About the Author
Susan Weiner was born in Hungary and moved to the United States in 1957, after receiving her Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the Technical University in Hungary. She earned a Master's of Science in Chemistry from New York University, and worked in research at the New York University Medical School, the University of California, Berkeley, and for the Dow Chemical Company. She is the author of more than twenty publications for various professional journals on Sea Water Conversion and currently teaches at West Valley College, where she served for many years as the Chemistry Department chair. Also an instrument rated pilot, Weiner enjoys flying and spending time with her twin granddaughters.

Awesome Deal!!

Thanks Soo much Amazon Warehouse Deals for a Brand New Chem Lab. Workbook, it was way cheaper than my college book store. My workbook was described as Used-Good condition, but i would be happy to tell all other customers that my book was Brand New, no highlighing, underlining, or ware at all! I would definitely order from Amazon Warehouse Deals again!!

the cheapest price

This book is the cheapest out there. If you go to any other website, you will be dissapointed. Amazon is the place where you wan to get the cheapest textbooks. Anything you will need for school is right here on the site and this lab book is one of them. It came in great condition and waiting for my class to end for the buyback.

My second chem class I had to get the updated version which is basically the same thing but much more money and a few more labs. Like the last edition very hard to follow labs. I was always lost. This did not help me with the class at all.

"Prior to the adoption of this book (PHYSICS FOR SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS, 5th edition), the textbook was FUNDAMENTALS OF PHYSICS by Halliday and Resnick. Although Halliday and Resnick's book was the textbook chosen by the Physics Department, many students were observed by the faculty to be studying from Serway's book. The students had acquired old used versions of the Serway book, and they were actively studying out of this book rather than the prescribed textbook. Serway's book became our students' popular choice. The Physics Department, recognizing this, adopted a "give them what they want" attitude, and accordingly Serway's book was made the textbook for the calculus-based undergraduate physics course."

"Some of the general things I look for are the end-of-chapter questions and problems, and the quality of explanations. Feedback from students is also important--past students have given Serway more favorable reviews...another reason we went with Serway this semester."

About the Author
Raymond A. Serway received his doctorate at Illinois Institute of Technology and is Professor Emeritus at James Madison University. In 2011, he was awarded an honorary doctorate degree from his alma mater, Utica College. He received the 1990 Madison Scholar Award at James Madison University, where he taught for 17 years. Dr. Serway began his teaching career at Clarkson University, where he conducted research and taught from 1967 to 1980. He was the recipient of the Distinguished Teaching Award at Clarkson University in 1977 and the Alumni Achievement Award from Utica College in 1985. As Guest Scientist at the IBM Research Laboratory in Zurich, Switzerland, he worked with K. Alex Müller, 1987 Nobel Prize recipient. Dr. Serway also was a visiting scientist at Argonne National Laboratory, where he collaborated with his mentor and friend, the late Sam Marshall. In addition to PHYSICS FOR SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS, Dr. Serway is the coauthor of PRINCIPLES OF PHYSICS, Fifth Edition; COLLEGE PHYSICS, Ninth Edition; ESSENTIALS OF COLLEGE PHYSICS; MODERN PHYSICS, Third Edition; and the high school textbook PHYSICS, published by Holt McDougal. In addition, Dr. Serway has published more than 40 research papers in the field of condensed matter physics and has given more than 60 presentations at professional meetings. Dr. Serway and his wife Elizabeth enjoy traveling, playing golf, fishing, gardening, singing in the church choir, and especially spending quality time with their four children, nine grandchildren, and a recent great-grandson.

