About the Author
Wayne L. Winston is Professor Emeritus of Decision Sciences at the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University and is now a Professor of Decision and Information Sciences at the Bauer College at the University of Houston. He has won more than 45 teaching awards, including the school-wide MBA award six times. His current interest is in showing how spreadsheet models can be used to solve business problems in all disciplines, particularly in finance, sports, and marketing. In addition to publishing more than 20 articles in leading journals, Dr. Winston has written such successful textbooks as OPERATIONS RESEARCH: APPLICATIONS AND ALGORITHMS, MATHEMATICAL PROGRAMMING: APPLICATIONS AND ALGORITHMS, SIMULATION MODELING WITH @RISK, DATA ANALYSIS FOR MANAGERS, SPREADSHEET MODELING AND APPLICATIONS, MATHLETICS, DATA ANALYSIS AND BUSINESS MODELING WITH EXCEL 2013, MARKETING ANALYTICS, and FINANCIAL MODELS USING SIMULATION AND OPTIMIZATION. He received his B.S. degree in mathematics from MIT and his Ph.D. in operations research from Yale.

Very good for beginners in OR

I have completed my Bachelor's degree in Mathematics and Statistics without a little knowledge about Optimization. Fortunately, I came across this book. This book has played a big role by creating for me a career in Operations Research. It contains many industrial problems to demonstrate the usefulness of the subject. It replaces the instructor by its good explanatory texts. With this book, you are guaranteed to have a break through in the area of Operations research.

From Deterministic to Stochastic

This is one of the excellent industrial engineering books. From deterministic and simple linear programming to stochastic systems such as queueing models or dynamic programming, you may read and "learn" lots of things about OR. However, for stochastic cases you will need extra help for its matematics. But if you want to learn something about industrial engineering or something related with it, that is the book you must buy.

A great book for undergraduate engineering students

I have used this book for five years in my Operation Research classes. Its emphasis is in the mathematical modeling. The explanations are complete and clean. But, the exercises are the best part: a lot of examples and modeling exercises. A very good book for engineering students.

About the Author
Stephen Thornton is Professor of Physics at the University of Virginia. He has over 130 research publications in experimental nuclear physics and has done research at several accelerator facilities in the United States and Europe. He has directed the research for 25 graduate students. He has held two U.S. Senior Fulbright-Hays Fellowships and a Max-Planck Fellowship to do research at the Max Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics in Heidelberg, Germany on two occasions. He was the founding Director of the University of Virginia Institute of Nuclear and Particle Physics. He has published three college textbooks for physics: "Classical Dynamics" and "Modern Physics" (both published with Brooks Cole, a part of Cengage Learning), and "Physics for Scientists and Engineers." He is currently Director of the Master of Arts in Physics Education program at the University of Virginia, which has graduated more than 70 high school physics teachers. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and a member of several organizations including American Association of Physics Teachers, American Association for the Advancement of Science, National Science Teachers Association, Virginia Association of Science Teachers (past President), and the Virginia Math and Science Coalition. He has developed multiple courses for undergraduate students and high school physics teachers.

Andrew Rex has been Professor of Physics at the University of Puget Sound since 1982. He frequently teaches the Modern Physics course, so he has a deep sense of student and instructor challenges. He is the author of several textbooks, including "Modern Physics," "Essential College Physics," and "Integrated Physics and Calculus." In addition to textbook writing, he studies foundations of the second law of thermodynamics, which has led to the publication of several papers and the widely acclaimed book, "Maxwell's Demon: Entropy, Information, Computing."

Definitely NOT Worth the Price!!!

If you are looking for a solutions manual to this book, try again. This student's solutions manual is terrible!
When I got it in the mail, I said to myself, "You have got to be kidding!"
The thing is thinner than one of my second grade chapter book!

The chosen solutions that appear in the manual are not logical at all either. Usually I will see solutions manuals that contain either all odds or all even numbered problems. Not this book! It contains random problems from each chapter, absolutely random, I had more luck looking for answers online!

