This is a very clean well-written text that is a wonderful supplement for introductory courses in human services. It provides an excellent overview about a career in human services, in addition to valuable chapters on a number of specific career paths. Each chapter provides 'day-in-the-life' vignettes. There are also some fine resources that point students to additional information. I look forward to publication of this book so I can adopt it! While other introductory texts do an overview of career paths, they can't go far enough. This text fills a gap between the student's hunger for information on career paths and what can reasonably be covered in an introductory text. I will adopt the minute it's out!

The Helping Professions: A Careers Sourcebook offers a panoramic view of the pathways in the helping professions ranging from paraprofessional to postdoctoral training. Each career category is filled with facts, figures, and references designed to assist the exploring student in making informed choices about their future aspirations.

About the Author
Ph.D., Harvard University

Merrill Youkeles, professor emeritus at Kingsborough Community College of the City University of New York, received his doctoral degree in studies on aging at Columbia University with the aid of a grant from the Administration on Aging. Dr. Youkeles is a certified social worker who received his M.S.W. from the University of Pennsylvania and is the former director of the Mental Health and Human Services Program at Kingsborough College. He has more than 40 years of experience as a practitioner, consultant and professor.

A very interesting book that goes into depth about the different kinds of abuse (child, sexual, domestic, elder). The different levels of sexual predators is explored. All theories are presented from the macro, meso and micro levels. A fascinating and informative book. Something I will keep on hand for a long time.

jumbled = confusing = easily forgotten lessons

My son was assigned this textbook last year in a junior college math class. He and his classmates found it frustrating. I had to spend hours tutoring him and several of his friends. As a result, I became intimately familiar with Cohen's Precalculus and the confusion it caused students.

My opinion of this book is much like that of the first and last reviewers. There is no discernible order to the chapters; the book doesn't progress in any logical way from what the students have just learned to what immediately follows. (For example: Why didn't the chapter on linear equations immediately follow the chapter on matrices? That's the whole point of matrices--we use them to solve linear equations!).

Sad to say, this book is just a big jumble of miscellaneous material lumped together under the rubric of precalculus. I don't know why the author and publisher chose to arrange the material this way. A previous reviewer suggests that the market forces textbook authors to include everything but the kitchen sink. Even if true, this explanation is irrelevant: it might explain why the book crams so much between its covers, but it doesn't explain the haphazard arrangement of the material. The book certainly didn't do my son or his classmates much good. Although they managed to memorize and regurgitate their lessons well enough to pass the final exam, the mathematical knowledge they gleaned wasn't retained very well because it was never put into any kind of logical order. This book provided no framework that made sense of the random lessons they received. In my opinion, that is not a good way to teach anything, especially an abstract subject like math.

Clear, yet Strangely Incoherent

David Cohen does an excellent job in the individual chapters explaining this or that component of precalculus. But the book as a whole is strangely incoherent. The order of the chapters seems almost random, as the book jumps from topic to disconnected topic. For example, we are given a clear account of how to work matrices...and then are never told or shown WHY we bothered learning it in the first place--we're hustled off to another unrelated topic. So-called theorists in our fad-ridden education departments call this technique "spiraling," a tactic designed to keep the little kiddies on their toes and off balance and thus more receptive to exploring new things. Or something like that. In actual practice, however, as well as according to common sense, the result of "spiraling" is only frustration and confusion. If Cohen would rearrange the order of the chapters and provide some connective tissue, this would probably make it a really good textbook.

Clear and Detailed

I used this text as preparation for university calculus. Each chapter has a high level of rigor and clearly explains the mechanics of solving problems. The text ignores extensive discussion of applications, which is a good thing. References to applications in introductory math texts always strike me as ad hoc, distracting and useless. If you want to know why some particular analytic method is useful in the real world then you need to study up in the particular discipline. If you want a straight and detailed exposition of methods then this is the text. Much stronger than the Larson texts on college algebra/trigonometry.

About the Author
Richard H. Williams is Professor Emeritus at the University of New Mexico. Before beginning his teaching career, Professor Williams was a staff member for electronic test equipment at Sandia National Laboratories (1953-1959). He then worked as a research associate at the University of New Mexico (1959-1961). From 1961 to 1998, he was a faculty member in the Electrical and Computer Engineering (EECE) Department at the University of New Mexico. His teaching experience included Electronics, Biomedical Engineering, Digital Signal Processing, and Modern Manufacturing Methods. These subjects included probability and statistical methods.