John W. Jewett, Jr., earned his undergraduate degree in physics at Drexel University and his doctorate at Ohio State University, specializing in optical and magnetic properties of condensed matter. Dr. Jewett began his academic career at Richard Stockton College of New Jersey, where he taught from 1974 to 1984. He is currently Emeritus Professor of Physics at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. Through his teaching career, Dr. Jewett has been active in promoting science education. In addition to receiving four National Science Foundation grants, he helped found and direct the Southern California Area Modern Physics Institute (SCAMPI) and Science IMPACT (Institute for Modern Pedagogy and Creative Teaching). Dr. Jewett's honors include the Stockton Merit Award at Richard Stockton College in 1980, selection as Outstanding Professor at California State Polytechnic University for 1991-1992, and the Excellence in Undergraduate Physics Teaching Award from the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) in 1998. In 2010, he received an Alumni Lifetime Achievement Award from Drexel University in recognition of his contributions in physics education. He has given over 100 presentations both domestically and abroad, including multiple presentations at national meetings of the AAPT. Dr. Jewett is the author of THE WORLD OF PHYSICS: MYSTERIES, MAGIC, AND MYTH, which provides many connections between physics and everyday experiences. In addition to his work on PHYSICS FOR SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS, he is the coauthor for PRINCIPLES OF PHYSICS, Fifth Edition, as well as GLOBAL ISSUES, a four-volume set of instruction manuals in integrated science for high school. Dr. Jewett enjoys playing keyboard with his all-physicist band, traveling, and collecting antique quack medical devices that can be used as demonstration apparatus in physics lectures. AVOID that verbose chaotic mess

I am an instructor at a community college and have been unfortunate to have to use this text to teach "engineering physics" two semesters in a row. The text was selected by the physics department, probably based on its pretty pictures and reputation. If it depended on me, it would hit the trash bin faster than the speed of light!

I have never seen such a verbose chaotic mess of a textbook before. The language used is often inflated/convoluted and the conceptual development is not in a logical order at all, which severely impedes student learning. The ultimate logical fiasco are the Energy/Work chapters. There, you can read nonsenses such as "the work-kinetic energy theorem is of limited application, only to systems in which the only change in the system is in its speed", whatever that means. The reason it is "not always applicable" is that the authors fail to include the work of internal forces which can change the kinetic energy of a sytem, with zero work of external forces. Later, the neglected work of internal forces is used to "motivate" potential energy. At the end, the text does not derive the conservation of mechanical energy from Newton's Laws, as it should, but motivates it with semi-heuristic arguments. This is a prime example how clear-cut logic is turned into a complete mess in this textbook.

It's not enough the text doesn't have logical ordering but the onlne class slides often have a completely different order. Clearly they were written at once without much thought: too much text with no ability to separate important from unimportant, too many "rules to memorize", with weak logical structure and derivation. When I want to do a class presentation in a logical order, I have to do a "Brownian motion" through the slides. The online videos cannot be enlarged so can't be used in a classroom. In effect, I have to spend significant amount of time to write my own lectures to reorganize the logical mess of the textbook. The textbook is working AGAINST the instructor and the students, instead of supporting them!

In the spirit of the textbook, the end of the chapter problems are chaotic. I have to spend SEVERAL afternoons reading ALL 100 after-chapter problems to literally hunt for appropriate ones for homework and order them logically. Often, I find only 1-2 problems of a given type and very few conceptual-building problems solvable in 1-2 lines. I like the online Active Examples but often the follow up Master It section asks a question of completely different type so I have to go over them really carefully before assigning for homework. I also liked the Master It online tutorials but often the guided solution they present is discordant with the textbook so you have to be careful with those too. Due to lack of appropriate problems, I often had to give the same problem for homework, quiz, and exam or use problems from other textbooks. The online "test-bank" that comes with WebAssign contains low quality images (circa 1980's) and multiple-choice questions often discordant with the types found in the textbook. For the online quizzes and exams, I frequently have to re-program/modify questions or program my own on WebAssign. All that takes HUGE amount of time!

This textbook is a HUGE waste of time and effort for both instructors and students. Much better texts with clear logical organization are Randall Knight's and Jearl Walker's (known as Halliday/Resnick/Walker). Knight's textbook takes great care to build concepts visually and in detail, while Walker's textbook is more succinct.

This book is really good at explaining the concepts in physics while deriving all the equations in a comprehensible way. The previous book that I have read is University Physics 13th Edition by Young and Freedman, it was good but there are times when the explanations and derivations are a bit unsatisfactory because it lacks detail, that is why I tried to search for other books to explain and derive things clearly. Since then, I found this book and was really satisfied by the approach and teaching style.

