About the Author
Jay Devore is Professor Emeritus of Statistics at California Polytechnic State University. He earned his undergraduate degree in Engineering Science from the University of California at Berkeley, spent a year at the University of Sheffield in England, and finished his Ph.D. in statistics at Stanford University. Jay previously taught at the University of Florida and at Oberlin College and has had visiting appointments at Stanford, Harvard, the University of Washington, New York University, and Columbia University. From 1998 to 2006, he served as Chair of the Statistics Department. In addition to this book, Jay has written several widely used engineering statistics texts and a book in applied mathematical statistics. He recently coauthored a text in probability and stochastic processes. He is the recipient of a distinguished teaching award from Cal Poly, is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association , and has served several terms as an Associate Editor of the "Journal of the American Statistical Association." In his spare time, he enjoys reading, cooking and eating good food, tennis, and travel to faraway places. He is especially proud of his wife, Carol, a retired elementary school teacher, his daughter Allison, who has held several high-level positions in nonprofit organizations in Boston and New York City, and his daughter Teresa, an ESL teacher in New York City.

Learn to get those numbers from your calculator to save time in exams and you can have a better grade.

This book should be labeled "A manual for someone who has high school math and suddenly need to do some hypothesis testing". The way this author tries to explain anything is awful. Make me wonder how much brain is needed to teach and publish papers in statistics. That intelligence is definitely not enough to deal with mathematics.
Author fails to mention that many distribution function and their inverse can be accessed from modern TI calculator (such as Ti83 or Ti84). Of course any real work should be done with a computer, be it Excel, Matlab (paid), R (free), or whatever you fancy. They don't let you bring a computer to a test, but they will allow a calculator. If your instructor give you a copy of the tables in the book for your test, he is very mean to you. Learn to get those numbers from your calculator to save time in exams and you can have a better grade.

I like that it is cheap compared to the hard cover ...

I like that it is cheap compared to the hard cover version. However, some of the practice problems after each section are in different order when compared to the hard cover. My teacher used the hard cover version. So, this became inconvenient when she assigned problems for homework. But, every problem that is in the hard cover is in this version. They are even in the same section, just in different order. Example: Number 49 in chapter 3 is number 57 in this version. Other than this, it was a better buy than the hard cover.

Badly Organized, examples pointless and only add to the confusion

One of the worst features of this textbook is organization. Expect some questions to ask you to flip back to a previous question requiring you to flip thru several pages for a single question. Would it have been so difficult to rewrite out a few numbers instead of See Problem #12.
Also question numbering is completely absurd, rather than going from 1-X they for some reason carry the X to the next section example chapter 1-1 would be problems 1-20, chapter 1-2 21-30... etc it only adds to the confusion of this worthless text.
Don't expect to learn anything from the textbook the examples are difficult to understand, and avoids any problems you would expect to see in your lifetime.
One of the best teaching technique is to use real life examples such as calculating the probability and statistics of games of chance. Such as probably of blackjack hands, dice rolling, this textbook manages to avoid everything that has to with things like that.
