About the Author
Richard F. Gilberg has more than 40 years of computer science experience in industry and academia. His industrial experience includes the development of large application systems, database administration, system testing, and data administration. After leaving the industry, he joined De Anza College as a professor of computer science. In addition to this text, he has also co-authored several others including Computer Science: A Structured Approach Using C, Computer Science: A Structured Approach Using C++, and Data Structures: A Pseudocode Approach with C++.

Behrouz A. Forouzan has more than 32 years of electronics and computer science experience in industry and academia. His industry experience includes designing electronic systems. After leaving the industry, he joined De Anza College as a professor of computer science. A bad book!

I am an instructor and I have used this book for the data structure course based on the recommendation of the department. After a few weeks I decided to replace it by Horowitz's "Fundamentals of Data structures in C". Really Gilberg's book is too bad. It make the subject too complicated. For example, it explains "stack" in 60+ pages long chapter! Really it gives the reader the impression that stack is a complex subject. In a nutshell, avoid this book! Go for Horowitz's book. It is more concise and easier to read.

Avoid this disaster at all costs!

Don't be fooled by any of the positive and semi-positive reviews above, this book is half-baked, poorly detailed and in a number of exercises it is simply flat out wrong!
How I wish I could contact the authors directly. While I'm sure they meant well, the result is pedestrian at best. The prose reads fairly well and the diagrams are well-printed and attractive but once you dive in and start trying to work through the many exercises... you'll soon realize the authors didn't give you adequate information to complete them.
It is not uncommon for an exercise to refer to a method about which the authors have only described in 2-3 short sentences... and worse yet, the exercises frequently ask you to construct solutions based on a combination of methods; which would be great but nowhere in the book will you find even a single example to guide you along.
The publisher's web site does provide a download file of the source-code but you'll soon find that the code is so flawed it won't even compile or build (even using the compilers the authors reference). Books says based on C yet much of the code is C++.
Do yourself and your students a favor. Avoid this book at all costs. You'd enjoy using this book as much as a mechanic would enjoy a flawed and incomplete service manual.
Lest you think I a hyper-skilled software engineer, please note that my review is based on my experience as a computer science student (undergraduate) with a 3.4 GPA.

Could be better, but good enough

I do see a lot of negative reviews, but here is my take. When you want to learn data structures, C is the worst language to learn it. The reason is you need to think a lot harder to understand how your program works. However, it is the best strategy to sharpen your thinking skills. This is a very good book to learn how to create data structures in C. I am not sure why it is used in a college curriculum. May be to make the students do some hard thinking and hence be better programmers in the field?
For me, I am a professional programmer and I have done enough programming in C. I wanted to brush up my algorithm knowledge and also indulge in some good old C programming. Teaching data structures through C is a hard thing to do and I appreciate the authors making an attempt. The way I went through the book is slowly and I worked out all the programs. The code looks good to me, obviously the authors are bit biased towards using C++ idioms. it is not that bad. To learn algorithms, what other choice you have? You need to get with the Sedgewick books. The latest version is in Java, but it is very hard to read through it. There are many other books that take a pseudo-code only approach. So I would recommend this to any one who has little bit more time and are familiar with programming. For beginners, this may not be the right book, if you want to catch up fast.

About the Author
Bruce L. Bowerman is a professor of decision sciences at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. He received his Ph.D. in statistics from Iowa State University in 1974 and has over 32 years of experience teaching basic statistics, regression analysis, time series forecasting, and design of experiments to both undergraduate and graduate students. In 1987 Professor Bowerman received an Outstanding Teaching award from the Miami University senior class, and in 1992 he received the Effective Educator award from the Richard T. Farmer School of Business Administration. Together with Richard T. O¿Connell, Professor Bowerman has written ten textbooks. In addition to the earlier editions of this forecasting textbook, these textbooks include BUSINESS STATISTICS IN PRACTICE and LINEAR STATISTICAL MODELS: AN APPLIED APPROACH. The first edition of FORTECASTING AND TIME SERIES earned an Outstanding Academic Book award from CHOICE magazine. Professor Bowerman has also published a number of articles in applied stochastic processes, time series forecasting, and statistical education.