The most important criteria were: 1) included all the necessary topics, 2) well organized and readable by students, 3) clear and careful explanations of topics covered, and 4) a good selection of problems. It has met our expectations because it did, if [sic] fact, meet up to all of our needs."

"The examples in this text are well done. Students are very frustrated when too many steps are left out of an example, but these seem to present their reasoning pretty clearly. In Section 4.3 (graphing with phase shifts) the examples are well constructed and worked out. I appreciate how they start by showing lots of detail and eventually, as you progress through the section, the information is boiled that [sic] down to the essential data -- which is what we want students to be able to do.... The greatest strengths in this text are its coverage of graphing, the right triangle approach to the development of the trig functions, and the organization of the examples (with line by line explanations of the step being performed...It really helps students follow the process if there is 'narration' to what is going on."

About the Author
Charles P. "Pat" McKeague earned his B.A. in Mathematics from California State University, Northridge, and his M.S. in Mathematics from Brigham Young University. A well-known author and respected educator, he is a full-time writer and a part-time instructor at Cuesta College. He has published twelve textbooks in mathematics covering a range of topics from basic mathematics to trigonometry. An active member of the mathematics community, Professor McKeague is a popular speaker at regional conferences, including the California Mathematics Council for Community Colleges, the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the Texas Mathematics Association of Two-Year Colleges, the New Mexico Mathematics Association of Two-Year Colleges, and the National Association for Developmental Education. He is a member of the American Mathematics Association for Two-Year Colleges, the Mathematics Association of America, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and the California Mathematics Council for Community Colleges.

Mark D. Turner earned his B.A. in Mathematics from California State University, Fullerton. Professor Turner worked in the aerospace industry for two years with the Systems Modeling and Analysis group at The Aerospace Corporation before completing his graduate work at California Polytechnic State University, where he earned his M.S. in Mathematics and Secondary Teaching Credential. Turner is a full-time instructor at Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo, California. He has been a leading influence in the use of graphing calculator and multimedia technology in the classroom, as well as a leading innovator in instructional website design at his institution. Mark has also created educational materials through his own company, Turner Educational Publishing, including a series of Web-based tutorials on the use of the TI-83 graphing calculator. He is a member of the American Mathematics Association for Two-Year Colleges and the California Mathematics Council for Community Colleges, and is a frequent speaker at annual conferences. Professor Turner has received the CMC3 Award for Teaching Excellence.

learn trig without a teacher

This book is great. It is well organized, but best of all, it comes with a CD-Rom that ROCKS!! The actual author, Chuck McKeague, teaches each concept on a markerboard, then you can practice as much as you want with different problems every time. Plus, if you just can't get it, the CD will guide you step-by-step through every problem if you want. If your teacher requires another book for Trig. you can still benefit from this one's excellent CD-Rom.

It explains things well enough that I had a basic understanding of the material before going to my professor's lectures. It made it really easy to find the topics in the book to help me solve problems too.

I got a great deal on this book, but there are parts of the book that leave me to figure out the steps on my own. This is probably a good thing for me...but also frustrating.

This book is challenging but worth the effort

I used this book for a class online. When I first started using it, I thought it was too difficult for me. Now its 7 years later, and I'm still exploring many of the gems inside the book: Partial fractions, e, pi, and lots, and lots of super problems that you don't find in "weak" "easy" books that don't prepare you for grad school math and science. Cohen did a great job of showing me how and why certain algebra explorations are still being used, and how they are related to each other. I am now studying quantum mechanics, cosmology, String Theory, etcetera, and would not have made it without Cohen's tough but interesting book.

Paid next to nothing for this book v paying an arm and a leg! It had a few wear and tear marks. however I feel like I still came up on top givenmy school was selling it for well over $100.00.

