About the Author
Herbert Goldenberg was Professor Emeritus of Psychology at California State University, Los Angeles, where he developed and taught classes in family therapy. Together with Irene Goldenberg he was awarded the 2007 American Family Therapy Academy lifetime achievement award for family therapy. He also held membership in the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, the American Family Therapy Academy, and the Family Therapy division of the American Psychological Association. He was also elected fellow in that APA division. The Goldenbergs co-authored another book published by Brooks/Cole, COUNSELING TODAY'S FAMILIES, Fourth Edition.
Irene Goldenberg is Professor Emeritus of Psychology in the Department of Psychiatry at the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute. She served as Associate Chairperson of that department and as Director of Psychological Services for many years, and continues to teach marriage and family therapy courses to psychologists, psychiatrists, and social workers there. She currently supervises doctoral students and directs the family therapy program at the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System. Together with Herbert Goldenberg, Dr. Goldenberg was awarded the 2007 American Family Therapy Academy lifetime achievement award for family therapy. She also holds membership in the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, the American Family Therapy Academy, and the Family Therapy division of the American Psychological Association. She has been elected fellow in that APA division. She is co-author of another book published by Brooks/Cole, COUNSELING TODAY'S FAMILIES, Fourth Edition.

Ok intro to family counseling

In all honesty, this book is boring and the writing style is dry. Even though this addition is "revised", it is sorely in need of a complete overhaul. I believe the only revisions must have been statistical, as the material itself seemed really outdated.
It did, however, have a pretty decent section explaining the different theoretical models of family therapy. If it weren't for this in addition to its inclusion of diversity (albeit old and somewhat stereotypical) it would have received two stars from me!

Counseling Today's Families

This is an excellent entry level book for those just beginning to look at family counseling. It gives examples from real life counseling situations which is what I love. The book covers single parent families, alternative family styles and other topics that speak to the families of today. The book is very much written with the child in mind which is exactly the focus I need.

This book is not up to date

I had to have this book for school. The information is not current as it was published in 2002. I would strongly discourage people from using it as a source or using for a couneling program. I found this book offensive at some points.
