Jeffery A. Cole has been teaching mathematics and computer science at Anoka-Ramsey Community College since fall 1981. He started working on the Swokowski series of precalculus texts in 1985 as an ancillary author, and has been a co-author since 1991. His contribution to the Swokowski texts also includes joining the revision team of the calculus text in 1989.

A math book that leaves you stranded

This book is required by my college and dealing with it was the most unpleasant period of my life. Prior to using this book I used the Saxon Math Program in which each lesson contains enough information to learn the material without the help of an instructor. There is no way that you can teach yourself from this book if you don't all ready know the material, and many math professors are lazy and tell you to get the knowledge out of the book. The lesson material is too brief and the explanations are almost cryptic. The solutions manual that comes with it is supposed to have the answers to all the odd problems, but the author decided to leave out a couple of these problems in which the answer would take up a little more paper than the others, these are often the ones you need the solutions to, the book just leaves you stranded. If you have to use this book, I pity you, you better hope that you have a darn good math professor. If you don't have to use it, steer clear of it.

Solid math textbook

I'm a little torn on what to say about this book. On one hand, I have a huge amount of respect for this book. On the other hand, it's not an easy book to learn from.
I have no doubt that if people work through this book, they will be very knowledgable and skilled in the areas covered. It is, however, a slow, tedious, sometimes frustrating process. The authors are clearly proficient at math, but their style is pretty dry. It's a "just the facts, ma'am" approach to instruction. It would be nice to have perspective, interpretation, and helpful guidance in addition to straight math. It's kind of like reading a technical manual. I prefer a more engaging presentation.

I teach a high school class for advanced mathematics in preparation for college maths, and I honestly have to say that this is the worst book from which to teach. Yes, I can understand it perfectly, but a student will be lost the moment he or she lays eyes on the first page. The only good thing about this book is the number of exercises it has in each section.

Larry Brown (Ph.D, Princeton University) is a Senior Lecturer and coordinator for the general chemistry for engineers course at Texas A&M University. He received his B.S. in 1981 from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and his M. A. in 1983 from Princeton University. He was a Postdoctoral Fellow from 1986-88 at the University of Chicago. His research activities include active learning and use of technology in education and integration of chemistry with other subjects in the engineering curriculum. His current efforts are in (i) continued development of the CHEM 107 curriculum, (ii) improving uses of technology in chemical education, and (iii) incorporation of active learning strategies into large classroom settings. These efforts are brought together with the Foundation Coalition, an NSF-supported effort to implement a new model for the education of engineering students. Larry also monitors the CHEM 107 course for Texas A&M's campus in Qatar in the Middle East and has traveled there numerous times.

Tom Holme (Ph.D, Rice University) is a chemistry professor at Iowa State University and Director of the ACS Examinations Institute. He is active in both computational chemistry and chemical education research and has been involved with the general chemistry for engineers course at both Iowa State and the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee. About the Author
Susanna S. Epp received her Ph.D. in 1968 from the University of Chicago, taught briefly at Boston University and the University of Illinois at Chicago, and is currently Vincent DePaul Professor of Mathematical Sciences at DePaul University. After initial research in commutative algebra, she became interested in cognitive issues associated with teaching analytical thinking and proof and has published a number of articles and given many talks related to this topic. She has also spoken widely on discrete mathematics and has organized sessions at national meetings on discrete mathematics instruction. In addition to Discrete Mathematics with Applications and Discrete Mathematics: An Introduction to Mathematical Reasoning, she is co-author of Precalculus and Discrete Mathematics, which was developed as part of the University of Chicago School Mathematics Project. Epp co-organized an international symposium on teaching logical reasoning, sponsored by the Institute for Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science (DIMACS), and she was an associate editor of Mathematics Magazine from 1991 to 2001. Long active in the Mathematical Association of America (MAA), she is a co-author of the curricular guidelines for undergraduate mathematics programs: CUPM Curriculum Guide 2004.

Comparison of the top 3 Discrete Math Texts

I have read "Discrete Mathematics" by Epp, Rosen and Ross which are the three most common discrete math texts that I encounter at university.

Of these three, I would rate Epp's book as my favorite because it has the clearest explanations and is so easy to read that you can't help but feel like you understand all of the content completely. The only failing that Epp's book might have is that it is not as thorough in its coverage of the material as some of the more technical books. I would say that it covers about 90% of the material and leaves out some of the more obscure topics.

