Wonderful conceptual view of the role of statistics

I purchased this book to review it for a high school class in introductory statistics for enriched math students. Often mathematical subjects are criticized because they place emphasis on individual concepts, and the student doesn't learn what the concepts for used for until the end of the chapter or unit. This book places an emphasis on the research process and the role statistics plays. It is not a rigorous course in anaylsis, but better than that, it gives the newbie to statistics an understanding of the purpose of statistics. It uses cognitive strategies of elaboration and discourse to bring meaning to an otherwise abstract subject. If you plan to use this to teach, get the instructor's manual from the publisher. It has nice suggestions. Also, this is book is becoming widely used, so you may be able to find web sites where other instructors have posted ancillary readings and activities.

Begins Well But Ends Poorly

This book consists of 26 chapters divided into four parts. Part One, Finding Data in Life, provides most of the necessary tools for the reader to become a skeptical consumer of statistics. In it, chapter six, Getting the Big Picture, provides the reader with a seven step method for evaluating statistics-laden news articles is sufficient for the development of a healthy skepticism of numbers in the news. Part Two, Finding Life in Data, provides some of the simpler, more common tools that the reader can use, albeit under limited conditions, in order to appropriately interpret statistics quoted by the media. Unfortunately, I noticed that the author used none of these important tools in the examples she provides in Part Four of the text. Part Three, Understanding Uncertainty in Life, imparts the fundamentals of probability theory, and addresses most of the more popular and common uses and abuses of probability. Part Four, Making Judgments from Surveys and Experiments, attempts to develop within the reader a functional understanding of confidence intervals, hypothesis testing and statistical significance, with less than acceptable results.

One very good point of the text is its discussion of the difficulties and disasters associated with defining and measuring characteristics of interest, obtaining good survey and experimental samples, conducting observational and experimental studies, and establishing cause and effect relationships. Another good point about the text is its presentation of confidence intervals for sample means and proportions, and its discussion of the limitations of statistical inference (moving from samples to conclusions about populations). One minor flaw of the text is its use of approximate, or back-of-the-envelope statistical calculations which are only valid with bell-shaped samples each consisting of at least one hundred observations. However, more exact calculations would require a statistics text complete with t-tables, and is beyond the scope of a text directed at promoting a more general statistical literacy.

Two main problems exist with the text. The first is that it does not stress the importance of going to the source of a quoted statistic. Newspaper articles and TV news items often make compelling cases, but by themselves do not provide conclusive evidence for or against anything of interest. The statistics making the news may have been incorrectly quoted, or more commonly, taken out of their proper context. Only by going to the source can you determine the trustworthiness of the statistic, as this will tell you conclusively whether or not the study adhered to good statistical practice, and most important, whether or not the conclusions made by (or in many cases, implied by) the study are indeed justified. Folks often resort to the use of statistics to prove a point, support a position, or more typically, to get or otherwise encourage the reader to do something that may or may not be in his or her best interests. We often see statistics used to support claims or positions in the health and medical science reporting, as well as in economic and financial reporting. More often than not, what makes it into print for popular public consumption is the sensational, the eye-catching- in other words, only the juiciest numerical morsels make it to print. One small, fast read that explores this particular aspect of numbers in the news is Joel Best's Damned Lies and Statistics.

The second problem is the author's inability to bring together all of the concepts presented in the book in a meaningful way, which can best be demonstrated by an example taken from Part Four of the text. On pages 409-410, Utts argues that an important, but not statistically significant, gender-based salary difference exists among faculty at the school where she teaches, even when seniority levels and department and/or college affiliation is taken into account. Although she disclosed the p-value (0.08) and provided the average difference and sample sizes for one college at her university, any reader who paid close attention to the concepts and lessons presented in the text would notice several problems with this particular example. Utts tells the reader that a regression equation was used to predict female salaries based on knowledge of male salaries, which are then compared to actual female salaries; however, Utts provided neither the scatterplot of the data nor the r-value, both of which would have told the reader the strength of the association between seniority level and pay (as well as the goodness of fit, as there may well be one or two outliers; after all, this is salary data). Nor did she provide the standard deviations so that t-statistics could be calculated and thus allow the reader to make the judgment of `importance' for his or herself. Essentially, Utts gives the reader just enough information to support her position (she seeks to explicitly imply that gender-based pay differences exist at her university), but not enough to confirm or refute her position. Thus, the author behaves in the same way as those axe-grinding individuals that she encourages the reader to be skeptical of.