One of the Best Kept Secrets Out There.

If you are an engineering student with a desire to learn about the subject of probability and how to apply it, then this is the book to get. If you are arrogant and believe that you have some superior gift, you may look down on it because of its simplicity. This is one of the few books that actually teach the subject by examples. Also it has answers to most of the problems. The author was not an arrogant person who was tryin to impress his peers.

About the Author
Richard L. Scheaffer, Professor Emeritus of Statistics, University of Florida, received his Ph.D. in statistics from Florida State University. Accompanying a career of teaching, research and administration, Dr. Scheaffer has led efforts on the improvement of statistics education throughout the school and college curriculum. Co-author of five textbooks, he was one of the developers of the Quantitative Literacy Project that formed the basis of the data analysis strand in the curriculum standards of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. He also led the task force that developed the AP Statistics Program, for which he served as Chief Faculty Consultant. Dr. Scheaffer is a Fellow and past president of the American Statistical Association, a past chair of the Conference Board of the Mathematical Sciences, and an advisor on numerous statistics education projects.

This is the solution manual for the second edition textbook which is no longer used.
It is suggested by amazon as "frequently bought together" which I'm sure is true, but this is misleading and causes people to spend $70 on a book that they can not use.
The second and third edition texts have different problems so this book is completely useless.
I plan to return it.

Gerard Egan, Ph.D., is Emeritus Professor of Psychology and Organizational Studies at Loyola University of Chicago. He also conducts workshops in these areas both in the United States and abroad and is a consultant at a variety of companies and institutions worldwide.

The skilled manual

The Skilled Helper is a comprehensive manual for counsellors in helping clients. It highlights the collaborative relationship between the counsellor and client that enables successful counselling. The book intricately works through step by step through Egan's three-stage model. The introduction takes the reader through the history of the model and then addresses whether helping is needed and the problems helpers may come across. It puts to rest what the book is about and what the book is not about, i.e. it is a manual, yet not the total curriculum. It is good in highlighting the need for sensitivity in the cultural sense as well as the flexibility of the model. It goes to great lengths to state that each case is individual and must be treated so. `The helping model, while providing guidance, must remain flexible to the needs of the client. One form of rigidity is to drag clients mechanically through the stages and steps of the model.' The book demonstrates how to achieve respect, genuineness and empathy to make the client feel valued, accepted and prepared to trust the counsellor. That environment will enable the client to explore, understand and take action, the main components within Egan's model. I like the way that Egan highlights all the components of the model in the chapters, explains them in detail, if necessary offering definitions, and then with the aid of case studies, shows how they can be applied, and what results they could produce. For example: `Do not be surprised when clients react strongly to being challenged. In the following example, the helper has just delivered a brief summary of the problem situation to the client and has gently pointed out the self-destructive nature of some of his behaviours. Helper: I'm not sure how all this sounds to you. Client: I thought you were on my side. Now you sound like all the others. And I'm paying you to talk like this to me! Even though the helper was tentative in his challenge, the client still reacts defensively. Here are two different approaches to the client's defensiveness. Helper A: All I've done is summarise what you have been saying about yourself. Let's look at each point and see if this isn't the case. Helper B: So it sounds harsh and unfair to you.... Maybe dumping all this on you is unfair.... Let's back up.' Egan shows us both outcomes Helper A confronts the client and may well lead to an argument, where as Helper B backs up and allows the client space. These sorts of scenarios appear throughout the book. He also offers personal evaluation strategies as well as boxes that highlight questions that need to be asked or addressed in order to help the client. I think that this an excellent book for those in the helping profession. It proves to be a good informative read, and can easily be followed. It is a valuable resource that can easily be referred to.

Brilliant resource for counselling !!!

