[Nairne] presents a very fresh and exciting perspective! It should help students see the relevance of the topics they study to the solution of real-life problems. The writing style is exceptionally clear and motivating.

There is a very nice flow to the narrative--ideas are logically connected to one another. There are references made to the material presented earlier in the chapter as well as in other chapters. This is terrific because it is just too easy for the introductory course to seem like a collection of unrelated topics. The amount of research that is described is just right--not too much and not too little. It is also used effectively to illustrate the points being made; it is not thrown in just to be scholarly.

About the Author
James S. Nairne is the winner of the 2001 Charles P. Murphy award, a lifetime teaching award at Purdue University, which at the time had not been awarded to a psychologist for over 30 years. This award reflects Nairne's record of success as a committed teacher and researcher, including the receipt of Purdue's highest teaching award as well as numerous teaching awards from the psychology department and the School of Liberal Arts. Professor of psychological sciences at Purdue University in Indiana, Nairne received his undergraduate degree at UC-Berkeley and his Ph.D. in psychology from Yale University. He delivered the 2000 G. Stanley Hall address at the APA. He's an active researcher in cognitive psychology, specializing in human memory, and has published dozens of articles in professional journals. He is associate editor for Psychonomic Bulletin and Review, a past associate editor of the Journal of Human Memory and Language, and has served on numerous editorial boards.

Truly comprehensive explanations

If you are going over Calculus 3, this is the resource you need. The explanations are truly comprehensive the price is right, and at this level in mathematics you NEED some kind of comprehensive solutions manual (you are paying at least several hundred for a high level calc class, the technology to assist in solving the problems getting comprehensive solutions to check work is what you should be doing).

It's more useful, in my view

I ordered this book, but I believe I received a different book. I got the student solutions manual by Clegg and Frank. Thus, I am not certain I am rating the same book. At any rate, I think the book is OK. It does not include the description of the problems, which is not an issue if you own the textbook. But, must importantly, it does not provide explanations for most of the solutions. In this sense, I do not feel it is that helpful. It's more useful, in my view, to provide guidance and explanations of the why than to just list a cold solution. The logic behind the solution is more relevant for the learner than the actual solution.

About the Author
Kathy Yoshiwara was born in Derby in the UK and grew up in Richmond, Virginia. She attended Michigan State University, where she studied Greek and mathematics. She did graduate work at UCLA and earned an MA in mathematics in 1977. She left UCLA in 1979 to join the faculty at Pierce College, where she has been teaching ever since, except for the 1988-1999 academic year, when she taught at Barnsley College in Yorkshire (northern England) on a Fulbright teaching exchange. She is the author or co-author of three mathematics textbooks and is a member of the Calculus Consortium for Higher Education, where she is part of the writing team for their Precalculus text. She is a member of the MAA (Mathematical Association of America) and currently serves on the Committee for Curriculum Renewal and the First Two Years (CRAFTY). In 1996 she received the Award for Distinguished College or University Teaching of Mathematics from the Southern California Section of the MAA. She is married to Bruce Yoshiwara and benefits from his expertise in all things mathematical.

Bruce Yoshiwara has taught full-time at L.A. Pierce College since 1989 (except for the 1998-1999 academic year, when he and his wife Katherine Yoshiwara both had Fulbright Teacher Exchange positions at Barnsley College, England). He is co-author (Katherine is the principal author) of three algebra and pre-algebra textbooks. He serves on the Mathematical Association of American (MAA) Committee on Computers in Mathematics Education and is a consultant for Project NExT (New Experiences in Teaching). Bruce is editor of the Pierce Math Department newsletter and maintains the department web page.

About the Author
Richard L. Scheaffer, Professor Emeritus of Statistics, University of Florida, received his Ph.D. in statistics from Florida State University. Accompanying a career of teaching, research and administration, Dr. Scheaffer has led efforts on the improvement of statistics education throughout the school and college curriculum. Anything but Wackerly

This is an adequate text up until chapter 6. The probability chapter the the discrete probability distributions are great. The concepts and derivations are logically laid out and make sense. Things begin to get frustrating in chapter 4 and really fall apart after chapter 6. After chapter four the author no longer tries to put anything in context. He derives very little and simply states long, cryptic formulas and expects the reader to magicaly understand the big picture and fill in the gaps on their own. He skips over the over 200 years of the development in statictical theory and simply states the results and the student is expected to fill in the gap. The most self evident properties are expounded on in the chapters and the most important and subtle properties are hidden in the exercises or neglected altogether. I am nearly finished with my undergraduate degree in applied mathematics and am mathematicaly mature. I am comfortable with both applied and pure/proof-type mathematics and this text makes my stomach turn. It makes me want to reconsider my major. I am giving this text 2 stars simply because the first 5 chapters are adequate. If you just need a course in probability, this might be the text for you. If you need to move on to statistical inference and you need the big picture/contextual background explained rather than pluging and chuging blindly with nonsensical formulas, then this is not the text for you. Way to drop the ball, Wackerly!

