About the Author
Wayne L. Winston is Professor Emeritus of Decision Sciences at the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University and is now a Professor of Decision and Information Sciences at the Bauer College at the University of Houston. He has won more than 45 teaching awards, including the school-wide MBA award six times. His current interest is in showing how spreadsheet models can be used to solve business problems in all disciplines, particularly in finance, sports, and marketing. In addition to publishing more than 20 articles in leading journals, Dr. Winston has written such successful textbooks as OPERATIONS RESEARCH: APPLICATIONS AND ALGORITHMS, MATHEMATICAL PROGRAMMING: APPLICATIONS AND ALGORITHMS, SIMULATION MODELING WITH @RISK, DATA ANALYSIS FOR MANAGERS, SPREADSHEET MODELING AND APPLICATIONS, MATHLETICS, DATA ANALYSIS AND BUSINESS MODELING WITH EXCEL 2013, MARKETING ANALYTICS, and FINANCIAL MODELS USING SIMULATION AND OPTIMIZATION. It is not for self-study at all.

It is for intermediate students or professionals. So you must know some basic linear algebra although it provides some. You can not check your solutions because it does not provide solutions manual. I did not try it`s software. Good for OR. I found it`s instructor`s solutions manual ISBN: 0-534-230-490. You can find it (online). You can find it`s instructor`s manual from w.ecampus.com, w.abebooks.com, w.opamp.com or w.alibris.com So you can check your answers.

excellent elementary book with an unconventional approach

Roger Hoerl is a famous industrial statistician who is currently the head of corporate research and development in statistics at a well known company where he took over recently when Gerry Hahn retired. In addition to his contributions to ridge regression Hoerl has written a number of fine statistical texts and has been very influential in emphasizing the growing need and demand for statistical methods in industry (work that may be done by non-statisticians). With the widespread availability of statistical software, the layperson is gaining the ability to do fairly sophisticated statistical analyses. For these people to be successful it is important that they understand the fundamentals and not just how to turn the crank on a particular procedure. Users of statistical methods must understand the concepts of variability and randomness and be able to know when statistical methodology can be helpful and when it cannot. This also means being able to question the underlying assumptions in a statistical model.

Hoerl and Snee accomplish this by teaching the principles and giving the student ideas to help him think statistically. This is different from the traditional approaches of most business statistics texts. Chapters 1 and 2 emphasize concepts before delving into techniques. Software tools...are introduced as needed. The underlying theory is well covered in chapter 9, but note that the authors have deliberately left the theory to the end of the book. The applications and illustration of techniques come first to teach the how and why. In the end the reader can be satisfied to learn the mathematical justification. Chapter 10 reviews what has been learned through two case studies and directs the student on how to take further steps to more advanced topics.

Absolutely Wonderful book

Used this book in a 400 level business statistics class, great book overall. Is quite a bit different from most statistics books that I have encountered, however I think that difference is what makes it so effective, this book has been a big eye-opener in viewing everything as a process. The book focuses on principals and the different tools that are available rather than focusing on drilling students with problems. I figure the authors understand that these days computers and statistics software is widely available, so the mathematics behind the techniques is only lightly touched upon. Book finishes up with some theory and a few useful appendixes that go more indepth into certain topics (such as surveying, probability distributions and process reengineering). This is also the book that introduced me to the wonders and excitement of experimental design, which it does a nice job introducing you and preparing you for more advanced texts such as Montgomery's Design of Experiments text.

Generally speaking, the students think that statistic is a collection of mathematical formulas that they have to know to be approved in their module.

This book helps to put statistic in the center of business process. Statistic becomes part of something and not a entity complete separated from the subject matter.

The weakness of the book is to change the usual order of descriptive, probability and inference.

A good book that any lecture who is interested in motivate students should own.