Egan "Skilled Helper" - Provides readers with the basics of being a counsellor/therapist. It is not the laymen's term of "basics" - But I refer to as the real fundamental & technicalities (basics) of being a counsellor/therapist. This book is very detailed, informative, easy to understand and very well structured in organised. The book begins with the chapter of defining `helping' - such as what is helping all about, goals of helping, the `downside' (messiness) & `upside' of helping.
Subsequent chapters of the book are really `stimulating' (very detailed & fruitful) - what I meant is that it provides readers what is required to be an efficient counsellor/therapist - the basics ingredients for an effective relationship between the client and the therapist. Very detailed information is provided writing in the book - topics relating counselling skills such as `attendance', `listening skills, basic & advanced empathy, summarising, paraphrasing, probing, reflection of feelings, the skiller helper model - reflecting counselling process etc..,
This book is divided into 6 major parts - each comprising of about 3 chapters: [Part 1] features introduction, overview of the skiller-helping model (decision making process practiced by counsellors/therapist in counselling), the helping relationship - i.e the counselling relationship between client and therapist - how counselling relationship is influenced by norms, multi-cultural + helping clients develop empowerment - responsibility for themselves. [Part 2] features on topics related to basic microskills for helping - communication skills of attending, listening, understanding, basic empathy, using the art of `probing' and `summarising' to assist the client in achieving concreteness and clarity ~ some clients may have problems in expressing themselves - use of probe enhances clarity of what client is expressing. [Part 3] features on topics related back to part 1 `Egan Skiller-Helper Model' and the use of advanced communication skills - empathy, direct mutual self talk, encouraging self-challenge, dealing w/ reluctant and resistant clients, helping clients challenge themselves, clients working on rational decision making - setting goals etc., [Part 4] features on helping clients determine what they need and want - using skills of divergent thinking, creativity, brainstorming, establishing & formulating goals that are realistic, clear & specific - commitment building issues relating to the client etc... [Part 5] featuring on `strategies' topics for assisting the client in getting what they want, choosing and implementing a `best-fit' strategy for the particular client, plan-implementation process for the client (assisting client in making plans to achieve their desired goals) Lastly [Part 6] features on topics on assisting clients to be effective tacticians, such as topics on dealing with procrastination, obstacles in plan-implementation, etc..,
Egan `Skiller-Helper' is an excellent resource for students who wishes to focus or specialised in counselling, it is also beneficial for existing counsellors who wish to refine their skills. I have been reading the book a couple of times and still feel that the book is an excellent resource for guiding the counsellor in developing "WIN-WIN" relationships with their clients!

My 100-word book review

Egan's The Skilled Helper is a classic resource, practical and outcome-oriented, for those of us involved in the helping professions (not only counselling but also related fields such as life coaching.) As a student who has mostly been exposed to the Rogerian, client-centred model of counselling, I am interested by Egan's pragmatic approach, where empathy is not seen to be an end in itself but, in the later stages of the helping process, becomes secondary to the search for desirable outcomes. Egan's discussion of the "shadow side" of helping, where good intentions can have poor results, is also highly useful.

Edward Teyber is a psychology professor and director of the psychology clinic at California State University, San Bernardino. Dr. Teyber received his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Michigan State University. About the Author
J. Jeffries McWhirter holds a diplomate in counseling psychology from the American Board of Professional Psychology and is a fellow of the American Psychological Association, the American Psychological Society, the Academy of Counseling Psychology, and the Association of Specialists in Group Work. He is a professor in the Division of Psychology in Education at Arizona State University. He has also maintained a small private practice for nearly 30 years. Jeffries is Benedict and Robert's father, and Benedict and Ellen are married.

Benedict T. McWhirter received his doctorate degree from the Counseling Psychology Program at Arizona State University. He is an assistant professor of counseling psychology at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, and a licensed psychologist in the state of Nebraska.

Anna McWhirter is a Ph.D. candidate in the Reading Program in the Division of Curriculum and Instruction, College of Education, Arizona State University. She is currently teaching a university survival skills course at ASU. She is also a co-director of music at St. Benedict Parish in Chandler, Arizona.

Ellen Hawley McWhirter has a Ph.D. in counseling psychology from Arizona State University. She is an assistant professor of counseling psychology at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, and a licensed psychologist in the state of Nebraska.

Good introduction to at-risk youth

The McWhirter's book provides a nice introduction to workingwith at-risk youth. This book is undoubtedly marked towardsundergraduate students and as a result the authors do a few things that are a bt too "cute" for my taste--like using their poetry and sayings at the beginning each chapter and using a tree metaphor to talk about at-risk behavior. Also, I did not find the case studies particularly relevant but are probably fine for students with limited experience workings with this population. None of this though detracts from an otherwise wonderful book. The authors do a nice job of addressing topics like risky sexual behavior, violence, and suicide and a good series of chapters on intervention. Having said this, though, I think this is a very nice book, enjoyed reading it, and will recommend it to others who want a overview of at-risk youth. END
