A prime example of how NOT to write a textbook.

I've had to read through many textbooks in my time. And I can state that this is one of the worst I've ever had the displeasure of reading.
Starr and McMillan pack information into dense paragraphs that make the eyes water. Also, they tend to put too many technical terms next to one another, creating a sense of information overload. A better tactic would have been to have spread the terms out a little bit more, even if it meant making the book a bit larger.
The diagrams are serviceable, but nowhere near as detailed or informative as others I've seen.
In the end, I have to come down hard on this book. Professors and school districts, I beg you not to choose HUMAN BIOLOGY for your courses. And students, if your professors or school districts *do* choose this book, you have my sympathies.

Lacks of coincise organization.

This edition went out of print. I hope that the new one will be better organized.The general make-up of the 4th edition presented a variety of flaws. Among others -- the most evident was the lack of a coincise outline. Basically the reader needs to go through the chapters a couple of times. However, only a thorough reading allows to catch the big picture and the essential concepts. Hence, this is one of those books that especially complicates (rather than simplify) the homework of those students that carry on a heavy load of classes.
