"Prior to the adoption of this book (PHYSICS FOR SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS, 5th edition), the textbook was FUNDAMENTALS OF PHYSICS by Halliday and Resnick. Although Halliday and Resnick's book was the textbook chosen by the Physics Department, many students were observed by the faculty to be studying from Serway's book. The students had acquired old used versions of the Serway book, and they were actively studying out of this book rather than the prescribed textbook. Serway's book became our students' popular choice. The Physics Department, recognizing this, adopted a "give them what they want" attitude, and accordingly Serway's book was made the textbook for the calculus-based undergraduate physics course."

"Some of the general things I look for are the end-of-chapter questions and problems, and the quality of explanations. Feedback from students is also important--past students have given Serway more favorable reviews...another reason we went with Serway this semester."

"Quick Quizzes are a really good component. Pitfall Preventions answered a number of my criticisms of the text. I am very pleased with the overall emphasis on conceptual understanding. I have been very pleased with Serway. I have no expectations of switching texts in the near future."

About the Author
Raymond A. Serway received his doctorate at Illinois Institute of Technology and is Professor Emeritus at James Madison University. In 2011, he was awarded an honorary doctorate degree from his alma mater, Utica College. He received the 1990 Madison Scholar Award at James Madison University, where he taught for 17 years. Dr. Serway began his teaching career at Clarkson University, where he conducted research and taught from 1967 to 1980. He was the recipient of the Distinguished Teaching Award at Clarkson University in 1977 and the Alumni Achievement Award from Utica College in 1985. As Guest Scientist at the IBM Research Laboratory in Zurich, Switzerland, he worked with K. Alex Müller, 1987 Nobel Prize recipient. Dr. Serway also was a visiting scientist at Argonne National Laboratory, where he collaborated with his mentor and friend, the late Sam Marshall. In addition to PHYSICS FOR SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS, Dr. Serway is the coauthor of PRINCIPLES OF PHYSICS, Fifth Edition; COLLEGE PHYSICS, Ninth Edition; ESSENTIALS OF COLLEGE PHYSICS; MODERN PHYSICS, Third Edition; and the high school textbook PHYSICS, published by Holt McDougal. In addition, Dr. Serway has published more than 40 research papers in the field of condensed matter physics and has given more than 60 presentations at professional meetings. Dr. Serway and his wife Elizabeth enjoy traveling, playing golf, fishing, gardening, singing in the church choir, and especially spending quality time with their four children, nine grandchildren, and a recent great-grandson.

John W. Jewett, Jr., earned his undergraduate degree in physics at Drexel University and his doctorate at Ohio State University, specializing in optical and magnetic properties of condensed matter. Dr. Jewett began his academic career at Richard Stockton College of New Jersey, where he taught from 1974 to 1984. He is currently Emeritus Professor of Physics at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. Through his teaching career, Dr. Jewett has been active in promoting science education. In addition to receiving four National Science Foundation grants, he helped found and direct the Southern California Area Modern Physics Institute (SCAMPI) and Science IMPACT (Institute for Modern Pedagogy and Creative Teaching). Dr. Jewett's honors include the Stockton Merit Award at Richard Stockton College in 1980, selection as Outstanding Professor at California State Polytechnic University for 1991-1992, and the Excellence in Undergraduate Physics Teaching Award from the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) in 1998. In 2010, he received an Alumni Lifetime Achievement Award from Drexel University in recognition of his contributions in physics education. He has given over 100 presentations both domestically and abroad, including multiple presentations at national meetings of the AAPT. Dr. Jewett is the author of THE WORLD OF PHYSICS: MYSTERIES, MAGIC, AND MYTH, which provides many connections between physics and everyday experiences. In addition to his work on PHYSICS FOR SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS, he is the coauthor for PRINCIPLES OF PHYSICS, Fifth Edition, as well as GLOBAL ISSUES, a four-volume set of instruction manuals in integrated science for high school. Dr. Jewett enjoys playing keyboard with his all-physicist band, traveling, and collecting antique quack medical devices that can be used as demonstration apparatus in physics lectures. Most importantly, he relishes spending time with his wife Lisa and their children and grandchildren.

Good explanations & easy on the eyes layout

The first time I read a book by Tabachnik & Fidell, I was struggling with Multiple Regression and a friend recommended "Using Multivariate Statistics" by the same authors and I found their book to be much easier to read than the text recommended by our statistician-geek professor. So this time around when I found myself in an ANOVA class, I did a quick search on Amazon and found this book and decided to give it a try, since I had a good experience with their other book. It's expensive even by the standards of statistics books, but I found it totally worth it.

The authors use language that is easy to understand without talking down to its readers. They use interesting everyday examples that anyone from any field can relate with to explain the concepts of experimental design. Since this book just came out (2007), the SPSS examples are not too out of date. There's something comforting too about the stats output being in SPSS, the software I'm most familiar with.

Another factor in its favor is the layout of the book. I think a lot of people underestimate good page layout when it comes to textbooks, especially graduate-level textbooks. But coming from a graphic design background before going for my PhD in instructional design, I couldn't help noticing how 'friendly' the book looks even with the formulas and diagrams.