Rosen's book would be the most thorough, covering every topic in meticulous detail and offering a jumping point for other texts in cryptography and number theory. Although this book is more complete than Epp's, it is also less readable and requires more effort to get through. Ideally you would use Epp's book to learn the material and then go to Rosen's book for a technical reference.

For those of you who are considering Ross's book, I have one thing to say and that is don't. Although I have read this book and done a lot of the problems in the first 3/4 of the text, this book is neither clear in its explanations like Epp nor is it as complete as Rosen's book. If you are assigned this book for a course, my suggestion would be to buy Epp's book and photocopy the Ross homework problems from a friend's textbook.

Take the advice of someone who has read all three books. If you have to buy just one, then get the Epp book. It is better to understand 90% of the material completely rather than 100% of the material partially.

Good Improvements

I've taught discrete math from the 3rd Edition of this book at least 6 times, and struggled with several issues. (The textbook for our Discrete Math course is chosen by a committee in our department.) Much of a discrete math course involves looking closely at some very simple mathematics. Most of the mathematics is already known to a typical university freshman; what a set is, what a prime is, what an ordered pair is, etc. Of course they have had little rigor in these elementary topics, but still, they have the notions and vocabulary. The 3rd Edition pretended that sets, e.g., did not exist until one finally arrived at the chapter on sets. It's unnatural to lecture one's way through two chapters on logic and a chapter on techniques of proof, without being able to draw on simple examples from set theory. One gets tired quickly of examples of dogs and cats in highly artificial situations, and would like to say something about primes or the set of even integers.

The 4th Edition corrects this problem by the addition of an introductory chapter which fixes the vocabulary and notation. This was a needed change. The 3rd Edition required considerable acrobatics in avoiding words like "is an element of" until Chapter 5 (Set Theory.) Really? I'm supposed to cover the proof technique of "division into cases" and I can't say "the set of integers of the form 4k+1?" So good change.

Every semester, I get e-mails from my students asking if the previous edition of the text will suffice for my course. Usually, I say yes. In the case of my discrete math course, I'll have to say no. The modifications of this text are substantial. Besides the above, the old Chapter 8 (Recursion) is now incorporated into the new (much expanded) Chapter 5 (Sequences and Induction.) That is also a sensible change.

My remaining complain about the text is that it's a bit condescending. I think it's bad form to always present mathematics apologetically. "There, there now, I know it's difficult, but we'll go extremely slowly and take tiny, tiny bites covered in catsup so you can scarcely taste them." There's no need for us at the university level to re-enforce the bad attitudes the students learned in high school. It's math. It's hard. You can do it, not because math is made easy, but because you are, in fact, clever enough.

I would not have recommended the 3rd Edition to anyone, but I would recommend the 4th. I'm very happy with the changes.

This book brings a broad range of mathematic subjects - set theory, logic, how to write proof, induction proof, basic number theory, algorithm complexity and so on - that will benefit computer science students. Knowledge is broad but deep enough for ones to understand algorithm proof writing found in other algorithm books and certain mathematic concepts (which you may find it helpful/motivating later if deciding to have a look at/self-study some pure mathematic).

Good for learning the basics

Dallas Johnson has written a clear text on how to understand and correctly apply multivariate statistical techniques to real problems. If you want to understand the underlying theory there are other sources that you can go to including the texts by Muirhead, Anderson, Mardia and Eaton.

Light on understanding, heavy on computer output

A great text to learn the mechanics of multivariate analysis. Unfortunately, a poor one to learn what exactly you're doing!
The author and Duxbury Press disappoint the reader with many instances of improper writing and editing. Occasionally, misused prepositions and descriptors couple with notation errors in formulae to leave the reader totally clueless. For a 1st edition, this may be expected.
The first chapter's lame attempt to introduce the field tries to accomplish more than is possible with a student just launching into multivariate analysis.
Many derivations do not appear; the text provides only a reference. The author could have included them in the appendix for the interested student. Instead, much of the appendix explains a huge social science dataset. However, a part of the appendix reviewing linear algebra proved useful for this student.
Most "figures" are computer printouts. The text frequently references parts of the printout far away, requiring the reader to flip pages too much. The chapter exercises also emphasize computer analysis, with nearly all requiring statistical computing packages such as SAS, SPSS, etc. Although these reinforce the mechanics of analysis, they neither challenge the student to understand the fundamentals of the techniques nor hone critical thinking skills. For example, some exercises are more amenable to short answers. Yet the text contains no "answers to exercises" section anywhere.
For the reader who needs some theory and a lot of "hands on" information, this text may work. But it misses the mark for aspiring statistical consultants by diluting statistical concepts with reams of computer output.