A solid revision of a very useful textbook and clinical practice resource. Numerous typographical and typesetting errors will annoy those who expect more from the publishers of this social work classic, who appear to have rushed publication. Infotrac has only marginal value to working professionals and no value for enrolled students with library access. Wait for the second printing or stick with the 5th edition if you can.

Many mathematical statistics texts are heavily oriented toward a rigorous mathematical development of probability and statistics, without much attention paid to how statistics is actually used.. In contrast, Modern Mathematical Statistics with Applications, Second Edition strikes a balance between mathematical foundations and statistical practice. In keeping with the recommendation that every math student should study statistics and probability with an emphasis on data analysis, accomplished authors Jay Devore and Kenneth Berk make statistical concepts and methods clear and relevant through careful explanations and a broad range of applications involving real data.

 

The main focus of the book is on presenting and illustrating methods of inferential statistics that are useful in research.  It begins with a chapter on descriptive statistics that immediately exposes the reader to real data.  The next six chapters develop the probability material that bridges the gap between descriptive and inferential statistics.  Point estimation, inferences based on statistical intervals, and hypothesis testing are then introduced in the next three chapters.  The remainder of the book explores the use of this methodology in a variety of more complex settings.

 

This edition includes a plethora of new exercises, a number of which are similar to what would be encountered on the actuarial exams that cover probability and statistics. Representative applications include investigating whether the average tip percentage in a particular restaurant exceeds the standard 15%, considering whether the flavor and aroma of Champagne are affected by bottle temperature or type of pour, modeling the relationship between college graduation rate and average SAT score, and assessing the likelihood of O-ring failure in space shuttle launches as related to launch temperature.

About the Author
Jay Devore is Professor Emeritus of Statistics at California Polytechnic State University. He earned his undergraduate degree in Engineering Science from the University of California at Berkeley, spent a year at the University of Sheffield in England, and finished his Ph.D. in statistics at Stanford University. Jay previously taught at the University of Florida and at Oberlin College and has had visiting appointments at Stanford, Harvard, the University of Washington, New York University, and Columbia University. From 1998 to 2006, he served as Chair of the Statistics Department. In addition to this book, Jay has written several widely used engineering statistics texts and a book in applied mathematical statistics. He recently coauthored a text in probability and stochastic processes. He is the recipient of a distinguished teaching award from Cal Poly, is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association , and has served several terms as an Associate Editor of the "Journal of the American Statistical Association." In his spare time, he enjoys reading, cooking and eating good food, tennis, and travel to faraway places. He is especially proud of his wife, Carol, a retired elementary school teacher, his daughter Allison, who has held several high-level positions in nonprofit organizations in Boston and New York City, and his daughter Teresa, an ESL teacher in New York City.

Ken Berk has a BS in Physics from Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie Mellon) and a PhD in Mathematics from Minnesota. He is Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at Illinois State University and a Fellow of the American Statistical Association. He founded the Software Reviews section of The American Statistician and edited it for six years. He served as Secretary/Treasurer, Program Chair, and Chair of the Statistical Computing Section of the American Statistical Association, and he twice co-chaired the Interface Symposium, the main annual meeting in statistical computing. His published work includes papers on time series, statistical computing, regression analysis, and statistical graphics and the book Data Analysis with Microsoft Excel (with Patrick Carey).

My all-time favorite text book

I think this is an excellent book. I used it for two semesters of mathematical statistics in my senior year of undergrad. I was an applied math major, so I really appreciated the way this book is organized. It doesn't get too theoretical or include tons of unnecessary proofs. Also, I found the book to be very user-friendly. It includes all necessary formulas, several examples, and many many practice problems with solutions to the odd problems in the back. Overall, I think it is well-written and very readable. I often referred back to this book in graduate school.

Good Entry Point.

Modern Mathematical Statistics by Devore and Berk is an excellent place to start your exploration of probability and statistics. While probability is a branch of mathematics, statistics is its own separate entity that is partially an outgrowth of probability. The authors choose to focus this book on the fundamental ideas of probability and statistics and the application of these ideas to many real life problems. I support this approach since it highlights the ever increasing need to know this material, while not obscuring what is actually going on with complicated math. A student only needs a year of calculus to understand the bulk of the book. Even with this restriction the authors manage to show the important results covered in any entry level book on probability or math stat.

