About the Author
Wayne L. Winston is Professor Emeritus of Decision Sciences at the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University and is now a Professor of Decision and Information Sciences at the Bauer College at the University of Houston. He has won more than 45 teaching awards, including the school-wide MBA award six times. His current interest is in showing how spreadsheet models can be used to solve business problems in all disciplines, particularly in finance, sports, and marketing. In addition to publishing more than 20 articles in leading journals, Dr. Winston has written such successful textbooks as OPERATIONS RESEARCH: APPLICATIONS AND ALGORITHMS, MATHEMATICAL PROGRAMMING: APPLICATIONS AND ALGORITHMS, SIMULATION MODELING WITH @RISK, DATA ANALYSIS FOR MANAGERS, SPREADSHEET MODELING AND APPLICATIONS, MATHLETICS, DATA ANALYSIS AND BUSINESS MODELING WITH EXCEL 2013, MARKETING ANALYTICS, and FINANCIAL MODELS USING SIMULATION AND OPTIMIZATION. He received his B.S. degree in mathematics from MIT and his Ph.D. in operations research from Yale.

Is there an ideal text that non-statisticians will love?

Teaching statistics is a tough business because it is quantitative, rigourous, and often abstract. Most importantly teaching statistics is tough because the majority of students most professors face take statistics because the need to, not because they want to. To make matters worse, they face instructors who not only grasp the theory, but enjoy it, and who are all the while empowered to deliver no more than little snippets of higher level stuff their students can apply.
Rice tries to bridge the gap between theory and application, delivering enough theory that the student understands the logical foundation of the applied aspects they may have already discovered in previous courses. In my mind, this is the central theme of Rice's text - avoiding unnecessary and often pedantic details better left to graduate majors in statistics while filling in the background material that often left students of statistics uncertain about the amount of confidence to place in their analyses. Rice's text is not for those who fear rigour and logic. His introductions to new concepts are compact, impersonal, and often followed by terse propositions, definitions and laws that build logically as the text progresses. He includes numerous examples that are similarly terse; however, he never failed my litmus test for logical works, which is a demonstrable linkage between each example and some proposition, law or definition previously introduced.
The text commences with the most basic review of probability, progressing quickly to random variables, distributions, expected values and important derived distributions like the t, F and Chi-square. Students will discover how the tests they applied in the past are related to theory. This theme culminates in the section on Survey Sampling, in which sampling estimators and their assumptions are derived.
Rice has weaknesses that deserve mention. Some of the problems are tough, and Rice's impersonal approach emphasizes concepts over technique. I spent many hours reading and re-reading sections in the text before a useful approach to a problem came to me. Sections on least squares and ANOVA are the least useful; they are too compact to achieve the goal of bridging theory and application. This material is much better covered elsewhere. The decision theory and Baesian inference section suffers similarly, but given how little exposure most stats students get to this material is nevertheless useful.
If you're interested in learning the rigourous application of statistics but not theory, then Rice isn't for you. No matter what, you mustn't be afraid of challenges; Rice is impersonal and compact and won't make any excuses for you. If you want to understand the assumptions and limitations of the applied statistics you've already been practicing, however, I recommend Rice enthusiastically. He won't explain the assumptions, but he will arm you with the knowledge to do it yourself.

This book got very mixed reviews from 1 star to 5. I am in agreement with Froese's review and give it 4 stars. Rice is trying to write a book for statistics students who are not mathematics or statistics majors without shortchanging them on the advanced topics and the theory. This can be difficult and often alienates both the beginners and those interested in advanced methods. I have tried to stay along that fine line with my texts also. So I appreciate the difficulties. As an author of a book on bootstrap methods, I also appreciate the way Rice has integrated that subject into this text.

Don't believe the bad reviews of this book

This book is so far the best mathematical statistics and data analysis textbook I've ever read for an undergraduate intermediate level statistics course. The topics are well chosen and the book is well written. The previous bad reviews of the book at Amazon.com are from people with absolutely no knowledge of statistics and trying to find some short-cut to "prepare for a exam" or whatever. So if you are a serious reader and with intermediate level statistics understanding, go for the book. It is not only good to be used a textbook, but also excellent for reference purpose.