Solid Presentation But Lacking Concision

The sixth edition of Math. Statistics w/ Applications is a solid book with good information. However, the form of presentation was not for me. The authors have chosen an explicative style which tends to be overly wordy.
When I begin to read a chapter, I tend to get frustrated and impatient because they either try to show you all the subtleties at once or give you a long-ass paragraph that can be said with one sentence. Thus, The most important stuff is buried in a mountain of over-whelming text.
I have ditched this book in favor of Ghahramani's "Fundamentals of Probability, Second Edition" for my Math Stat I class.

Good reference book overall

Overall, a good book. Could be a better even after excluding minor details- the ones noticed mentioned below.

Background necessary: Calculus- especially Taylor series, Integration by parts, solving for areas by integration and figuring out their limits; Even with a sufficient background, some proofs are quite rigorous or not well written enough, not sure which sometimes.

Comments based on first 7 Chapters of the book:
Standard deviation- excellently described
Relative frequency- NOT very well described. Makes sense on looking at chart in the book, but readers may forget to look at chart. A good definition for this important term is needed.
p. 43 They mention multinomial expansion before binomial distribution 1 chapter later. Very unnecessary, and doesn't make sense for the general reader to just stick it in there. It's like trying to squeeze information just to try to put something mathematically interesting that is more of a hinderance for learning permutations, combinations, and the multiplication rule. They show it to try to combine the principles together, but to make any sense of the multinomial expansion, besides choosing numbers to do it out, the proof to understand it fully is graduate level mathematics. A big no no for the book!! The least the book could do is expand by showing a specific example of this, and maybe even the proof itself, or just not mention it at all.

Section 2.7, p. 50 intro- too wordy. "relative frequencey of occurrence" in parentheses should probably be taken out for less confusion since a rel. freq. does not have to be based on a conditional probability occurring. Leaving it in leaves the reader at possible ambiguity.
Section 2.9, p. 62 Unnecessarily complicated- 1/5 * 3/4 = answer makes a lot more sense than them breaking it down into an unnecessary 7+ steps = answer.
Binomial Theorem probably could've been presented better. The idea of the binomial expansion and definition 3.7 (binomial distribution theorem) should be explained together right after definition 3.6 (explanation of a binomial experiment) rather than confusing the reader and leaving it off until later on.
p. 102-104 The book does a good job relating some word problems to the real world in good, brief explanations.
p.152 Step function should show hollow points if not the filled end points as well at least- too sloppy.
p. 172 Example 4.9 well done, but makes it sound like = (y- u)/o was intuitively obvious even to the beginner. The book tends to introduce some examples like this to introduce a theory. Just something one needs to get used to. It would be nice if they were able to put a sentence on page 1 about how some conecepts are inrtoduced by example first, but of course not everyone would read it anyway.
p. 188, sec. 4.8- great summary explaining existence for variety of statistical models
Example 5.1, p. 212- not a very good example. The table's correlation to the sample space given is overly ambiguous. Example is confusing, especially since they use the starting point starting from the top right corner instead of the top left corner and show no indication of what stands for what without reader figuring it out. Poorly set up.
p.213 typo- 6/9, not 8/9- tricky to figure out for a beginner
p.225 calculation- just add "= 1" to show solving of one of the integrals. Book sloppily leaves out this simple, but crucial step. A hard read for beginners to notice.
"degrees of freedom (d.f.)" can probably be better and simply defined than the book's "attempts," such as always one less than number of trials or something like that rather than always showing d.f. by notation only.

It's quite arguable if maybe just normal, or normal and t distributions and then central limit theorem should be mentioned in the book first, rather than throwing in all the different kinds of distributions in to learn for Chapter 3 first.

About the Author
The late David Hildebrand earned his Ph.D. at Carnegie-Mellon University, and was affiliated with the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.