The book is ideal for self study the since authors give many example problems, clear exposition, and a student solution manual. The authors use minitab, a statistical program, to highlight the role that statistical computing plays in data analysis. I like that a statistical program is used, but I have never seen minitab used anywhere in real life.

If I had to teach a class on these topics, I would use this book. Classes like probability and mathematical statistics are often comprised of a diverse audience. Not only will you have math and stat majors, but students from the physical and social sciences. The low amount of prerequisite math should give everyone a chance to succeed. If an instructor wants to examine a topic in more depth than what is presented here, he or she can always assign additional readings from a book like Rice, which shares the same basic philosophy, but presents the material at a higher level.

About the Author
Vernon Zunker is a retired professor from Southwest Texas State University. He earned his Ed.D. with an emphasis on counseling from the University of Houston and completed a residency in clinical psychology at the University of Texas Medical School at Galveston. Although retired from teaching, Dr. Zunker continues to push the discipline forward by keeping career counseling relevant to all counseling students.

not recommended covers too much for one book

I used this book for a graduate career counseling course. It didn't set career development in an economic history which would explain why theory developed the way it did. Additionally, the book doesn't explain many of the theories so the student can dilineate the differences between them. the author states that career counseling will soon integrate with other forms of counseling and yet, he doesn't point out obvious relationships between career theory and other psychological and developmental theories. There is a lot of guidence on counseling which covers both general and career skills. I would have liked the assessment section to be much bigger and more practical and the school assessment section to be much smaller. Zunker has an assessment book and should probably take his huge section on school counseling and make a book from that. All together the book was very dry and boring.

A full exposure of the topic - from History to Application

I read all the other reviews, I get a feeling they are all from students. As a practicing professional in this field for the past 20 years, I can say that as Boles'"What Color is your Parachute" is the bible for Job Seekers, Zunker's "Career Counseling: Applied concepts of Life Planning" is the bible for the Career Counselor. I find Zunker's information well exposed for easy comprehension. His writing style is simple and straight-forward. I believe the book is well structured for its purpose and didn't get a 5 star rating because It should be more economical in pricing.

Do not buy this book!

If at all avoidable, DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS TEXTBOOK!!!!!

I am a graduate student just beginning a new semester. I have read the first four chapters of this book and am frustrated and angry. It is so poorly written that I am having to read and re-read the text (only to discover that most of what is contained therein is just the repeated fluff of a few simple points made ad infinitum). There is very little useful information. Were I a professor grading this text as a paper, I would give it a "D" and recommend Zunker spend some serious time in the "writing lab". I cannot believe I paid $90 for this book.

About the Author
Michael R. Middleton is a Professor of Decision Sciences at the School of Business and Management, University of San Francisco, where he has taught since 1977. He is a member of the Decision Sciences Institute, the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences, and the American Statistical Association. He has published three books with Duxbury, delivered a variety of seminars and workshops in decision science, and authored two decision science software programs.

Data analysis using microsoft excel

The book is good: however, it is worth noting that I barely used. It was for a crash course in excel, and I worked for 2 years with excel, so I already was very comfortable with it. However it was a requirement for my course.
Nonetheless, the chapters I had to look at were very well explained.

Good fundamentals

The book is a good fundamentals review of Excel capability for statistical data analysis. This type of book is good to have as a reference for those not using Excel stats every day. Simple, and clear how to do it which I like. Dr. Middleton's style is simple and straightforward as noted in other software and publications which is great for those of us who are not staticians but need statistics to help convey risk, variability and analysis conclusions.