Richard T. O¿Connell is an associate professor of decision sciences at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. He has more than 27 years of experience teaching basic statistics, statistical quality control and process improvement, regression analysis, time series analysis, and design of experiments to both undergraduate and graduate business students. He also has extensive consulting experience and has taught workshops dealing with statistical quality control and process improvement for a variety of companies in the Midwest. In 2000 Professor O¿Connell received an Effective Educator award from the Richard T. Farmer School of Business Administration. Together with Bruce L. Bowerman he has written ten textbooks. In addition to the earlier editions of this forecasting textbook, these textbooks include BUSINESS STATISTICS IN PRACTICE and LINEAR STATISTICAL MODELS: AN APPLIED APPROACH. Professor O¿Connell has published numerous articles in the area of innovative statistical education and statistical quality control. He is one of the first college instructors in the United States to integrate statistical process control and process improvement methodology into his basic business statistics course. Professor O¿Connell received an M.S. degree in decision sciences from Northwestern University in 1973, and he is currently a member of both the Decision Sciences Institute and the American Statistical Association.

Anne B. Koehler is a professor of decision sciences and the George and Mildred Panuska Professor of Business Administration at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. She received a Ph.D. in mathematics in 1968 from Indiana University. Her interest in forecasting began with an internship at the J.M. Smucker Company in 1980. Professor Koehler began teaching statistics in 1975 and forecasting in 1990. She teaches courses in basic statistics, regression analysis, time series forecasting, and survey sampling. She is co-author of a paper in the JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN STATISTICAL SOCIETY (1997) that presented a state space model for the Holt-Winters multiplicative model and provided that method with a sound statistical basis. Professor Koehler has numerous publications, many of which are on forecasting with seasonal models and exponential smoothing methods. She is an associate editor for the INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF FORECASTING, and for many years was the editor of the software reviews for that journal. She served on the Board of Directors of the International Institute of Forecasters for 10 years. She is also as associate editor for DECISION SCIENCES and has twice served on the Board of Directors of the Decision Sciences Institute.

Easiest academic book on TS I've ever read

I believe this book is easier to read than Brockwell's, but it doesn't go as deep into the subject. It's a great book for an introductory semester.

No Theory

This book was required for a Time Series Course. I would not recommend it if you can avoid it. There is no theory in this book. The book's answer to time series analysis is put the data in the software and read the output. Don't expect any real understanding of time series.

Nice applied text

I like the fact that the authors cover a wide array of topics including descriptive and inferential statistics, regression, forecasting, and time series. Having said that, the section on ARIMA modeling is a light in terms of building a strong understanding on time series analysis (I think the rest of the sections do well in this area, especially from an applied perspective). This is great for a graduate or undergraduate student interested in learning some of the basics before more advanced study.

A good introduction, good reference

This is one of the most readable mathematical statistics textbooks. The level of math used is just right for this course. You need to use is mostly univariate calculus, but partial derivatives may pop up in a few places. You also need to know matrix algebra to read most of the chapter on linear models. All derivations and explanations are clear. The statistics portion of the text starts with sampling theory. In fact, it has more on sampling than I personally wanted to learn, such as sampling from finite populations and stratified sampling. Then it continues with estimation methods and hypothesis testing. There is a very good chapter on descriptive statistics. The later chapters focus on specific models, such as comparing the means of two samples, analysis of variance, categorical analysis, and finally the linear regression. The first chapters summarize probability theory, so the text is very much self-contained even for those with no probability background. There is also a chapter on Bayesian methods, which I haven't read.

The two features that I personally like in this text is that for some models the author presents such modern and sophisticated topics like non-parametric statistical techniques and bootstrap methods for obtaining standard errors. Overall, this is a fine textbook. It gives a solid introduction to statistics for people who need to do statistical analysis on their own and for whom this is their first and last statistics course. This text also gives a nice introduction for students of statistics who plan to move onto more advanced texts. There are one or two places where the derivation is simple but gets a little daunting (I think one of them is one of Wilcoxon's tests). But in the end, you must accept one fact. This is a serious university level applied math text for sophomores/juniors. This book can't be read like a novel, though it is a very readable text as far as mathematical stats goes.