An excellent book for practitioners of data analysis

If you are in the business of analyzing data, and do not have a degree in multivariate statistics, this book provides you the tools you need to get started right away. The author seems to have deep hands-on experience with the methods he is presenting and gives insights on their use in practice, often through well chosen and developed examples, that a pure theoretician would simply lack. I recommend it wholeheartedly to everyone who earns a living by analyzing data.

Disapointed!

I was disapointed to find out that this book only has the solutions for every-other problem! The same problems that the back of the book has. It was helpful that it worked the problems out and explained the written questions, still not worth it if you only get all the solutions!

The first statistics book i've ever read for pleasure...

I bought this book as a cheap international edition because, er, it was cheap. It turned out to be an excellent reference for understanding many useful concepts in multivariate analysis, and as another reviewer said, it clarifies many of the ideas with real examples. Because the style is so accessible, I ended up reading it as much out of interest as the need to learn about all the techniques. It lacks the rigor of some other texts, but there are plenty of them out there to refer to for more concrete proofs if you need them. Read this to understand the techniques...

In depth, but easy to understand.

"Analyzing Multivariate Data" is not just one the of the best multivariate data analysis texts available, but also one of the best structured text books that I have ever seen. After providing an introductory discussion of the prerequisite materials (namely matrices and regression analysis), Lattin, Carroll and Green cover all of the expected areas of multivariate analysis, specifically: principal components analysis, factor analysis, multidimensional scaling, cluster analysis, canonical correlation, structural equation models, analysis of variance, discriminant analysis and logit choice models. What makes this book stand out from other, similar, text books is how the material is structured. In each chapter, the authors explain all of the relevant mathematics behind the techniques, but also explain the concepts in laymans terms. Important questions are posed and answered, such as "when should this technique be used?" and worked examples are given. Furthermore, at the end of each chapter, the main points are summarized in point form and a large number of exercises are provided. The only drawback I can see is that the solutions to the exercises are not provided.

Even though this text covers material at a reasonably high level (this book would be suitable for later year undergraduates or graduate students), this is still an extremely user-friendly textbook. I just wish more texts were this well written.

Excellent bridge between practical use and rigor.

Analyzing Multivariate Data by Lattin, Carroll, and Green fills an important niche in practical statistics for the applied researcher. For a purely conceptual introduction, Sam Kash Kachigan (Multivariate Statistical Analysis) or Joseph Hair et al (Multivariate Data Analysis) are excellent references; for more rigorously mathematical approaches, Johnson & Wichern's and Donald Morrison's texts are excellent. Analyzing Multivariate Data bridges those two poles. The rigorous texts teach how to twirl matrices around like a flaming baton, but unless the researcher has insight into the art and science of the applications of the multivariate methods little will be understood. This is particularly important if the researcher uses point-and-click stat packages. For the applied researcher and grad student who want to know how and when to use the multivariate methods but want accessible supporting mathematics as well, this book is exceptional. I use it to explain the applications of the mathematically intensive methods I am learning in a grad multivariate class.

"Professor Belsky is an exceptionally gifted scholar and writer. Her illustrations and descriptions of research reveal accuracy and clarity that is almost touching. One of the gems in this book is beginning each chapter with a story from real life that focuses on what will be discussed in the chapter. . . . Throughout each chapter is sprinkled other anecdotes from real life that illustrate what the author is discussing in the more scholarly sections of the chapter. Such examples reinforce what I have thought all along, that textbooks need not be boring to read or sluggish to get through."