Some of the solutions weren't even that helpful either for studying for my test in the class. Either the problem wasn't solved in the book, or it was solved and explained to an inadequate level.
This just makes me fuming at how textbook publishers can think that they can publish a "solutions manual" like this and put such a ridiculously high price point on it. Avoid buying this at all costs, and if you happen to purchase it anyway, you'll get a nice laugh when you see this thing come in the mail!
The "textbook" for my tennis course was larger than this!

About the Author
David W. Ball is Professor of Chemistry at Cleveland State University. His research interests include computational chemistry of new high energy materials, matrix isolation spectroscopy, and various topics in chemical education. He has over 160 publications, equally split between research articles and educational articles, including five books currently in print. He has won recognition for the quality of his teaching, receiving several departmental and college teaching awards as well as the university's Distinguished Faculty Teaching Award in 2002. He has been a contributing editor to "Spectroscopy" magazine since 1994, where he writes "The Baseline" column on fundamental topics in spectroscopy. He is also active in professional service, serving on the Board of Trustees for the Northeastern Ohio Science and Engineering Fair and the Board of Governors of the Cleveland Technical Societies Council. He is also very active in the American Chemical Society, serving the Cleveland Section as chair twice (in 1998 and 2009) and Councilor from 2001 to the present.

Gordon's long career in university-level keyboard instruction qualifies him to present this comprehensive text addressed to serious students of solo piano literature, most of them presumably performers who will keep the book as a source of ideas for repertoire and information for program notes. Whole chapters are devoted to brief biographies of and descriptions of individual pieces by the great European masters, with histories of forms (sonatas, character pieces, etc.) and styles presented as they evolved. Separate chapters collectively treat minor masters and certain geographic and style groupings (e.g., Russian, Spanish, "nontonal" composers). A Must-Have Resource For Pianists and Piano Teachers

This is a wonderful reference book for anyone studying the piano. It begins with a brief history on the development of keyboard instruments (for a more in-depth history of the instrument, check out Men, Women and Pianos: A Social History), and then chronologically goes through each composer and gives a brief biography and then discusses their contributions to keyboard literature.

One great thing about this book is that the author touches on features of most of the keyboard works of the masters, including every single sonata of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert. The book also contains musical excerpts to illustrate points made.

This book is a wonderful place to start if you are interested in expanding your knowledge of piano literature; through studying this book and listening to the works discussed, I have found dozens of pieces I would love to learn that I would not have otherwise known about.

Every serious pianist must have this book, along with Hinson's Guide to the Pianist's Repertoire. As a pianist and piano teacher, I highly recommend this book.

The Key to Keyboard Literature

Gordon's "History of Keyboard Literature" sits next to Grout/Palisca's "History of Western Music" on my shelf. As a student studying piano and a future educator, I have found the book to be a great resource. One who sits at the either the piano, organ, or harpsichord must be familiar with the vast history and repertoire written for keyboard instruments. The book is organized chronilogically. It begins with a very satisfying history of the development and construction of early keyboard instruments as well as a thourough overview of the role of the keyboard up to the end of the Renaissance. After this it takes a composer by composer approach chronilogically starting with Bach and Handel. Published in 1996, this book is very up to date and provides many names, especially twentieth century composers. Like any history book, this is not the final word on the subject of keyboard music, but it is an excellent first stop for whatever research one is up to. A must for any pianists shelf.

I used this as a text book for my Piano Repertoire class. I used it all the time in that class but also as reference for classes like Music History. Well written and organized with information every piano student needs. I can see why this is the gold standard.

Great starting point for studying the intersection of science and sound

This book is an excellent starting place for someone who wants a somewhat quantitative treatment of the science of sound as it relates to music, but does not have the advanced math background necessary to digest something like "The Physics of Musical Instruments". The chapters and sections in this third edition are the same as in the previous edition, however some changes have been made to the content. The book is updated with more current references to the end-of-chapter bibliographies, and there is some new material, especially in areas affected by the personal computer's role in the digital processing of sound.

The author provides an integrated understanding of three major areas: the production of sound by various sources, the propagation of sound from source to listener, and the perception of sound by the human brain.