Esp. since they stopped using it the next semester! I may sell it back! (:

About the Author
Jim Perry is Campus Executive Officer and Dean Emeritus at the University of Wisconsin, Fox Valley. Prior to his retirement in 2011, he also was Professor of Biological Sciences. Dr. Perry began his university education at Fox Valley's sister campus, U.W. Marathon County in Wausau, WI. He received his B.S. (Zoology and Secondary Education), M.S. (Botany and Zoology), and Ph.D. (Botany and Plant Pathology) from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. His Ph.D. thesis was an ultrastructural study of the infection process and disease progression of a major fungal disease of potatoes. From 1983 to 1993, he was a faculty member at Frostburg State University. Dr. Perry and his spouse Joy reside in rural Winnebago County, WI, and spend as much time as possible at their cabin in far northern Wisconsin, seven miles south of Lake Superior. He is an avid outdoors person, vintage car owner, and owns, wrenches, and drives a 1962 Volvo vintage road race car on some of the nation's finest road race circuits.

David Morton emigrated to the United States from London, England, in his sophomore year of high school. Dr. Morton earned a B.S. degree cum laude from the State University of New York at New Paltz and his Ph.D. from Cornell University. His thesis involved iron metabolism in vampire bats, and he continued his general interest in the physiology and ecology of bats throughout his career. Before retiring in 2009, he held positions at Wright State University and Frostburg State University. He chaired FSU's biology department for 9 years. He continues to reside in the city of Frostburg, Maryland, with Beverly, his wife of 46 years. They have one son and four granddaughters.

Joy Perry is Senior Lecturer of Biological Sciences at the University of Wisconsin, Fox Valley, Menasha, WI. Ms. Perry earned a B.S. in General Biology from Purdue University and an M.S. in Plant Pathology, with emphasis on Integrated Pest Management, from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. She serves on the board of the international professional society, the Association for Biology Laboratory Education (ABLE). An avid gardener, she is active in local and statewide groups promoting community and school gardens, as well as expanded opportunities for producers and consumers of local food.

About the Author
Jessica Utts is Professor of Statistics at the University of California at Irvine. She received her B.A. in math and psychology at SUNY Binghamton, and her M.A. and Ph.D. in statistics at Penn State University. Aside from MIND ON STATISTICS, she is the author of SEEING THROUGH STATISTICS and the co-author with Robert Heckard of STATISTICAL IDEAS AND METHODS both published by Cengage Learning. Jessica has been active in the Statistics Education community at the high school and college level. She served as a member and then chaired the Advanced Placement Statistics Development Committee for six years, and was a member of the American Statistical Association task force that produced the GAISE (Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Statistics Education) recommendations for Elementary Statistics courses. She is the recipient of the Academic Senate Distinguished Teaching Award and the Magnar Ronning Award for Teaching Excellence, both at the University of California at Davis. She is also a fellow of the American Statistical Association, the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Beyond statistics education, Jessica's major contributions have been in applying statistics to a variety of disciplines, most notably to parapsychology, the laboratory study of psychic phenomena. She has appeared on numerous television shows, including LARRY KING LIVE, ABCNIGHTLINE, CNN MORNING NEWS, and 20/20, and most recently appears in a documentary included on the DVD with the movie SUSPECT ZERO.

good book from an author who takes teaching very seriously

As a Professor of Statistics at UC Davis Jessica Utts has been an accomplished researcher but what sets her apart from other academic statisticians is her drive to find ways to teach statistics to the masses. She has been very active in the Statistical Education section of the ASA and has been involved as an officer and committee volunteer for the ASA for very many years now. I went to a very nice presentation she gave at the JSM in Denver this year. She write well and is an excellent lecturer as well.

This book emphasizes statistical literacy and the best way to get these cocepts across to non-statisticians in an introductory course is through examples and anecdotes. This she does as well as Freedman et al in their very popular introductory statistics book.

Too much text!

I know it's a text book, but there are seriously too many words in this book. It does not present the information in a manageable way. One must laborously read through boring paragraph after another to understand simple concepts. Examples are also spread out throughout the chapter - one must keep back-tracking to follow along.