Lyman Ott earned his Bachelor's degree in Mathematics and Education and Master's degree in Mathematics from Bucknell University, and Ph.D in Statistics from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute. After two years working in statistics in the pharmaceutical industry, Dr. Ott became assistant professor in the Statistic Department at the University of Florida in 1968 and was named associate professor in 1972. He joined Merrell-National laboratories in 1975 as head of the Biostatistics Department and then head of the company's Research Data Center. He later became director of Biomedical Information Systems, Vice President of Global Systems and Quality Improvement in Research and Development, and Senior Vice President Business Process Improvement and Biometrics. He retired from the pharmaceutical industry in 1998, and now serves as consultant and Board of Advisors member for Abundance Technologies, Inc. Dr. Ott has published extensively in scientific journals and authored or co-authored seven college textbooks including Basic Statistical Ideas for Managers, Statistics: A Tool for the Social Sciences and An Introduction to Statistical Methods and Data Analysis. He has been a member of the Industrial Research Institute, the Drug Information Association and the Biometrics Society. In addition, he is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association and received the Biostatistics Career Achievement Award from the Pharmaceutical research and Manufacturers of America in 1998. He was also an All-American soccer player in college and is a member of the Bucknell University Athletic Hall of Fame.

A muddled mess

It's hard to believe that a Wharton professor produced this book but I guess it's just proof that no school is perfect. I'm sure the authors understand statistical analysis but they have no clue how to organize the material or communicate what they know effectively. Honestly, even if you have learned the concepts for a chapter through another source this book can be hard to follow.
Want an example of the murky text? Try this typical run-on sentence quoted directly from the book. "In the same way, the normal random variable is an abstraction, because in theory any numerical value, negative as well as positive, is possible, and the probability histogram is a smooth, symmetric, bell-shaped curve." Try stringing together 800 pages of similar prose and you have an idea what awaits you here.
I watched an entire class including the professor disown this book because it was useless. Do yourself a favor and avoid this turkey if at all possible.

The worst one among intro statistics books.

My MBA class (top 20 program)used this book. But even my instructor did not recommend us to read this book. Instead he just taught class with his own hand-out. We only used this book for exercise problems. There were students who had many years of research experience. But they even complained about this book and recommended me to read Anderson's " Statistics for Business and Economics". Anyway, I think if you have a good instructor it is O.K. Otherwise I am sure that it will be very painful. Gook luck.

The worse book about statistics

Do NOT buy this book. I am sure the author understands a lot about statistics but he definitely does not know how to organize its ideas. The book makes the subject appear much more complex than it really is. If you need to learn statistics are not a Statistics PhD student then what I really recommend you to do is to get another book. For MBA students: This book is way more complex than you will need to know for your studies.

They provide the clearest illumination of reciprocal causation and its relation to integrative models of abnormality. . . About the Author
David H. Barlow is an internationally recognized expert and leader in clinical psychology, having pioneered many treatments and investigations in anxiety and mood disorders. Currently Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry at Boston University, Dr. Barlow is also founder and Director Emeritus of the Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders, one of the largest research clinics of its kind in the world. Previously, he was distinguished professor at State University of New York at Albany. From 1975 to 1979, he was professor of psychiatry and psychology at Brown University, where he also founded the clinical psychology internship program. From 1969 to 1975, he was professor of psychiatry at the University of Mississippi, where he founded the Medical School psychology residency program. Dr. Barlow received his B.A. from the University of Notre Dame, his M.A. from Boston College, and his Ph.D. from the University of Vermont. He is the recipient of a Lifetime Achievement award from the American Psychological Association and is a fellow of the American Psychological Society.

V. Mark Durand is known worldwide as an authority in the area of autism spectrum disorders. He is a professor of psychology at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg, where he was the founding Dean of Arts and Sciences and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. Dr. Durand is a fellow of the American Psychological Association and has received over $4 million in federal funding to study the behavior problems in children with disabilities. Previously he served in a variety of leadership positions at the University at Albany, including chair of the psychology department, interim dean of Arts and Sciences, and founder of the Center for Autism and Related Disabilities. He received his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. (all in psychology) at the State University of New York Stony Brook. Dr. Durand was awarded the University Award for Excellence in Teaching at SUNY Albany in 1991, and the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Research and Creative Scholarship at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg in 2007. Currently a member of the Professional Advisory Board for the Autism Society of America, he is the co-editor of the Journal of Positive Behavior Interventions and has written 10 books as well as over 100 publications on functional communication, educational programming, and behavior therapy. Dr. Durand developed a unique treatment for severe behavior problems that is used worldwide. Most recently he developed an innovative approach (Optimistic Parenting) to help families work with their challenging children.