Finally, the CD-ROM itself contains:
-ASCII, Excel, Minitab, JMP, SAS and SPSS data files for using ANOVA
-R2 program
-Programs on calculating confidence intervals around effect sizes (noncf3.sps, noncf2.sas)
-Student solutions manual

So I give this book 5 stars (sheesh, never thought I'd actually write a glowing review for a statistics book, but there you go)

A good supplemental text

I took my first grad school statistics course. We were using a Maxwell and Delaney text, Designing Experiments and Analyzing Data (an impossibly convoluted text). My instructor,also my advisor, suggested this as a good supplement. It was. Between the two texts I pulled a B for the course. The SPSS portions are out of date, but that is understandable with publishing lag and the speed with which SPSS is updated. It is an excellent reference if you need to cite why you're doing a particular statistical adjustment or technique. I'm sure that I'll be using it for the rest of grad school.

DENNIS JAY KENNEY, a veteran of eight years of police service, is Director of Research and Planning for the Savannah, Georgia, Police Department.

James O. Finckenauer is Professor Emeritus and a Professorial Fellow at Rutgers University-Newark, and author or co-author of many books, including Asian Transnational Organized Crime. Professor Finckenauer was formerly Director of the International Center at the National Institute of Justice, and is past President of the International Association for the Study of Organized Crime and of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences.

About the Author
Robert Johnson (CISA, CGEIT, CISM, CISSP) has 20 years experience dealing with all aspects of information security, IT audit, risk management, and privacy compliance. His diverse background includes hands-on operational experience as well as providing strategic risk assessment and scoring for leadership and board-level audiences. Currently he works in the security risk management division of a large financial services insurance company. Previously he worked as a first vice president and IT audit and security advisory director at Washington Mutual (JP Morgan Chase).

Patricia J. Kuby is Professor of Mathematics at Monroe Community College in Rochester, New York. Prior to coming to MCC, she taught at the Rochester Institute of Technology and worked as a statistician and programmer at General Motors. Patricia has been a co-author of ELEMENTARY STATISTICS since the eighth edition, JUST THE ESSENTIALS OF ELEMENTARY STATISTICS since the ninth edition and STAT. She has also written the accompanying Instructor's Resource Manuals and Student Solutions Manuals. Patricia is an active advocate for incorporating MINITAB and Interactive Applets into online and on-campus statistics classes and has given presentations on each of these software packages, as well as the integration of a Student Response System (clickers) in a statistics class. While at RIT, Patricia received the Excellence in Adjunct Teaching Award. She also received the Monroe Community College 2004/2005 Writing Across the Curriculum Outstanding Faculty Award for the integration of writing components into her statistics courses and the 2007/2008 SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching. About the Author
S. Christian Albright received his B.S. degree in mathematics from Stanford in 1968 and his Ph.D. in operations research from Stanford in 1972. Since then, he has been teaching in the Operations and Decision Technologies Department in the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University. He has taught courses in management science, computer simulation, and statistics to all levels of business students: undergraduates, MBAs, and doctoral students. His current interest is in spreadsheet modeling, including development of VBA applications in Excel. Dr. Albright has published more than 20 articles in leading operations research journals in the area of applied probability. He has also published a number of successful textbooks, including DATA ANALYSIS AND DECISION MAKING, DATA ANALYSIS FOR MANAGERS, and SPREADSHEET MODELING AND APPLICATIONS.

Wayne L. Winston is Professor of Operations and Decision Technologies in the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University, where he has taught since 1975. Wayne received his B.S. degree in Mathematics from MIT and his Ph.D. degree in Operations Research from Yale. He has written the successful textbooks OPERATIONS RESEARCH: APPLICATIONS AND ALGORITHMS, MATHEMATICAL PROGRAMMING: APPLICATIONS AND ALGORITHMS, SIMULATION MODELING WITH @RISK, PRATICAL MANAGEMENT SCIENCE, DATA ANALYSIS FOR MANAGERS, SPREADSHEET MODELING AND APPLICATIONS, AND FINANCIAL MODELS USING SIMULATION AND OPTIMIZATION. Wayne has published over 20 articles in leading journals and has won many teaching awards, including the school-wide MBA award four times. His current interest is in showing how spreadsheet models can be used to solve business problems in all disciplines, particularly in finance and marketing.

Great Book, not what I expected

I bought the solution manual for this book, and found very good, to the point and description descriptions which were very application to the book I was using. I decided to buy the textbook it referred to, and while the book came well packaged and promptly, it was not exactly as I expected. The topics covered did not cover the array of problems I expected, but never the less were very thorough. The topics I was looking for were Flow Modeling, DEA and indepth Duality. Duality was briefly mentioned, but to even less detail than the text I had for my Management Science class.