About the Author
Daniel P. Maki is the Chair of the Department of Mathematics at Indiana University. His research interests include the study of algorithms related to speech recognition by computer, including hidden Markov models, neural networks, and traditional signal processing. He is on the Board of Governors for the MAA and on the MAA Committee on the Undergraduate Program in Mathematics.

Maynard Thompson has research interests in the applications of mathematics to problems arising in biology and medicine. He served as Chairman of the CUPM Committee on Applied Mathematics, on the SIAM Education Committee, on the MCM Advisory Board, and as a Visiting Lecturer for the MAA and SIAM. He has written research and expository articles and lectured in workshops and conferences on mathematical modeling in the social and life sciences.

Mathematical Modeling Class

We used this book for Mathematical Modeling class. This book covers a wide range of solving various types of mathematical modeling problems such as axiom sets, genetics, stratified population, Markov Chain, Linear programming and so on. Texts are well written and problems are challenging. I love the appendix section. We competed in MCM competition this year and I saw the reference of that competition on the back cover of this book.

Perfect condition for class. Hard to understand at times and leaves a lot of unanswered questions. For example it will gives new theorem but tell you to prove it in the exercises.

The parts created (in Part One of the book) are used to create assemblies (Part Two) and generate drawings (Part Three). Students are able to work with actual completed parts, assemblies, and drawings in a short-lesson format, instead of building large complex projects where basic commands may be overshadowed and lost in a complicated process. Rather than attempting to cover all of Pro/E Wildfire's features, this book provides an introduction to the software, makes one reasonably proficient in its use, and establishes a firm basis for exploring and growing with the program beyond the classroom.

About the Author
Louis Gary Lamit is the former head of the drafting department and CAD facility manager at De Anza College in Cupertino California. Mr. Lamit has worked as a drafter, designer, numerical control (NC) programmer, technical illustrator, and engineer in the automotive, aircraft, and piping industries. A majority of his work experience is in the area of mechanical and piping design. He started as a drafter in Detroit (as a job shopper) in the automobile industry, doing tooling, dies, jigs and fixture layout, and detailing at Koltenbar Engineering, Tool Engineering, Time Engineering, and Premier Engineering for Chrysler, Ford, AMC, and Fisher Body. Mr. Lamit has worked at Remington Arms and Pratt and Whitney Aircraft as a designer, and at Boeing Aircraft and Kollmorgan Optics as an NC programmer and aircraft engineer. Mr. Lamit also owns and operates his own consulting firm, and has been involved with advertising and patent illustrating.

Very Bad buy, software is sheer torture

I bought this book with the intent of studying and learning. But..it wouldn't activate. After some help from PTC and resetting the URL to the right version it loaded, including the license activation. OOPS! the CDs are outdated, program shuts down. (No help whatsoever from PTC with this issue, they're clueless). Getting hold of the author, 2 new CDs are sent out immediately (But I did pay for the postage). The CDs are loaded, ProEngineer starts up, but can't download ANY of the files that the books uses for lessons because the new student version is inhibited. While the book gives good instructions, the rest is just pure incompetence. This course will teach you to really hate ProE before you even start to learn it, and frankly compared to Solidworks and Inventor Version 8, this is some seriously outdated software with weird file structures that tells me I'm running a mad mix of old software and patches to make it look "new". Just awful. I might get it working but I've been struggling with it for some 10 days now. I feel like I've been ripped off and if I don't get it working soon I want my money back from Amazon.com

Best Pro Engineer Book Available

While fairly good at describing how to use the tools available in Pro-E, the Definitions and explanations of conceptual use of these tools is lacking. I do not recommend this book for people who are trying to learn Pro Engineer on their own. Use of this book is best in an setting where an experienced user or instructor are available for assistance.

For 100$ this book does not stand up to a 50$ book for learning another problem like Alias Maya. But certainly because of a lack of competition, this book seems to be the best choice.

Positive Aspects:

1)After completing this book you should have a strong grasp of the fundamental of Pro Engineer and should be able to use most of its processes and tools.

including:

-Extrusions

-Revolving Protrusions

-Cuting (negative Protrusions)

-Revolving Cuts

-Chamfering

-Threading.