Closer inspection of this example also reveals a more glaring problem that only a detailed knowledge of the subject matter would impart. For potential users of this book, I provide a couple of interesting insights into this example. First, Utts did not properly define what she meant by salary (was it simply and solely what the faculty received in pay directly from the university, or did it include other sources of income, as professors tend to get other income, such as honorariums- a kind of fee for reviewing grant proposals or serving on editorial boards of journals or even as advisors on government boards and committees, consulting fees and in the case of the author of this text, royalties on all textbooks sold), and second, Utts failed to provide information on the way that salary decisions are made on the campus. This latter point is most interesting, as faculty pay is based on a formula having many factors (seniority being one of them), with each factor carrying different weights. Moreover, formulas differ based on function served or role played, such as teaching and research as opposed to administrative tasks. By way of example, faculty involved in research could earn more than those involved in administration (especially at her college, as it is part of a research-oriented university system), and faculty that emphasize teaching and writing of textbooks (like the author, Utts) would find themselves at a disadvantage to others who emphasized scholarly publications because journal articles get more weight than textbook authorship. In essence, there could well be many reasons for the difference in pay besides gender (which may well be a contributing factor), and I found it not only odd that Utts did not investigate male and female faculty engaged in similar types of work (for example, both teaching faculty or both involved in administration) and then look for differences in pay, but also that the lessons learned in Parts One and Two of this text were not invoked. This, and a few other glaring instances of axe-grinding throughout the text (apparently, the author is a researcher of paranormal phenomena; thus many examples in support of claims of ESP and UFOs find their way into the text) make the text unsuitable as a teaching tool.

In sum, although the book is adequate for courses devoted to satisfying general education requirements, better books pitched at the target audience exist. Two of the more accessible texts on the same subject matter are A J Jaffee's Misused Statistics and David S. Moore's Statistics: Concepts and Controversies. A third text, Statistics by A. Adhikari and R. Pisani also covers the same ground but in a more modular fashion (smaller, bite-sized chapters) and in greater depth, with slightly more mathematical computation and manipulation than most general education requirement students would probably like. All three texts emphasize the importance of taking into account information outside of that presented to the reader and admonish the reader not to jump to conclusions based on `naked' statistics (those divorced from their original context) or otherwise incomplete statistical information. Those looking to obtain satisfactory statistical literacy in a (mathematically) painless fashion would do well to pick up any edition of Moore's Statistics: Concepts and Controversies, and skip this flawed and biased text.

Good, solid foundational book!

Hi...I used this book in an upper division math course at the University of New Mexico and loved it. It is a good book for people who need to understand and use statistics but who don't have a mathematics/statistics degree. The book emphasizes data collection techniques as well as methods of statistical calculation and ample examples are given for every topic in order to make concepts more concrete. I currently use this book as a quick reference guide and, as long as I'm not needing a rigorous development of a concept, it is perfect!