About the Author
Now retired, Mark S. Homan served as Chair of the Social Services Department at Pima Community College, where he taught for over 30 years. In addition to these duties, Mark has served as adjunct faculty and guest lecturer for colleges, universities, and training consortia in the United States, Russia, and Sweden. A strong advocate of community empowerment, Mark has worked with diverse populations in urban, rural, and reservation communities on a broad range of issues and has developed and directed several human services programs. He is the past Chair of the international Association for Community Organization and Social Administration (ACOSA), a founding member of community organizations and agencies, and has served in executive leadership roles on numerous community boards and councils. He has conducted workshops and delivered presentations on various aspects of community building and community power. The recipient of numerous awards for teaching excellence and for work with communities, Mark is also the author of RULES OF THE GAME: LESSONS FROM THE FIELD OF COMMUNITY CHANGE, which is used both as a textbook and as a practical guide for community change agents.

About the Author
Lyman Ott earned his Bachelor's degree in Mathematics and Education and Master's degree in Mathematics from Bucknell University, and Ph.D in Statistics from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute. After two years working in statistics in the pharmaceutical industry, Dr. Ott became assistant professor in the Statistic Department at the University of Florida in 1968 and was named associate professor in 1972. He joined Merrell-National laboratories in 1975 as head of the Biostatistics Department and then head of the company's Research Data Center. He later became director of Biomedical Information Systems, Vice President of Global Systems and Quality Improvement in Research and Development, and Senior Vice President Business Process Improvement and Biometrics. He retired from the pharmaceutical industry in 1998, and now serves as consultant and Board of Advisors member for Abundance Technologies, Inc. Dr. Ott has published extensively in scientific journals and authored or co-authored seven college textbooks including Basic Statistical Ideas for Managers, Statistics: A Tool for the Social Sciences and An Introduction to Statistical Methods and Data Analysis. He has been a member of the Industrial Research Institute, the Drug Information Association and the Biometrics Society. In addition, he is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association and received the Biostatistics Career Achievement Award from the Pharmaceutical research and Manufacturers of America in 1998. He was also an All-American soccer player in college and is a member of the Bucknell University Athletic Hall of Fame.

Michael Longnecker currently serves as Professor and Associate Department Head at Texas A&M University. He received his B.S. at Michigan Technological University, his first M.S. at Western Michigan University, his second M.S. at Florida State University, and his Ph.D. at Florida State University. He is interested in Nonparametrics, Statistical Process Control, and Statistical Consulting.

Shortly after I purchased this item, it came to my attention that the same material was offered free on the publisher's website. It is the exact same solutions guide in a downloadable pdf form. I am not sure why they even publish this book if they give away the same content for free.

Many Errors

As far as a solutions manual goes there's not much to expect but correct solutions and answers to problems. After going through many of the problems in the book I've learned not to trust this solutions manual. There are far too many errors in it. Therefor, it doesn't work very well because I feel like all it can do for me is confirm correct answers. If my answer doesn't agree with the book that doesn't necessarily mean it's wrong. I'm using this book for a class right now, so these errors have all been confirmed by somebody that knows a lot more than I do.

This is a rubbish manual; not understandable;nothing explained; Just did the calculation like a donkey. If you have the book you don't need the garbage solution manual.it such a terrible manual ever I had.The author used this as a commercial purpose not for the student help.This type of author should have thrown in the prison for defrauding with students.

About the Author
Joseph Walsh received his MSW and his Ph.D. from Ohio State University. He is Associate Professor of Social Work at Virginia Commonwealth University and teaches courses in generalist practice, clinical practice, research, and mental and emotional disorders. He has been a direct services practitioner in the field of mental health since 1974, first in a psychiatric hospital and later in community mental health center settings. Joe has provided services to older adult and general outpatient populations, but he specializes in services to people with serious mental illness and their families. He is the author of two other Brooks/Cole texts, CLINICAL CASE MANAGEMENT WITH PERSONS HAVING MENTAL ILLNESS and THEORIES FOR DIRECT SOCIAL WORK PRACTICE.
