his students and publishes widely in the areas of sports and fitness, functional assessment and treatment of behavioral disorders, and self-protection skills training. He utilizes behavior modification in clinical work with children and individuals with intellectual disability.

Clear overview of behavior principles

I read this book to deepen my knowledge in the area of behavior modification. I especially liked the succinct and clear examples and the discussion of applications and misapplications of each procedure. Thereby, one learns the strenghts and possible pitfalls of behavior principles when applying to daily life. Throughout the book, the author uses easy to understand language and urges the reader to apply the learned principles to his own self-management projects.

I was personally disappointed when receiving the book. Particulary disappointed : In matter of content, which is clearly not bad, it is easy to find superior introductory manuals in the field. Certainly not a major book nor a classic as suggested in the presentation.

However, if you are attracted by strange phenomenas in the edition sector, you'll not miss this unique opportunity to acquire for a high price, one of the most fragile, cheep and poorly manufactured book I ever see. A unique book that destroy itself when you turn the pages or touch the "soft" ( very, very soft ) cover.

This is a great book!

If you want to learn the theory behind Probability and Statistics, this is the book that you would like to start with. Unlike other books titled like "Prob for Engineers" and such, this book develops the theory in a solid layout, including introductions to some advanced topics like order statistics. It also includes a wide range of tables which makes it a good reference book.

But, beware. If you are a novice in math or probability, you must avoid this book. This is an intermediate book for a graduate student who has taken a simple introductory probability course in undergrad and wants to pursue more advanced topics. And, in this sense, it does its job very well. Strongly recommended...

This is a well-organized learning text, and great reference.

I am currently a graduate student in Statistics, and I highly recommend this book to anyone who plans to concentrate in Statistics. Although the level of the text has been rated "difficult" by other reviewers here, I find that it is very clear and complete. For comparison, it is at a lower level than Casella & Berger, but above an introductory text. It covers the methods and theory well, without delving too deeply into overly general/rigorous definitions. I would recommend this text for Mathematics and Engineering students, as well as to students in Statistics as an early text.

Excellent introduction but you'll need some analysis to really understand the book

Very good introduction to mathematical statistics. One word of warning though, although on the surface it may seem that only a familiarity with multivariate calculus is required to use this book successfully, in actuality a familiarity with analysis would be highly valuable, particularly the basic notions of limits for sequences, series, functions, and sequences of functions. Without this familiarity many of the fundamental notions of the frequentist interpretation of probability presented in this book will be lost on the reader.

Also, be prepared to research particular propositions and theorems independently (thank you Google). Mathematical statistics is simply to broad and deep of a subject to be able to provide a complete presentation of the subject in a single book. In many instances I just found it particularly helpful to look at the same concept from a slightly different perspective.

After reading many of the negative reviews of this book I think these are the two primary sources of problems encountered by unsatisfied readers. One, they do not have a working familiarity with the notions of limits and two they do not realize that you'll need to do independent research to fully understand the material. To be honest, at the level that this textbook is written at there is just no way around these two issues. If the book didn't require this of the reader it would just be another introductory non-mathematical statistics book.

Technical Calculus with Analytic Geometry by Peter Kuhfittig

This is a great textbook for first timers learning calculus or just as a refresher for the basic concpets. The author Peter Kuhfittig keeps all the concepts together and doesn't bog down the reader with extremely long mathematically definitions. He gives the reader example problems and then plenty of problems to work. The only recommendation I would make to the author is to put every odd problem's solution or some even problem solutions in the solutions manual since they (even problems) or usually the harder problems to work out anyway. Only every other odd problem's solution is in the "Solutions Manual".

Some how this 3rd edition solutions manual got combined in a section that said items bought together with the 4th edition text book, so I bought the wrong edition
Doesn't have many answers, maybe like every other problem. I would think that a solutions manual had all the answers for a book but it doesn't

About the Author
The late James Stewart received his M.S. from Stanford University and his Ph.D. from the University of Toronto. He did research at the University of London and was influenced by the famous mathematician George Polya at Stanford University. Stewart was most recently Professor of Mathematics at McMaster University, and his research field was harmonic analysis. Stewart was the author of a best-selling calculus textbook series published by Cengage Learning, including CALCULUS, CALCULUS: EARLY TRANSCENDENTALS, and CALCULUS: CONCEPTS AND CONTEXTS, as well as a series of precalculus texts.

Lothar Redlin grew up on Vancouver Island, received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Victoria, and a Ph.D. from McMaster University in 1978. He subsequently did research and taught at the University of Washington, the University of Waterloo, and California State University, Long Beach. He is currently Professor of Mathematics at The Pennsylvania State University, Abington Campus. His research field is topology.

Saleem Watson received his Bachelor of Science degree from Andrews University in Michigan. He did graduate studies at Dalhousie University and McMaster University, where he received his Ph.D. in 1978. He subsequently did research at the Mathematics Institute of the University of Warsaw in Poland. He also taught at The Pennsylvania State University. He is currently Professor of Mathematics at California State University, Long Beach. His research field is functional analysis.

Great for Self Study

I was informed by another student that there were minor differences in the text from the 4th and 5th editions of the textbook. I being a self learner who was reviewing material taken twenty years ago decided to save a considerable amount of money with the older version. I was later able successfully pass the College Alegebra exam required for my program.

About the Author
Stephen J. Freeman is a professor of Counseling and Chair of the Department of Counselor Education at California State University, Sacramento. Dr. Freeman served on the graduate faculty at Texas Woman¿s University for 18 years where he was the Coordinator of the Counseling and Development Program. He also maintained a private practice in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Dr Freeman has published on a variety of topics relating to death, grief, and loss and is the author of the book ETHICS: AN INTRODUCTION TO PHILOSOPHY AND PRACTICE.

Well worth owning

This book was such a great reference and learning tool, that I had to buy it! I had this book in an online college class, which gave it to me as an esource, with no hard copy. While some chapters were dry, most of the book is easy to read and offers great scenarios to human service professionals.

Excellent Book !

This book is concise and thorough. Using good models, principles, and techniques, the author guides the reader to a cleaner, more concise assessment to the client. Using the Levels of Intervention Model, the social worker is shown a method of assessment that easily becomes intrinsic. I highly recommend social workers to read and incorporate the principles found in this book.

Conceptually Masterful

I disagree strongly with the other negative reviews I have read of this book. To my mind, this book provides one of the best explanations of the principles of physics that I have ever encountered. It does so by emphasizing a conceptual, not a mathematical, approach to physics. As a result, the book perhaps not speak to anyone who wants to "plug and chug" his or her way through a course in physics with the least amount of mental effort. But, for anyone who wants to truly understand the very difficult and sometimes experientially counterintuitive underlying principles of physics (it's no accident that it took thousands of years until Isaac Newton finally put together the deceptively simple laws of mechanics), this book is a must read. It's all here -- clear, lucid, thoughtful explanations, historical context, practical applications -- for anyone willing to invest in the difficult mental work necessary to understand this beautiful science.

By far the best of the physics for non-science majors textbooks

Kirkpatrick and Wheeler have done a superb job of expressing the dynamics of physics in terms easily digestible by the beginning student.

As is appropriate for a text for non-majors, the book puts forth much effort to make the analytical concepts comprehensible to
those who are not fluent in physical science and who are uncomfortable with mathematics.

Horrible book

This is the most wordy, un-inspiring physics book ever published. I honestly pity the poor students whose first exposure to Physics is this sorry expose` -- they are missing out on a truly exciting field that should inspire them - not confuse, bore and orate. Where simplification is called for the book resports to verbosity beyind comprehension.