A quality textbook

I began using 'Major European Governments' when it was in its 6th edition, in 1982, written by Alex Dragnich and Jorgen Rasmussen. The latest edition I have is its 9th edition, with Dragnich no longer sharing the authorship, and Joel Moses as contributor. This is an expensive book, generally used as a textbook for undergraduate courses on Comparative Politics or European Politics. Dragnich was primarily responsible for the part on the Soviet Union; as Dragnich was an emeritus professor even back in 1982, and the Soviet Union no longer exists, the evolution of this book, begun by Dragnich, is such that it is now almost exclusively Rasmussen's work.
Rather like the philosophical puzzle -- if you replace a plank in a ship, is it the same ship? Replace another plank -- still the same ship? And another, and another; if you have replaced each plank in succession and still called it the same ship, at what point does it become a different ship? Particularly if you then take the removed planks and build another ship. But, you're asking, what has this to do with Major European Governments?
Well, I'm glad you asked.
Just as this book has become both a different book, yet remained the same book, so do have the governments in Europe changed, and yet remained the same. As I examine the variations in the sections on the United Kingdom, France, and Germany, I notice that the basic structures of these governments have remained the same, and those that have changed are very much like the removed-planks of the ship described above. For instance, the political party structure of Britain remains fairly constant, as does the overall political activity of the population and the foundations of government in Parliament, civil service, blended executive and judicial functions, all without a written constitution (in the American sense, anyway).
The same is true for France and Germany, although Germany has had to integrate new populations and institutions with the rejoining of East and West Germanies. The section on Prospects for European Democracy/Unity still addresses the same questions, with more current history and structures, to be sure.
But then, one doesn't expect the average undergraduate to retain the detail on the level of how many Members of Parliament are there in the British House of Commons? What is the appeal procedure of judicial review in France? What specific ordinances have had to be modified to allow an integration of economies from East and West Germany? When teaching this subject, I do give detail, but I strive for the broader history, philosophy, and sociology of politics to come through, because I am aware that if anything has a chance of surviving, that will be it.
The section on Russia/Commonwealth of Independent States/former Soviet Union is the one that has undergone the most radical transformation over time in these editions. Of course, much of the political discussion in the older editions amounted to learned speculation, given the closed nature of Soviet society generally, and Soviet politics particularly. The professors would never admit this to undergraduates, of course -- why give them license to doubt further what was being taught? Of course, the discussion of the current (or, in the 9th edition, current as of 1994) situation in Russia looks very much like our replanked ship -- much has changed, and much remains the same. Much works no better than it did before, but is simply more open about it. Other things are still shrouded in mystery. So, the ship is still floating in its mystic manner...
Alas, this is one of those books that is destined to only be glanced over, and sold back to the bookstores at the end of term (and, with the list price of [$$], who can blame the students). But, I would that more people would read and retain this book; it is a very well-written, clearly-laid-out discussion of the major governmental systems in Europe. It is important for people in a democracy to see how other democracies are governed. It is important for those not under a democracy to understand the variations. It is important for everyone, I believe, to know a bit more about the wider world, which was my original impulse to learn (and then to teach) politics.
I shall get off my soapbox now...

Edward S. Neukrug is the former Chair of the Department of Educational Leadership and Counseling and currently Professor of Counseling and Human Services at Old Dominion University, Dr. Edward S. Neukrug has taught counselor education and human services for over thirty years. In addition, he has worked as a substance abuse counselor, a counselor at a crisis center, an outpatient therapist at a mental health center, an associate school psychologist, a school counselor, and as a private practice psychologist and licensed professional counselor. Dr. Neukrug has written dozens of articles and chapters in books, has authored eight books, and was the editor of THE SAGE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF THEORY IN COUNSELING AND PSYCHOTHERAPY. About the Author
Thomas L. Rost is a professor of plant biology at the University of California, Davis and is currently the Executive Associate Dean there in the Division of Biological Sciences. He received his B.S. in biology from St. John's University, his M.A. in biology from Mankato State University, and his Ph.D. in botany from Iowa State University. He has taught developmental plant anatomy for almost 30 years. His primary research interests include the structure and development of roots in vascular plants and structural aspects of Pierce's disease in grape vines.

Michael Barbour is a plant ecologist in the Environmental Horticulture Department at the University of California, Davis. His research blends ecophysiology, population biology, and vegetation science. His current research projects include a state-wide survey of vernal pool vegetation in California for conservation purposes, a search for vegetation and soil traits that define "old-growth" status for montane mixed conifer forest and a continuum of values for those traits that correlate with successional distance from old-growth status, and a reconstruction of pre-contact old-growth Californian mixed conifer forest. These projects have been supported by the USDA Forest Service, the National Science Foundation, the Packard Foundation, the California Department of Fish and Game, and the California Department of Transportation.

Ralph Stocking received his degrees in plant nutrition and plant physiology from University of California, Berkeley and University of California, Davis. His research background concerns water relations of plants, photosynthesis, and chloroplast structure and development, on which subjects he has published over 80 scientific papers. He has also been a coauthor of nine editions of the UC Davis series of botany/plant biology books.