Ignore most of those negative comments from readers many of whom clearly have not mastered their calculus and probability skills before taking a stats course. Undergraduate mathematical statistics is a kind of a course that attracts lots of people from many different majors and math backgrounds. Some take stats only because they have to, not because they want to. In the end, (this may sound arrogant), but the quality and motivation of students in an undergraduate mathematical statistics courses may be very variable. Some probably do not belong in a serious stats course. Hence, the flood of negative reviews for this text.

Outstanding: undoubtedly the best text written at this level

This book is an introductory-level statistics textbook for people who are learning statistics for the first time, and who know some math but are not math wizards.

I am outright shocked at the low reviews given to this book. I tend to be highly critical of statistics textbooks, especially ones at this level. In my opinion, this book does an outstanding job. It balances making the material accessible with going into considerable depth, and it integrates mathematical theory with an emphasis on data analysis. The title of this book says it all: "Mathematical Statistics and Data Analysis". There are few other books that emphasize both theory and practice. This book certainly lives up to its title in this respect.

Perhaps some of the bad reviews are from frustrated students who are in classes that are moving too quickly for their level. Just because this is an excellent book doesn't mean that every professor will use it in an appropriate way. The exercises in this book can be tough and I think it would be possible to easily overwhelm students by assigning too many problems or problems that are too difficult. This book is only really useful if you are able to explore it at a slower pace, reading it and reflecting on it.

This book is not concise but it is not overly wordy. Rice is an excellent writer. The expanded discussion communicates aspects of the subject that are often overlooked, and helps build the students' intuition. This book is always readable and it is clearly written to be read and understood. In addition to communicating basic concepts, the book also explores numerous practical and philosophical considerations. For a book at such an introductory level, this text is remarkably deep.

One of the most attractive aspects of this book is that it is relatively easy to skip around in it. More advanced students or students with some exposure to probability will necessarily want to skip many of the early chapters. Unlike some of the more advanced texts (such as the Casella and Berger) where the chapters depend on and reference each other in a rather rigid fashion, this book is more flexible and thus can appeal to students with diverse backgrounds.

My last bit of praise is the integration of data analysis with mathematical theory. Distributions are introduced with a rich discussion of where, how, and why they arise in practice. Data analysis techniques, tests, and abstract definitions alike are introduced in such a way that they are rooted both to the abstract theory and to consideration of applications: this book is one of the rare texts that fully bridges the gap between the real world and the abstract models used to describe it.

I would recommend this book for a wide variety of different uses. This would make an outstanding textbook and it could easily be used for more than one course, or for courses at more than one level. It is a useful book to have on the shelf as a basic reference, and it is also very useful for self-study. My only complaint is that more books in the field of statistics are not written in the spirit and style of this one. In particular, I would like to see authors of more advanced books examine this book's strengths and use them to enhance their own writing. Or perhaps John Rice ought to try his hand at writing a higher-level text; I know I would be eager to see what he could produce!

Not for everyone

I work in a large corporation in a technical job. My primary motivation for buying this text book was to apply statistics to practical work-related problems. I loved this book.

I was also amazed to see all the negative reviews. My theory for the negative reviews is that many students have no conception what a real world application of statistics is all about. They think that if they get a job in industry; the statistics problems they encounter involves nothing beyond picking up their favorite statistics book, finding an exact solved example of the problem in the text, copy the formual from the example and then plug in some numbers and you are done!

Book for beginning college students.