"Overall, I am impressed with the text. Specifically, I think that the topics would be of interest to both faculty and students. Moreover, the author does a nice job covering the requisite academic areas and discussing some issues not typically covered in a psychology of aging text. I particularly liked the issues approach to the text."

very helpful textbook

I've been studying for a "psychology of aging" exam, & used Dr.Belsky's book to help with my studying: it proved to be of great help, especially because the whole book is written in a narrative, conversational way, which helps the reader. All the major developments in aging are contained in the book: historical, basic information on gerontology & geropsychology, lots of "life-span approach" information, & all that is needed to understand how the (relatively new) field of gerontology came to expand & become a field that is now growing at a quick pace.
There's also a lot of up-to-date information, all the new findings & ideas in the field, which help to see how gerontology has started to change the aging process: lots of these changes are described in the book, things like new ways of measuring cognitive skills, the emotional changes in the older population, & the dying process & how to help make it more humane. Needless to say, this textbook contains many "aging in process" vignettes, which graphically describe real problems & real situations of real people...there are also many figures & graphs, which help the student understand the research & put it in context. All in all, a very helpful textbook.

THE REVISED EDITION OF AN EXCELLENT GERONTOLOGY TEXTBOOK

Psychology professor Janet Belsky [also author of Experiencing the Lifespan] wrote in the Preface to this Second (1990) edition, "I wrote the first edition of this book to fill a gap. In the early 1980s there were no gerontology texts on the market that were psychologicallly oriented, that comprehensively examined both aging research and practice, and that were also clearly aimed at students new to the field. Today... it is still unique---the only textbook available that provides a full picture of the far-ranging contributions of both academic and applied psychology to later life. My goal is... to show how psychological research translates into practice." (Pg. v)

She notes early in the book, "This evolution of senior citizenhood as a genuine life-stage has resulted from a difference in the pattern of disease control. During the first half of this century, cures were developed for many acute or infectious diseases... their eradication allowed most people to live past youth. Since that time we have become better able to limit (but not cure) diseases that tend to strike in later life." (Pg. 8)

She states, "Another important fact about aging is that as we get older we are increasingly suceptible to disease. When physical changes experienced with advancing age occur to a moderate degree, they are called 'normal aging'... but... when these diseases become more pronounced or extreme they are labeled 'chronic diseases.' Furthermore, even when a physiological change does not shade directly into a given chronic illness, it weakens us and make us more suceptible to a variety of diseases." (Pg. 40)

She laments, "The tragedy of the Medicare system is that it covers only acute or curative care. Once care is labeled as custodial, chronic, or continual, Medicare will not pay." (Pg. 100) She adds, "Research on what goes on behind the walls of long-term care facilities is just as disturbing... Unfortunately, this lack of attention seems predictable given the attitudes many nursing home personnel bring to their work ... These studies suggest that every grim idea we have about nursing homes is right. However... Because of continuing efforts to improve the quality of long-term care, the nursing home of the 1990s may really be a less malignant, more humane place. And... before we blame the nursing home industry for providing substandard care, we should look at ... the people that industry serves. It may be that residents themselves partly shape the care they are given." (Pg. 109)

She observes, "State and county hospitals are places of last resort in the mental health system, serving chronic, severely disturbed, often impoverished patients. The care provided in these institutions is often custodial. Residents are simply housed, fed, and given medications... in these institutions, [they are] just 'warehoused.'" (Pg. 292)

This is an excellent, very wide-ranging and informative textbook---that can even be read outside of a class!

Very good book in very good condition.

This book was a required textbook for a psychology course. It is in very good condition. The information is very relevant for the psychology course that I had taken. I recommend this book for it has a lot of excellent material for the topics covered in the Psychology of Aging college course. In fact, this book also has a lot of relevant, beneficial information that I am now using for my assignments in my PSY Cognition college course.

About the Author
Now retired, Mark S. Homan served as Chair of the Social Services Department at Pima Community College, where he taught for over 30 years. In addition to these duties, Mark has served as adjunct faculty and guest lecturer for colleges, universities, and training consortia in the United States, Russia, and Sweden. A strong advocate of community empowerment, Mark has worked with diverse populations in urban, rural, and reservation communities on a broad range of issues and has developed and directed several human services programs. He is the past Chair of the international Association for Community Organization and Social Administration (ACOSA), a founding member of community organizations and agencies, and has served in executive leadership roles on numerous community boards and councils. He has conducted workshops and delivered presentations on various aspects of community building and community power. The recipient of numerous awards for teaching excellence and for work with communities, Mark is also the author of RULES OF THE GAME: LESSONS FROM THE FIELD OF COMMUNITY CHANGE, which is used both as a textbook and as a practical guide for community change agents.