Terence Murphy is a professor of plant biology at the University of California, Davis. He received his Ph.D. from the University of California, San Diego in cell biology, and has taught courses in introductory biology, plant physiology, and plant molecular biology. His research areas include the effects of stress on plant cells, particularly on DNA, membrane transport, and oxygen metabolism. Terence Murphy has over 30 years of experience teaching introductory biology courses.

Simple read, informative

This book is written in a very clear style so that students of all ages can understand it. I used this book for a college level plant biology class, but I could see people using it as early as middle school for an introduction to botany. It may not be worth the price if you're just buying the book for leisure reading, but remember that you're paying for a textbook.

Its literally biology growing in a book

Everything is in the book, the price is right, but the book was not well taken care of. It looks like someone spilled (red Kool-aid) on the book, and some mold started to grow in the back pages. Funny, a "plant biology" book with mold growing in the pages, how literal is that, I bet the book companies never thought of doing that for a new type of learning experience.

This book was exactly as I expected, slight use but in perfect condition. The price was very affordable as the bookstore at my college wanted $350.00 for it, I got it way cheaper through here.

"Prior to the adoption of this book (PHYSICS FOR SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS, 5th edition), the textbook was FUNDAMENTALS OF PHYSICS by Halliday and Resnick. Although Halliday and Resnick's book was the textbook chosen by the Physics Department, many students were observed by the faculty to be studying from Serway's book. The students had acquired old used versions of the Serway book, and they were actively studying out of this book rather than the prescribed textbook. Serway's book became our students' popular choice. The Physics Department, recognizing this, adopted a "give them what they want" attitude, and accordingly Serway's book was made the textbook for the calculus-based undergraduate physics course."

"Some of the general things I look for are the end-of-chapter questions and problems, and the quality of explanations. Feedback from students is also important--past students have given Serway more favorable reviews...another reason we went with Serway this semester."

About the Author
Raymond A. Serway received his doctorate at Illinois Institute of Technology and is Professor Emeritus at James Madison University. In 2011, he was awarded an honorary doctorate degree from his alma mater, Utica College. He received the 1990 Madison Scholar Award at James Madison University, where he taught for 17 years. Dr. Serway began his teaching career at Clarkson University, where he conducted research and taught from 1967 to 1980. He was the recipient of the Distinguished Teaching Award at Clarkson University in 1977 and the Alumni Achievement Award from Utica College in 1985. As Guest Scientist at the IBM Research Laboratory in Zurich, Switzerland, he worked with K. Alex Müller, 1987 Nobel Prize recipient. Dr. Serway also was a visiting scientist at Argonne National Laboratory, where he collaborated with his mentor and friend, the late Sam Marshall. In addition to PHYSICS FOR SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS, Dr. Serway is the coauthor of PRINCIPLES OF PHYSICS, Fifth Edition; COLLEGE PHYSICS, Ninth Edition; ESSENTIALS OF COLLEGE PHYSICS; MODERN PHYSICS, Third Edition; and the high school textbook PHYSICS, published by Holt McDougal. In addition, Dr. Serway has published more than 40 research papers in the field of condensed matter physics and has given more than 60 presentations at professional meetings. Dr. Serway and his wife Elizabeth enjoy traveling, playing golf, fishing, gardening, singing in the church choir, and especially spending quality time with their four children, nine grandchildren, and a recent great-grandson.

John W. Jewett, Jr., earned his undergraduate degree in physics at Drexel University and his doctorate at Ohio State University, specializing in optical and magnetic properties of condensed matter. Dr. Jewett began his academic career at Richard Stockton College of New Jersey, where he taught from 1974 to 1984. He is currently Emeritus Professor of Physics at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. Through his teaching career, Dr. Jewett has been active in promoting science education. In addition to receiving four National Science Foundation grants, he helped found and direct the Southern California Area Modern Physics Institute (SCAMPI) and Science IMPACT (Institute for Modern Pedagogy and Creative Teaching). Dr. Jewett's honors include the Stockton Merit Award at Richard Stockton College in 1980, selection as Outstanding Professor at California State Polytechnic University for 1991-1992, and the Excellence in Undergraduate Physics Teaching Award from the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) in 1998. In 2010, he received an Alumni Lifetime Achievement Award from Drexel University in recognition of his contributions in physics education. He has given over 100 presentations both domestically and abroad, including multiple presentations at national meetings of the AAPT. Dr. Jewett is the author of THE WORLD OF PHYSICS: MYSTERIES, MAGIC, AND MYTH, which provides many connections between physics and everyday experiences. In addition to his work on PHYSICS FOR SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS, he is the coauthor for PRINCIPLES OF PHYSICS, Fifth Edition, as well as GLOBAL ISSUES, a four-volume set of instruction manuals in integrated science for high school. Dr. Jewett enjoys playing keyboard with his all-physicist band, traveling, and collecting antique quack medical devices that can be used as demonstration apparatus in physics lectures. Good introductory text