Prospective readers/orderers should know that this is a workbook for beginning college students, with information about such things as how to decide what to wear, how to pay your tuition fees on time, how to budget your time, etc. It is VERY basic (even for college students), and contains VERY little valid information about the brain. Not much there for the high price.

waste of money
By just another statistic
Only the questions with answers in text have solutions. Solutions not complete enough to help if you are having trouble with the concept. Very disappointing, big waste of money. Useless. Wish I could return it

About the Author
Robert T. Clemen is Professor at the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University. He has been an active contributor to the field of decision analysis since earning his Ph.D. at Indiana University in 1984 and is an authority in the use of expert information in decision and risk analysis. He has interests in applying decision analysis in the areas of energy use and corporate sustainabiligy. Aside from his research interests, Bob has a strong focus on making decision analysis understandable to all students at all levels, ranging from high school students to executives.

The best available intro to normative decision analysis

This is the best book available today for individuals interested in an introduction to normative (as opposed to descriptive) decision analysis. Although it's accessible to readers with minimal mathematical training, it is also very satisfactory for those with more mathematical sophistication, and I use it regularly as a reference in my own professional work. Clear explanations, excellent problems and exercises, and very well-organized. I highly recommend it.

A clear, accessible introduction to an important field.

This is a very accessible book. My classes routinely commend it. It begins by emphasizing the importance of clearly distinguishing between values, decisions and facts. It discusses the need to clarify one's values and then determine the decisions and facts that are relevant. It then discusses sensitivity analysis techniques for identifying which facts are crucial to your analysis. It discusses techniques for deciding when to gather further information. Studying for an MBA - buy this book

A perfect balance for those with mathematical expertise and those without - this book provides a well written and comprehensive view of decision making. Lots of easy to understand and relevant case studies - complete with answers.
I needed to get on top of this subject for my MBA course and, although there is a lot to this subject, in one book there is everything one could possibly need to know.
For corporate decision makers needing to get on top of the subject, this book provides a detailed enough insight to the subject to get started straight away. Its strength is that it is not trying to sell a Microsoft Excel add-in - in fact, it shows how to do without Excel add-ins (although these do make the job a lot easier).

About the Author
Mark Costanzo is Professor of Psychology and co-director of the Center for Applied Psychological Research at Claremont McKenna College. He has published research on a variety of law-related topics including jury decision-making, sexual harassment, attorney argumentation, alternative dispute resolution, and the death penalty. He is author of JUST REVENGE: COSTS AND CONSEQUENCES OF THE DEATH PENALTY (St. Martin's Press,1997) and co-editor (with Stuart Oskamp) of VIOLENCE AND THE LAW (Sage Publications, 1994). Professor Costanzo has served as an expert witness and has appeared on national radio and television programs to discuss the applications of psychological science to the legal system. He serves on the editorial board of Law and Human Behavior and is co-organizer of the annual Claremont Symposium on Applied Psychology.

Dr. Faires has won many awards, including Outstanding College-University Teacher of Mathematics, Ohio Section of MAA (1996) and Youngstown State University, Distinguished Professor for Teaching (1995-1996).

Richard L. Burden is Emeritus Professor of Mathematics at Youngstown State University. His master's degree in mathematics and doctoral degree in mathematics, with a specialization in numerical analysis, were both awarded by Case Western Reserve University. He also earned a masters degree in computer science from the University of Pittsburgh. His mathematical interests include numerical analysis, numerical linear algebra, and mathematical statistics. Dr. Burden has been named a distinguished professor for teaching and service three times at Youngstown State University. He was also named a distinguished chair as the chair of the Department of Mathematical and Computer Sciences. He wrote the Actuarial Examinations in Numerical Analysis from 1990 until 1999.

Affiliation: University of California, San Diego and Northeastern University Bio: Dr. John Proakis is an Adjunct Professor at the University of California at San Diego and a Professor Emeritus at Northeastern University. He was a faculty member at Northeastern University from 1969 through 1998 and held several academic positions including Professor of Electrical Engineering, Associate Dean of the College of Engineering and Director of the Graduate School of Engineering, and Chairman of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. His professional experience and interests focus in areas of digital communications and digital signal processing. He is co-author of several successful books, including DIGITAL COMMUNICATIONS, 5E (2008), INTRODUCTION TO DIGITAL SIGNAL PROCESSING, 4E (2007); DIGITAL SIGNAL PROCESSING LABORATORY (1991); ADVANCED DIGITAL SIGNAL PROCESSING (1992); DIGITAL PROCESSING OF SPEECH SIGNALS (2000); COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS ENGINEERING, 2E (2002); DIGITAL SIGNAL PROCESSING USING MATLAB V.4, 3E (2010); CONTEMPORARY COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS USING MATLAB, 2E (2004); ALGORITHMS FOR STATISTICAL SIGNAL PROCESSING (2002); FUNDAMENTALS OF COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS (2005).

