"Prior to the adoption of this book (PHYSICS FOR SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS, 5th edition), the textbook was FUNDAMENTALS OF PHYSICS by Halliday and Resnick. Although Halliday and Resnick's book was the textbook chosen by the Physics Department, many students were observed by the faculty to be studying from Serway's book. The students had acquired old used versions of the Serway book, and they were actively studying out of this book rather than the prescribed textbook. Serway's book became our students' popular choice. The Physics Department, recognizing this, adopted a "give them what they want" attitude, and accordingly Serway's book was made the textbook for the calculus-based undergraduate physics course."

"Some of the general things I look for are the end-of-chapter questions and problems, and the quality of explanations. Feedback from students is also important--past students have given Serway more favorable reviews...another reason we went with Serway this semester."

About the Author
Raymond A. Serway received his doctorate at Illinois Institute of Technology and is Professor Emeritus at James Madison University. In 2011, he was awarded an honorary doctorate degree from his alma mater, Utica College. He received the 1990 Madison Scholar Award at James Madison University, where he taught for 17 years. Dr. Serway began his teaching career at Clarkson University, where he conducted research and taught from 1967 to 1980. He was the recipient of the Distinguished Teaching Award at Clarkson University in 1977 and the Alumni Achievement Award from Utica College in 1985. As Guest Scientist at the IBM Research Laboratory in Zurich, Switzerland, he worked with K. Alex Müller, 1987 Nobel Prize recipient. Dr. Serway also was a visiting scientist at Argonne National Laboratory, where he collaborated with his mentor and friend, the late Sam Marshall. In addition to PHYSICS FOR SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS, Dr. Serway is the coauthor of PRINCIPLES OF PHYSICS, Fifth Edition; COLLEGE PHYSICS, Ninth Edition; ESSENTIALS OF COLLEGE PHYSICS; MODERN PHYSICS, Third Edition; and the high school textbook PHYSICS, published by Holt McDougal. In addition, Dr. Serway has published more than 40 research papers in the field of condensed matter physics and has given more than 60 presentations at professional meetings. Dr. Serway and his wife Elizabeth enjoy traveling, playing golf, fishing, gardening, singing in the church choir, and especially spending quality time with their four children, nine grandchildren, and a recent great-grandson.

John W. Jewett, Jr., earned his undergraduate degree in physics at Drexel University and his doctorate at Ohio State University, specializing in optical and magnetic properties of condensed matter. Dr. Jewett began his academic career at Richard Stockton College of New Jersey, where he taught from 1974 to 1984. He is currently Emeritus Professor of Physics at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. Through his teaching career, Dr. Jewett has been active in promoting science education. In addition to receiving four National Science Foundation grants, he helped found and direct the Southern California Area Modern Physics Institute (SCAMPI) and Science IMPACT (Institute for Modern Pedagogy and Creative Teaching). Dr. Jewett's honors include the Stockton Merit Award at Richard Stockton College in 1980, selection as Outstanding Professor at California State Polytechnic University for 1991-1992, and the Excellence in Undergraduate Physics Teaching Award from the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) in 1998. In 2010, he received an Alumni Lifetime Achievement Award from Drexel University in recognition of his contributions in physics education. He has given over 100 presentations both domestically and abroad, including multiple presentations at national meetings of the AAPT. Dr. Jewett is the author of THE WORLD OF PHYSICS: MYSTERIES, MAGIC, AND MYTH, which provides many connections between physics and everyday experiences. In addition to his work on PHYSICS FOR SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS, he is the coauthor for PRINCIPLES OF PHYSICS, Fifth Edition, as well as GLOBAL ISSUES, a four-volume set of instruction manuals in integrated science for high school. Dr. Jewett enjoys playing keyboard with his all-physicist band, traveling, and collecting antique quack medical devices that can be used as demonstration apparatus in physics lectures. Most importantly, he relishes spending time with his wife Lisa and their children and grandchildren.

AVOID that verbose chaotic mess

I am an instructor at a community college and have been unfortunate to have to use this text to teach "engineering physics" two semesters in a row. The text was selected by the physics department, probably based on its pretty pictures and reputation. If it depended on me, it would hit the trash bin faster than the speed of light!

I have never seen such a verbose chaotic mess of a textbook before. The language used is often inflated/convoluted and the conceptual development is not in a logical order at all, which severely impedes student learning. The ultimate logical fiasco are the Energy/Work chapters. There, you can read nonsenses such as "the work-kinetic energy theorem is of limited application, only to systems in which the only change in the system is in its speed", whatever that means. The reason it is "not always applicable" is that the authors fail to include the work of internal forces which can change the kinetic energy of a sytem, with zero work of external forces. Later, the neglected work of internal forces is used to "motivate" potential energy. At the end, the text does not derive the conservation of mechanical energy from Newton's Laws, as it should, but motivates it with semi-heuristic arguments. This is a prime example how clear-cut logic is turned into a complete mess in this textbook.

It's not enough the text doesn't have logical ordering but the onlne class slides often have a completely different order. Clearly they were written at once without much thought: too much text with no ability to separate important from unimportant, too many "rules to memorize", with weak logical structure and derivation. When I want to do a class presentation in a logical order, I have to do a "Brownian motion" through the slides. The online videos cannot be enlarged so can't be used in a classroom. In effect, I have to spend significant amount of time to write my own lectures to reorganize the logical mess of the textbook. The textbook is working AGAINST the instructor and the students, instead of supporting them!

In the spirit of the textbook, the end of the chapter problems are chaotic. I have to spend SEVERAL afternoons reading ALL 100 after-chapter problems to literally hunt for appropriate ones for homework and order them logically. Often, I find only 1-2 problems of a given type and very few conceptual-building problems solvable in 1-2 lines. I like the online Active Examples but often the follow up Master It section asks a question of completely different type so I have to go over them really carefully before assigning for homework. I also liked the Master It online tutorials but often the guided solution they present is discordant with the textbook so you have to be careful with those too. Due to lack of appropriate problems, I often had to give the same problem for homework, quiz, and exam or use problems from other textbooks. The online "test-bank" that comes with WebAssign contains low quality images (circa 1980's) and multiple-choice questions often discordant with the types found in the textbook. For the online quizzes and exams, I frequently have to re-program/modify questions or program my own on WebAssign. All that takes HUGE amount of time!

This textbook is a HUGE waste of time and effort for both instructors and students. Much better texts with clear logical organization are Randall Knight's and Jearl Walker's (known as Halliday/Resnick/Walker). Knight's textbook takes great care to build concepts visually and in detail, while Walker's textbook is more succinct.

After I rented a used copy I discovered that the class homework requires access to WebAssign. If you buy the book new it comes with an access code, otherwise you need to spend an additional $75.

This book is really good at explaining the concepts in physics while deriving all ...

This book is really good at explaining the concepts in physics while deriving all the equations in a comprehensible way. The previous book that I have read is University Physics 13th Edition by Young and Freedman, it was good but there are times when the explanations and derivations are a bit unsatisfactory because it lacks detail, that is why I tried to search for other books to explain and derive things clearly. Since then, I found this book and was really satisfied by the approach and teaching style.