This was the required text for a course I TAed. I found the text useful for preparing my own lectures, as it often reminded me of ideas I would have 'taken for granted' among my students, although I found derivations often uncompelling and examples often glossing over subtle points. Also, examples and homework problems seemed predominantly to explore only straightforward applications of course concepts. I imagine, however, that many students at this level (freshmen bio, geo, and non-science majors) would prefer this kind of treatment, which is why, considering also this text's clarity and simplicity of presentation, I gave the above four star rating.
Students who consider themselves more analytically inclined would be wise to consult instead Purcell. In fewer words Purcell describes E&M more clearly and more completely, with interesting examples and homework problems which evoke a fuller understanding of the theory.

Verbose and not precise writing

When Serway and Jewett confuse me, I read an older Physics book that I have. For an expensive scientific textbook, I would expect less ambiguous writing. Perhaps I am too critical when reading.

A quick example in chapter 20: " . . .we explore more details about heat as a means of energy transfer and consider two other transfer methods that are often related to temperature changes - convection ( a form of matter transfer) and electromagnetic radiation." At first, I thought convection and radiation might be another form of energy transfer that is not heat nor work. I really don't know what they are trying to say. Latter in the section they say radiation is the transfer of energy.

I waste hours in each chapter trying to decipher the ambiguity. Also, The mixture of text with resolving equations is tedious. I would rather have the concepts explained and then have the equations derived. I would rather spend less money and receive less color printing. Most of the color pictures are a waste of space; I think about all of the superfluous pictures and verbose text whenever I lift this heavy book. On the plus side, the quick quizzes are helpful. I bookmark the answer page and check my progress of understanding as I read the chapter.

Mixed Reception

This book has its ups and downs.

Like another reviewer mentioned, this book is very verbose and unnecessarily full of pictures that are not helpful.

Concepts are often very poorly worded. Just because I'm an EE undergrad doesn't mean I like to decipher sentences that appear to be paragraphs at first glance. After 4 commas, two dashes, and a colon, I no longer have any interest in net-torque on a cylinder. A subtitle of "for scientists and engineers" is not an excuse to write in indecipherable technical terms.

There are easier ways to explain things.

Ultimately, I think this book fails for the same reason most physics books and professors fail: it is written by and for people with a natural gift for physics. For the other 98% of the world, it might as well be greek.

While a thorough reference and good guide for physically-inclined folk, this is a very difficult book for first year undergrads to use.

I would opt for a different textbook if I had the chance.

Good student text

The authors give a nice presentation of theory involved in recrystallization, distillation, chromatography, and extraction. The writing style is academic, but friendly enough to keep you interested. I found it great to read before doing the scheduled experiments in O-Chem lab. However, this is a very "student"-ish text and I seriously doubt professionals would find it useful, unless you're looking for a refresher course in the basic techniques. The labs I took had a significant amount of NMR involved; not much discussion in this text about that. The problems provided are usually good, but there are no answers given. I'd also recommend "Principles and Techniques in an Integrated Chem Laboratory" by Aikens, Bailey, et al.

Dare I say the lab bible?

So far so good. It really breaks down the labs well. I have been out of a chem lab for many years and now jumping back into Orgo (I'm not crazy I swear), this really helps me understand what's going on. It gives pointers and trouble shooting tips. It really is a must have for the techniques in lab. I haven't had to Google/YouTube anything after reading this book for techniques. That in itself is why the star rating.

One con-- there are end of section questions but no answers... they certainly know how to leave a girl hangin'...