For easier reading, each chapter starts with an introductory section that sets up the chapter. There are also summaries and lists of symbols, terms, and relations highlighting the most important terms and quantitative expressions in each chapter. There are realistic and interesting exercise sets containing both qualitative and quantitative questions for each chapter, with most chapters containing 20-25 exercises. There are also projects included that provide out-of-class assignments that generally require students to do research. There are approximately three of these in each chapter. Finally, several new photographs have been added to this third edition, particularly of the inner ear structure and of the vocal cords in motion.

Like the previous reviewer, I make a habit of purchasing and reading several textbooks a year, and sometimes I am very disappointed and sometimes I am not. This is one of those purchases that I found most worthwhile. If you are interested in the intersection of math, acoustics, perception, and musical instruments I highly recommend it. A math background up to the level of algebra and geometry should be sufficient to understand the quantitative portions of the book. The table of contents is as follows:

This book is a thorough overview of physics behind music. In the first part of the book, Hall lays the foundation with an investigation into waves, sound propagation, sound measurement, and the human ear. The middle third of the book takes up families of instruments, and how they work to create musical sounds. The last part of the book investigates room acoustics, sound reproduction, and the perception of intervals, tunings, and musical structure. Each chapter includes references and suggestions for further reading, numerous mathematical exercises for practicing the concepts covered in the chapter, and a list of potential projects for further investigation. The book includes a glossary and answers to selected problems, as well as an index.
I read quite a few textbooks for work and occasionally just for interest's sake, but this one really stands out. After reading the first few chapters, I found myself wishing I could sit in on Hall's lectures. His style is intensely personal, and his explanations are incredibly clear. I'll admit that sometimes my eyes glossed over while slogging through some of the numbers and charts, but it was mainly my fault for not being a more active reader. In order to get the most from this book, you really need to read it with calculator in hand, or better yet, an Excel spreadsheet open, ready to try out the numbers and scenarios that Hall provides us with. Nevertheless, the math is kept quite simple- -no calculus; if you can do algebra, you should be able to get through the book.
I've found the information in the book to be quite useful. Hall's description of how resonance works in drums has helped me make sense of my tabla teacher's pickiness about where my fingers strike the tabla heads. And at last I understand the physics behind why some rooms in my house are acoustically dead, and others are alive. Hall has opened up a new world of ideas for me, and I will be thinking them through for years to come. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to know how music really works.

About the Author
S. Christian Albright received his B.S. degree in mathematics from Stanford in 1968 and his Ph.D. in operations research from Stanford in 1972. Since then, he has been teaching in the Operations and Decision Technologies Department in the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University. He has taught courses in management science, computer simulation, and statistics to all levels of business students: undergraduates, MBAs, and doctoral students. His current interest is in spreadsheet modeling, including development of VBA applications in Excel. Dr. Albright has published more than 20 articles in leading operations research journals in the area of applied probability. He has also published a number of successful textbooks, including DATA ANALYSIS AND DECISION MAKING, DATA ANALYSIS FOR MANAGERS, and SPREADSHEET MODELING AND APPLICATIONS.

Wayne L. Winston is Professor Emeritus of Decision Sciences at the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University and is now a Professor of Decision and Information Sciences at the Bauer College at the University of Houston. He has won more than 45 teaching awards, including the school-wide MBA award six times. His current interest is in showing how spreadsheet models can be used to solve business problems in all disciplines, particularly in finance, sports, and marketing. In addition to publishing more than 20 articles in leading journals, Dr. Winston has written such successful textbooks as OPERATIONS RESEARCH: APPLICATIONS AND ALGORITHMS, MATHEMATICAL PROGRAMMING: APPLICATIONS AND ALGORITHMS, SIMULATION MODELING WITH @RISK, DATA ANALYSIS FOR MANAGERS, SPREADSHEET MODELING AND APPLICATIONS, MATHLETICS, DATA ANALYSIS AND BUSINESS MODELING WITH EXCEL 2013, MARKETING ANALYTICS, and FINANCIAL MODELS USING SIMULATION AND OPTIMIZATION. Christopher J. Zappe earned his B.A. in Mathematics from DePauw University in 1983 and his M.B.A. and Ph.D. in Decision Sciences from Indiana University in 1987 and 1988, respectively. Since 1993, Professor Zappe has been serving as an associate professor in the decision sciences area of the Department of Management at Bucknell University (Lewisburg, PA). He has published articles in scholarly journals such as Managerial and Decision Economics, OMEGA, Naval Research Logistics, and Interfaces.