About the Author
Richard L. Scheaffer, Professor Emeritus of Statistics, University of Florida, received his Ph.D. in statistics from Florida State University. Accompanying a career of teaching, research and administration, Dr. Scheaffer has led efforts on the improvement of statistics education throughout the school and college curriculum. Co-author of five textbooks, he was one of the developers of the Quantitative Literacy Project that formed the basis of the data analysis strand in the curriculum standards of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. He also led the task force that developed the AP Statistics Program, for which he served as Chief Faculty Consultant. Dr. Scheaffer is a Fellow and past president of the American Statistical Association, a past chair of the Conference Board of the Mathematical Sciences, and an advisor on numerous statistics education projects.

About the Author
Dr. Barry R. Cournoyer has been a social work practitioner for more than 40 years and a university teacher for more than 35 years. He received his M.S.S.W. degree from the University of Tennessee and the D.S.W. degree from the University of Utah. He is Emeritus Professor with the Indiana University School of Social Work, where he taught for 32 years. A former Associate Dean with the School, he remains interested in student learning assessment and quality improvement activities in social work education. In addition to this eighth edition of THE SOCIAL WORK SKILLS WORKBOOK, he co-authored THE SOCIAL WORK PORTFOLIO and the Seventh Edition of SOCIAL WORK PROCESSES -- all published by Brooks/Cole-Cengage. I had to buy this book for a senior social welfare class and so far I am unimpressed with this book. If you are looking for a review of material this is the right book for you. However if you are interested in teaching older students than I would keep looking at other texts. I have had another text book from the same author and I was displeased with the last text as well. I would not recommend this test nor the other.

The book has concise information in how to create a portfolio for the Social Work program, also bring specific guidelines without deviating from the main purpose which is to help a student (future social worker to become more organized on tasks and filing information properly).
I did like that it was easy to use and follow. what I did not like was that has only a paper version which for the modern world, I believe the book should come with a link to a portfolio web site. The university I am right now at, had purchase the rights for a e-portfolio in order to apply this information in a more modern society based on internet expansions.
I would recommend the book to S W teacher to use with students, to SW students and to any senior student in a sociology or social science.

About the Author
Following graduation from Michigan State University in 1966, Dr. Lauralee Sherwood joined the faculty at West Virginia University, where she is currently a Professor in the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, School of Medicine. For the past 40 years, Professor Sherwood has taught an average of over 400 students each year in physiology courses for pharmacy, medical technology, physical therapy, occupational therapy, nursing, medical, dental, dental hygiene, nutrition, exercise physiology, and athletic training majors. She has authored three physiology textbooks: HUMAN PHYSIOLOGY: FROM CELLS TO SYSTEMS, FUNDAMENTALS OF HUMAN PHYSIOLOGY, and ANIMAL PHYSIOLOGY: FROM GENES TO ORGANISMS, all published by Cengage Learning/Brooks/Cole. Dr. Sherwood has received numerous teaching awards, including an Amoco Foundation Outstanding Teacher Award, a Golden Key National Honor Society Outstanding Faculty Award, two listings in Who's Who Among America's Teachers, and the Dean's Award of Excellence in Education.

Got the info and not too dry

It is a text book so clearly not something I would have expected myself to sit down and read for pleasure. However I have discovered I love all the complex, but valuable info and it is relatively easy to understand. In comparison to other text books I have read this is and A+. Also was delivered quickly and the book was perfect.

Suitable Substitute for 8 Ed.

I bought this textbook for a college physiology course. I’ve kept up with the class so far, and can’t seem to see any differences except for table/figure placement on the pages. The newer 8th edition was release only 3 years later, so I know I’m not missing out on vital information.

I give it 3 stars because there are some sections that lack information (e.g. brain stem section of CNS – no detail given on midbrain/pons/medulla, simply skims over vital information), or, when enough detail is provided, it is written in such a way that it only confuses you more as you read (e.g. how photoreceptors transduce light into action potentials).

Still, it’s rudimentary enough to grasp the concept—and I have no anatomy background. This textbook is great only if your instructor is requesting the 8th edition, or you want an AP teen in high school to get ahead.