-Setup and Environmental settings

-Dimensional Values

-The Configuration File system

-Datum planes

-Layers

-Parent/Child Hierachy system

-Sketching and 3d navigation

-Point manipulation

-Unit control

-Shell (Molding) Tool

-Sweeps and Trajectories

-Exploded views and Sub assembly Drawings

-Drawing layouts, Title Blocks, Print views, and Part Lists

2) Good layout, and clear instructions. Pictures are complete, and do a good job of illustrating steps. Step by step instructions allow for quick results in making models and learning the software when understood.

3) After completion of the book, most fundamental products can be completed in Pro-E. While it is not a complete explanation of all of its features, the topics covered more that give a solid foundation for creating most 3d objects and using models to communicate in the real world.

Negative Aspects:

1) Definitions and Explainations

The books is horrible at explaining why tool and process are important of necessary, or defining what they are. People unfamiliar with CAD lingo, will struggle with this books definitions.

Take this Quote explaining Datums and Layers: "Datums and layers are two of the most useful mechanisms for creating and organizing your design (Fig. 5.1). Features such as datum planes and datum axes are essential for the creation of all parts, assemblies, and drawings using Pro/E. Layers are an essential tool for grouping items and performing operations on them, such as selecting, displaying or blanking, plotting, and suppressing. Any number of layers can be created. User Defined names are available, so layer names can be easily recognized. Most companies have a layering scheme that serves as a default standard so that all projects follow the same naming conventions and objects/items are easily located by anyone with access. Layer information, such as display status, is stored with each individual part, assembly, or drawing."

This explanation is the only one located in the book explaining Datums and layers in the book, but no where does it define what a datum or layers is. It doesn't mention how datum planes are imaginary references from which measurements are made. Instead seems to say, that we should use them because everyone else does. This sort fluffy explanation just for the sake of having words, is riddles throughout the book. I found myself using online dictionaries such as wikipedia for definitions.

2)Incomplete instructions.

Following the instructions exactly won't necessarily construct a Lessons model. On lesson 2 I spent nearly 8 hours trying to figure out how to use the Create Defining Dimention tool. Only when I was able to grab a colleague, did I figure out that I needed to use the middle mouse button to release the dimension. A simple mistake which is exacerbated by the lack of description of how to use the tool in the book.

Many instructions in this book leave out very simple steps like a middle mouse button click, or the use of a tool or button that can create hours of problem solving and experimentation.

3) No explanation of Errors. Or problem Solving help.

Often, out-of-order commands in Pro-E will result in errors which are very difficult to problem-solve. Because of some of the incomplete instructions in this book, it can be very difficult to figure out what when wrong or how to fix it. It seems that if simple explanations on how Pro-E works, or how it gathers information were explained, that these mistakes could be avoided by learning users. Or even if warnings of some common errors that occur and how to fix them would be extremely helpful.

Conclusion:

Most other modeling and CAD programs like Alias MAYA, Ashlar-Vellum, and Solid works use different systems or have better documentation. A book guiding users through Pro-E really should be more expansive than what is found in Louis Lamit's book. A new comprehensive revision is seriously needed before a book like this can be used to learn Pro Engineer independently. However, for an assisted guide, this book is currently the best among a large crowd of bad books on Pro-E instruction.

When looking to learn Pro-E be ready to purchase more instruction, or spend time searching the Internet for help than this book can provide.

Most comprehensive Pro/E Wildfire book; worth every penny!

Concise and well presented with a strong approach on appropriate parametric modeling techniques that are not usually covered in other books. This is with out a doubt the best-written introduction book on Pro/E I have ever seen. It is also quite good as an upgrade book. Lamits propensity for writing textbooks throughout the years truly comes out in this new version. I could not ask for a better manual to instruct my students with. Not only does it cover parametric modeling with a step-by-step approach were one learned technique builds on another, but it also covers assembles and detailing as well. It comprehensively covers the new WildFire interface and includes a free CD with a 60 to 120 day Tryout Edition that contains Pro/ENGINEER and Pro/MECHANICA. What a deal...If you find a better book I will eat this one!