About the Author
Dr. Robert E. O'Neill (M.A., Ph.D., University of California, Santa Barbara) is the chairperson of the Department of Special Education at the University of Utah. A Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), he previously served as the coordinator of the Program in Severe Disabilities and the Program in Mild/Moderate Disabilities in the department, and teaches in both areas. He also teaches in the department's master's and doctoral programs. Dr. O'Neill's recent work has focused on strategies for supporting persons exhibiting severe problem behaviors in a variety of community settings. His current work is concerned with the areas of functional assessment, teaching communication skills as alternatives to problem behaviors, school-wide behavioral support, and gender issues in emotional/behavioral disorders. He has published numerous articles, books, and book chapters and has presented at state, national, and international conferences. His work has appeared in, among other journals, the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, Exceptional Children, Research and Practice in Severe Disabilities, Education and Treatment of Children, Journal of Developmental and Physical Disabilities, and the Journal of Positive Behavioral Interventions.

Rob Horner, Ph.D., is Professor of Special Education at the University of Oregon. His research has focused on behavior analysis, instructional strategies for learners with severe disabilities, and systems change. He has worked for the past 18 years with George Sugai in development and implementation of school-wide positive behavior support (SWPBS), which is being implemented by more than 19,000 schools nationally. Research, evaluation and technical assistance outcomes from this effort indicate that investing in the development of a positive social culture is associated with improved behavioral and academic gains for students.

Richard W. Albin, Ph.D., is a Senior Research Associate/Associate Professor in the Department of Special Education and Clinical Sciences at the University of Oregon, where his teaching has included courses in programming and instruction, behavior and classroom management, grant writing, quantitative research methods, and single case research design. He has over thirty years of experience in research, program and model development, personnel preparation, and technical assistance related to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) of all ages. Since 1986, Dr. Albin has directed, coordinated, and collaborated in numerous federal and state funded projects. For fifteen years he was a Principal Researcher, Site Coordinator, and National Trainer for the Rehabilitation Research and Training Center on Positive Behavior Support. He has conducted and published research related to positive behavioral interventions and support, general case instructional procedures for learners with I/DD, and person-centered planning, and has collaborated in the development of training materials and provision of in-service training in positive behavior support. He is an associate editor for the Journal of Positive Behavior Interventions.

Keith Storey (Ph.D., University of Oregon) is a Professor of Education and the Special Education Program Chair at Touro University in Vallejo, California. Keith is the recipient of the 1988 Alice H. Hayden Award from The Association for Persons with Severe Handicaps; the 1996 Hau-Cheng Wang Fellowship from Chapman University, presented for exceptional merit in scholarship; and the 2001 Robert Gaylord-Ross Memorial Scholar Award from the California Association for Persons with Severe Disabilities. A member of the Illinois State University College of Education Alumni Hall of Fame, he serves on the editorial boards of Research and Practice for Persons with Severe Disabilities, Education and Treatment of Children, Career Development for Exceptional Individuals, Journal of Vocational Rehabilitation, Journal of Positive Behavior Interventions, and Education and Training in Autism and Developmental Disabilities. He has also published several books, including POSITIVE BEHAVIOR SUPPORTS IN CLASSROOMS AND SCHOOLS: EFFECTIVE AND PRACTICAL STRATEGIES FOR TEACHERS AND OTHER SERVICE PROVIDERS, and THE ROAD AHEAD: TRANSITION TO ADULT LIFE FOR PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES.

Dr. Jeffrey Sprague, Ph.D., is Professor of Special Education and Director of the University of Oregon Institute on Violence and Destructive Behavior. He directs federal, state, and local research and demonstration projects related to positive behavior interventions and supports, response to intervention, youth violence prevention, alternative education, juvenile delinquency prevention and treatment, and school safety. His research activities encompass applied behavior analysis, positive behavior supports, behavioral response to intervention, functional behavioral assessment, school safety, youth violence prevention, and juvenile delinquency prevention. In 1990 and 1997, Dr. Sprague co-authored the first guide to Functional Behavioral Assessment. He was a contributor to three President's Annual Reports on School Safety and has published widely, including books on crime prevention through environmental design for school administrators, school safety (with Hill Walker for Guilford Publications), school wide positive behavior interventions and supports (with Annemieke Golly, 2005), and Response to Intervention and Behavior Supports. Dr. Sprague currently directs an R01 research project from the National Institute on Drug Abuse to conduct the first evaluation of the effects of Positive Behavior Supports in middle schools, and is co-principal investigator on five Institute of Education Sciences Goal 2 development projects.

As my school district has been learning how to conduct functional behavior assessments, this is the book we keep passing around and referring to. It is practical, useful and the information is research based.

Good resource but horribly overpriced

This is a useful resource, but it is a $73 pamphlet. This should cost < $15 for the quality of the book and paper. It is not hardbound and the paper is about a step up from newsprint. For the price charged, it should have been a hardback on high-quality, acid-free paper, but it's nowhere close. If you can get a deal on a used version, do it.

Great resource to address behavior problems

This book is a fabulous resource for anyone working with children or adults who display inappropriate behaviors. Special Education teachers, administrators, Behavior Specialists, Counselors, Psychologists and people providing direct care will benefit from the hands-on tool. The book gives sample Behavioral Support Plans (Behavior Management Plans) derived from an excellent Functional Assessment Interview (FAI) tool. Readers will learn how to target the problem behavior and provide measurable objectives to address the behavior. A "must have" for anyone providing support to students or adults with behaviors and/or MR/DD.