Learn to use Excel

Using Excel is a heavy focus of this textbook. It would be excellent for MBA students who are quantitatively oriented, but maybe a bit advanced for undergraduates.

It is very practical in learning the basics and learning how to produce practical tables and charts in Excel. The examples are very good at teaching the steps involved.

This probably isn't a good book for self study, unless you are specifically looking to sharpen Excel skills.

I teach MBA statistics at a business school, and use this text for one course. The benefit is being able to do useful analysis and exhibits as a result of taking the course. I also have an MBA myself and worked in industry many years before going back to school for a phd degree and becoming a teacher.

Not A Good Purchase For Me

I gave this book two stars because I liked the fact that it uses Excel rather than SPSS, since more professionals own that software. They handle some topics really well, but others,... Let's just say that when they were good, they were good, but when they were bad (skimpy in explaining), they were really bad. The authors clearly knew how to use Excel to handle statistics with a lot of "nifty, real-world experiences". But, often, the examples do not map to the problems we "mere mortals" should attempt to answer or even map to the problems in the textbook. Sometimes it was as if one person wrote the example, but someone else did the problems at the end of the chapter. Your best bet is to hope that your professor maps to the problems, because the authors sure didn't. In addition, I'm somewhat old fashioned. I liked the answers to odd-numbered questions in the back of the textbook. The authors did not include them. I used to get a lot of extra study time, "plowing" through every type of question I could to see if I was understanding the concept. No such luck, here. You can answer questions until you're blue. There are no answers to double check. (There goes any attempt to be independent and do extra work) (And if I'm forced to be really ticky,...the print is small and the text is congested,...if you've got older eyes like mine, buy a magnifying glass or better yet, pick a better book. I understand the authors may have others that work much better.

Chapter 19 on addiction as a disease of the human spirit is as clear and simple an explanation as I've ever encountered on the spiritual aspects of addiction. Well-done. When I teach this chapter, most students have an 'ah-ha' experience."

About the Author
Dr. Harold E. Doweiko is a licensed psychologist who has been on staff at the Gundersen-Lutheran medical Center in La Crosse, Wisconsin, for 19 years, working with the substance abuse rehabilitation program, the chronic pain management program, and the traditional adult mental health patients, including "dual diagnosis" patients. He has served with the La Crosse (Wisconsin) County Drug Court for several years, and as a professional witness on the topic of substance use disorders for federal and state courts in Kansas, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. Dr. Doweiko has served as an adjunct faculty member for colleges in both Wisconsin and Minnesota, most recently with the Viterbo University counselor education program in La Crosse, Wisconsin.

I am very disappointed in this textbook. It smells very heavily of cigarette smoke, so much so that it makes my hands smell when I touch it and I feel sick after only reading it for a short while.

Great book but poor quality

This is a tremendously great book on chemical dependency, however, the quality of the book and its construction are definitely lacking. I could not believe the flimsiness of the cover after the price that I paid for it. It is a soft cover, and is very thin. After opening it once, it immediately stayed open. There are many typographical errors in it with occasional words missing which makes it annoying to read occasionally. Now that I have that out of the way, as I said, it is a great book on the subject at hand. One of the things that I like about it are that each chapter is very well organized and the chapters are arranged in a logical progression, though one can pick out any chapter and it will stand alone without reading prior chapters with the exception of having to read chapter one. If you ever have a chance to purchase this book in hardback, do it because the softback is just not worth the money paid for it. I do NOT understand why the book is so expensive aside from the fact that textbooks are not printed in the same numbers as bestselling novels, so the price is inflated to pay for the printing. It sure did not spend much time on the editing floor, checking for mistakes! However, and this is a BIG however, if you want to learn about this subject, this is the book to get. Just do yourself a favor, and one for everyone else who must buy it, and write to the publisher to complain about the quality of the binding, cover, and typographical errors.