About the Author
Sharon Lohr (Ph.D. in statistics, University of Wisconsin-Madison) is the Thompson Industries Dean's Distinguished Professor of Statistics at Arizona State University, where she has taught since 1990. Dr. Lohr's research focuses on survey sampling, design of experiments, and applications of statistics to social sciences and education. In 2003 she received the inaugural Gertrude M. Cox Award from the Washington Statistical Society and in 2009 was selected to present the Morris Hansen Lecture.

nice introduction to survey sampling

For me the classic book on survey sampling is Cochran's. The second edition of Cochran was published in 1977 and there have been many advances since including the use of superpopulation models. Lohr provides the basic concepts first followed with many exercises at the end of the chapters. It is designed for a first course which could be taken by statistics majors or undergraduates in fields that use survey sampling such as business, sociology, psychology or biology. Many real surveys are presented and the standard topics (e.g. stratified and cluster sampling) are covered. Issues of nonresponse are also discussed. Chapter 12 covers topics not commonly seen in survey sampling texts including two-phase sampling and capture-recapture analysis. Warner's method of randomized response to deal with sensitive questionnaires is also covered in Chapter 12. It is also unusual in that it provides a great deal of coverage of resampling methods to estimate variance components including the bootstrap, jackknife and balanced repeated replicates. It also deals with regression and logistic regression in problems involving complex survey data. Missing data issues are also discussed as are imputation methods The book contains a many references to the literature and also includes a CD ROM with some data sets and a software program called SURVEY.

excellent sampling textbook

this is an excellent book on sampling. it accommadates all reader levels (undergrad, graduate, practioner and theorist). i can't comment too much about the theoretical aspects of the book because that is not my focus. but for those who want to learn about sampling and use it for their jobs or school projects, i cannot think of a better text. i find myself referring to the text constantly. her examples are relatively clear and easy to follow, in my opinion. she covers cluster sampling and complex surveys (variance calculations) in depth and with great clarity.

A well-written guide to sampling design and analysis.

Sharon Lohr does a great job of covering the subject of sampling, which seems to be overlooked in most curricula even though the need for it is ubiquitous across disciplines. This text is appropriate at an intermediate level such as third or fourth year undergraduate or first-year graduate study. The math notation appears to be an attempt to bridge between the notation used at the introductory level and that which appears in graduate texts such as Greene. I found it relatively easy to follow, but it might not be so easy for someone who is seeing it for the first time. The best feature of the book is its comprehensive coverage of the subject. If you have a question about sampling, there is likely a concise and understandable answer available in this text.

About the Author
Dennis G. Zill is professor of mathematics at Loyola Marymount University. His interests are in applied mathematics, special functions, and integral transforms. Dr. Zill received his Ph.D. in applied mathematics and his M.S. from Iowa State University in 1967 and 1964, respectively. He received his B.A. from St. Mary's in Winona, Minnesota, in 1962. Dr. Zill also is former chair of the Mathematics Department at Loyola Marymount University. He is the author or co-author of 13 mathematics texts.

A good text on ordinary differential equations with good examples

This particular textbook concerns ordinary differential equations. There are plenty of examples, and they are worked in steps that should make the solution strategy clear to any student with at least two previous semesters of calculus. One of the unusual features of the book are essays written by mathematicians present at the end of chapters 3, 4, 5, and 9. Each essay concerns applications of concepts learned in the previous chapter. The book is well illustrated, and motivations for study are included by making the examples solve practical problems such as the charge on a capacitor, solving orthogonal trajectories of the family of a rectangular hyperbola, or even determining the half-life of a radioactive substance. This makes it ideal for engineering students. There are numerous exercises at the end of each chapter and the solutions to odd numbered problems can be found in the back of the book. Best Book Out There For ODEs

This is the best book I've come across for ordinary differential equations, and I've gone through many of them as a mathematics major! Not only did this book teach me the entire subject matter, I continue to go back to it years later whenever I need to review a technique. The explanations are lucid and clear, and the examples provided are very helpful. Most importantly, when presenting a technique, the authors break it down into all possible cases, so that you are ready to handle any type of problem assigned for hw or tests. I highly recommend this book!

Horrid Text

The text does not cover materials it should, and spends time on issues that do not relate to the area of learning.
The last two chapters are very unorganized and unclear to most students.
Never have I taught a class with so many student complaints about a text.
I strongly suggest that you look elsewhere for a learning text.

Excellent

While this may be an academic book I have used it, and others by DA Lieberman, to support my role in teaching challenging young people as well as in my psychology course studies.

I don't read all my academic books cover to cover but, I've actually enjoyed reading this and it has been fascinating. It has helped me at times when I have wondered why individuals are behaving in certain ways and has given me ideas for discussion points to help me find solutions, this is on top of it being an excellent resource for essays and assignments.

I'd say buy it, has really helped me, not just in my studies.