Masoud Salehi received BS from Tehran University and MS and PhD from Stanford University, all in Electrical Engineering. Before joining Northeastern University, he was with the Electrical Engineering Departments at Isfahan University of Technology and Tehran University both in Iran. During 1988-1989 he was a visiting professor at the Information and Communication Theory Research Group, Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands, where he did research in network information theory and coding for storage media. In 1989 he joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Northeastern University. Dr. Salehi is the coauthor of the textbooks "Communication Systems Engineering", "Communication Systems with MATLAB", "Fundamentals of Communication Systems", and "Digital Communications". His main areas of research interest include information theory and coding.

Gerhard Bauch received the Dipl.-Ing. and Dr.-Ing. degree in Electrical Engineering from Munich University of Technology (TUM) in 1995 and 2001, respectively, and the Diplom-Volkswirt degree from FernUniversitaet Hagen in 2001. In 1996, he was with the German Aerospace Center (DLR), Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany. From 1996-2001 he was member of scientific staff at Munich University of Technology (TUM). In 1998 and 1999 he was visiting researcher at AT&T Labs Research, Florham Park, NJ, USA. In 2002 he joined DoCoMo Euro-Labs, Munich, Germany, where he has been managing the Advanced Radio Transmission Group. In 2007 he was additionally appointed Research Fellow of DoCoMo Euro-Labs. From 2003-2008 he was an adjunct professor at Munich University of Technology. In 2007 he was a visiting professor teaching courses at the University of Udine in Italy and at the Alpen-Adria-University Klagenfurt in Austria. Since February 2009 he has been a full professor at the Universität der Bundeswehr Munich.

Not something I reach for as often...

This is one of those books that can be useful, but only in a limited way. In particular, I am biased towards books that not only instruct but can serve as future reference, and this book leaves you wanting in that area.

First, the positives. This book guides you step by step, enabling more capabilities as you go along. It is moderately paced and touches many essential topics in communications. Problems and solutions are clearly presented.

There are some negatives, however. The communication systems are not that "contemporary." For example, key technologies such as OFDM are treated very sparingly. Furthermore, some of the Matlab code is not as useful as it seems at first sight.

If you are a student wishing to learn some basic fundamentals in communications while testing out the theory in Matlab, then this book can certainly be useful. If you want a good treatment of more contemporary systems such as OFDM, then this book is not for you. You can get some useful information initially, but the book's value as a reference is limited. Soon you may find yourself like me and not be reaching for it that much.

Hands-on learning resource, excellent updates

This book is not meant to be a complete communications reference, but instead delivers some great hands-on exercises to accompany a standard comms text. The authors state in the preface "The objective of this book is to serve as a companion or supplement to any of the comprehensive textbooks in communications systems"

This book provides three entirely new chapters: "Multicarrier Modulation and OFDM" (chapter 8), "Transmission Through Wireless Channels" (chapter 9), and "Multiple Antenna Systems"(chapter 11). Chapter 9 is a great overall addition to the book because it really rounds out the building blocks that the authors provide for modeling and simulation of communications systems. 8 and 9 cover OFDM and MIMO, specific techniques that are becoming very prevalent in modern standards such as LTE, 802.11, DVB-T2 and 802.16. Another significant update is the sections on LDPC and turbocodes in chapter 10 ("Capacity and Coding").

This book gives very brief technical overview and then dives straight into the source code. The authors give the readers great building blocks to implement their own models and expect that the readers will consult their favorite texts for more technical detail.
